A MOTHER’S DAY SHOUTOUT TO MY WIFE, LISA

VIP Referral Patient of the Month!

JACKIE SALVATORE

The best compliment we can receive is to have one of our patients refer a friend or family member to our practice. If you refer someone and we are able to take them as a patient, both you and the person who was referred will be entered to Win a $25 gift card! It’s just our way of saying

When my wife Lisa and I first got together, we didn’t plan to have kids. We were young and ambitious, and we wanted to travel and pursue our careers. We had a great time doing both of those things for the first couple years of our marriage. But then, something changed. We revisited the idea of having children and decided, “If it happens, it happens. If not, then it’s just not in the cards.” As you probably know, it happened! Life surprised us with not one but two amazing kids. When our daughter Brianna was born, Lisa stepped up to the plate and made the baby her whole world. It was clear right away that she would be an amazing mom. Today, both of our lives revolve around our little family. Everything we do is for our kids, and Lisa is the one who makes that possible. She takes care of a thousand small things around the house and even synced the calendars on our smartphones. She uses those calendars to keep tabs on me and the kids, making sure we take care of all of their activities and never miss a home or away game. It’s a lot to keep track of, and she does an incredible job. I’ve always appreciated my wife and her role in our two-person team, but last year I found an even deeper sense of awe. Not only did she work remotely as a nurse during the pandemic reviewing lab reports and medications, but she also helped our kids with online learning, and she has done it all while struggling with severe health issues. The whole experience made me appreciate her even more. She says it reminded her to

enjoy every moment she has with me, the kids, and the rest of our friends and family.

So, this Mother’s Day, that’s exactly what we’re planning to give her! We’re lucky to have both sides of our family living here locally, so I’m going to invite her mom and my mom over for a big Mother’s Day dinner. The kids and I will do our best to show them how much we love them and how grateful we are. That said, this Mother’s Day, I don’t want to just shout out my wife — I want to thank all the moms out there, and especially any moms, stepmoms, or single dads reading this newsletter! Without you and your incredible work, the rest of us wouldn’t survive. It’s a pleasure to help moms every day in my work at the clinic, and an even bigger honor when they trust me and my team with their kids. If you’re one of those moms, thank you so much for your faith, support, and everything you do. Happy Mother’s Day!

Thank You!

P.S. If you see our assistant, Zach Katzman, next time you come into the clinic, be sure to congratulate him and call him Dr. Katzman. He just graduated with his doctorate and has officially been promoted from an assistant to a full-fledged physical therapist. We’re proud of you, Zach!

Clearing the Air — Indoors What You Can Do

“Everyone was wonderful! Thank you to Dave, Anthony, and PJ. I was experiencing low back pain that was preventing me from playing softball and now I am pain free!”

The air inside our homes isn’t always the cleanest. No matter the time of year, many factors can influence the quality of the air you breathe, including dust, dander, pollen, and many different pollutants. To clear the air inside your home or office, understand what impacts indoor air quality and then take steps to improve it. Here are some ideas. What is indoor air quality? The term describes how the air in your home or place of work affects your health and comfort. Factors that influence indoor air quality include temperature, humidity, ventilation, mold from excess moisture, and exposure to chemicals. Common and persistent symptoms of poor indoor air quality include:

–Olivia M.

• • • •

Airway infections

Irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat Mental fatigue and headaches

Coughing, hoarseness, or wheezing

Dizziness Dry skin

• •

Nausea

What causes poor indoor air quality? It may be a result of an inadequate fresh air supply, poor ventilation system maintenance, pollutants (like cleaning supplies, sprays, office machines, pesticides, or smoke from candles or poorly vented stoves/fireplaces), micro-organisms, or various contaminants brought into the home from outside. How can you improve indoor air quality? While the sources of poor indoor air quality are varied, you can do several things to improve your air and breathe easier. Here are a few common options: Use an air purifier. You can get one for a single room or install one that will purify the air in your entire home. Read the specifications carefully to ensure it meets your needs, whatever you choose. Run your air conditioner or furnace. This is especially important for homes with central air. As air moves, it passes through the central air filter, helping reduce dust and dander. Find and eliminate mold. Mold severely reduces the air quality in your home. However, if you are having a hard time locating and removing the mold, call in a professional to take care of it. Keep your windows closed. Consider the outside air quality before opening windows. If you live near a busy road or construction site, or if it’s fire season, close your windows to keep the pollution out.

