F ounded in 2020 by Hank Scott, TB2 Aerospace designs and builds the connection between drones and the load they carry – the docking hardware along with the family of cargo, fuel, water, and medical pods all use the same interface. However, the company’s most famous product is DROPS, a patented docking and capture system that lets an unmanned aircraft or ground vehicle pick up, carry, and drop off a payload on its own.
TB2 primarily works with the U.S. military and allied defense partners, providing the resources to move supplies while reducing risk and avoiding harm. The same technology can also be utilized by a variety of businesses to facilitate last-mile delivery, disaster response, and remote logistics. Founder Hank Scott spent years as a Royal Australian Navy officer and later taught aerospace engineering at the University of Colorado. During his work, he continued to run into the same problem: Every drone and payload was built as a one-off, meaning none of them worked together. Scott founded TB2 Aerospace to remedy this by creating one open standard that any platform can use. “That open approach is what sets us apart. We do not lock a customer into a single drone or a single vendor,” said Sid Arora, Vice President of Operations for TB2. In just six years, TB2 has grown significantly. They’ve adopted DROPS for unmanned boats and ships, expanding their set of customers. During its infancy, TB2 worked with engineering students from University of Colorado Boulder and
Colorado State University. Several of those students now work for the company full time, keeping talent and ideas fresh. The company boasts seven federal research contracts worth more than $5.7 million; they hold five patents; DROPS has grown from an idea to real hardware that’s flown more than 200 times and been shown at major Army, Air Force and Marine Corps exercises; and pods now range up to 1,400 pounds. TB2 has been at their Golden, Colorado, “hardware hub” at St. John Properties’ Corporate Center business community since early summer 2024, which is just minutes from I-70 and the universities. Their flex space means that TB2 can have a workshop, lab, and office space all under one roof. The building’s high ceilings make it easy for loading and moving drone hardware. A five-person team completes the hands-on work – mechanical, electrical and software engineering; 3D printing; assembly; and building and testing their docking systems. The entire TB2 company comprises 13 total team members spread across several states and the United Kingdom. This makes
reliable remote access essential. “The main thing St. John Properties helped us solve was exactly that. Their team helped set up the network and remote access, so the whole company could connect to the Golden shop and keep projects moving. For a company working to federal deadlines, having a property team that helps with that kind of practical problem makes a real difference,” said Arora. “St. John Properties helped us configure the network so every one of our users can securely reach the Golden systems from wherever they are. That turned the suite into the hub of a distributed company, not just a local office.” –Sid Arora, Vice President of Operations, TB2 Aerospace