“I have been dealing with low back and knee issues for a long time and received excellent results here at Cornerstone Physical Therapy. All the therapists have been excellent, caring, and dedicated to making me stronger and have pushed me to do better. A special thanks to Zach, PJ, Anthony, Tyler, and Dave. I highly recommend Cornerstone!”

HEY, PARENT OF THE YEAR — TREAT YOURSELF! 3 Reasons a Massage Is the Perfect Gift for a Parent

Imagine this: You have three young kids at home and you also work a full-time job. Somehow, you still manage to buy groceries and corral the kids into the car for soccer practice and taekwondo. You successfully made it through an entire year of virtual learning (with a few tears), but sometimes, you’re tempted to hide in the pantry and lock the door just to get a minute for yourself. Does that sound familiar? Maybe you’re a busy parent and don’t have to imagine this scenario because you live it, or maybe you have a spouse or sibling who superheroes their way through it every day. If so, consider investing in the ultimate Mother’s Day/ Father’s Day gift to finally give that hardworking parent a break: a certificate for a therapeutic massage. Here are three reasons to give it instead of flowers, chocolates, or even breakfast in bed. First, therapeutic massage boosts your immune system. When you’re overworked and exhausted, your immune system suffers, and who wants to add a cold or cough on top of the other junk you have to deal with?

Second, massage lowers your stress levels. After a year of parenting in a pandemic, it’s safe to assume your stress and tension are through the roof. A massage can help! According to Mayo Clinic, a 60-minute massage will decrease the cortisol (stress hormone) levels in your blood by an average of 30%. Finally, massage is a solo activity, and it just feels good. Considering how hard you work, you deserve some pleasure and an hour to yourself. A massage therapy appointment will give you that along with the health benefits. If your holiday of choice has already passed by the time you’re reading this newsletter, don’t worry — parents deserve to be celebrated year-round, so it’s never too late to treat yourself or the amazing mom, dad, stepmom, or stepdad in your life! To book a massage with Cornerstone PT & Wellness Center’s massage therapist or buy a certificate, call our clinic at 732.499.4540.

Could Vaccine Passports Open Doors for Travel?

Could Vaccine Passports Open Doors for Travel?

Are you hoping to travel this summer? Not like how you “traveled” from your bedroom to your living room couch all this past year, but really travel — get out and see the world beyond your hometown.

Now, you might be sitting on the same couch you’ve sat on for the past year, thinking, “Well, I would like to travel internationally after I get vaccinated!” However, this proposal is not without concerns. Firstly, health care officials still don’t know if vaccinated people can transmit the virus. So, even if they’re vaccinated, they could still spread it to unvaccinated people around the world.

With the COVID-19 vaccines finally available, millions of people are becoming immune to the virus that has ravaged the global economy, especially in the areas of tourism and hospitality. Industry leaders in these sectors are understandably eager for the vaccine to bring back tourism. Some are hoping vaccine passports will play a part in jump-starting tourism around the world. Vaccine passports are a means by which someone can prove they have been vaccinated against COVID-19 and are, therefore, free to travel internationally. Some

Another concern is a vaccine passport’s potential to create classes of “haves” and “have nots” among travelers. Many developing countries won’t receive the vaccine for another few years. Should they be barred from returning to normal? Similarly, could the vaccine passport be abused domestically, enabling private businesses to bar customers from their spaces without proof of vaccination? Finally, what form would these passports take if they were to exist? Would they be on a smartphone app? A laminated card? A verified doctor’s note?

countries are eager for the sort of verification these passports could bring, should they exist. The Seychelles, Cyprus, Romania, and other countries have all said they would welcome tourists who could prove they were vaccinated.

So, while the prospect of traveling far and wide this summer after getting vaccinated is exciting, it might be better to temper your expectations for now and hope for clearer guidelines in the near future.
