HEY, PARENT OF THE YEAR — TREAT YOURSELF! 3 Reasons a Massage Is the Perfect Gift for a Parent

Imagine this: You have three young kids at home and you also work a full-time job. Somehow, you still manage to buy groceries and corral the kids into the car for soccer practice and taekwondo. You successfully made it through an entire year of virtual learning (with a few tears), but sometimes, you’re tempted to hide in the pantry and lock the door just to get a minute for yourself. Does that sound familiar? Maybe you’re a busy parent and don’t have to imagine this scenario because you live it, or maybe you have a spouse or sibling who superheroes their way through it every day. If so, consider investing in the ultimate Mother’s Day/ Father’s Day gift to finally give that hardworking parent a break: a certificate for a therapeutic massage. Here are three reasons to give it instead of flowers, chocolates, or even breakfast in bed. First, therapeutic massage boosts your immune system. When you’re overworked and exhausted, your immune system suffers, and who wants to add a cold or cough on top of the other junk you have to deal with?

Second, massage lowers your stress levels. After a year of parenting in a pandemic, it’s safe to assume your stress and tension are through the roof. A massage can help! According to Mayo Clinic, a 60-minute massage will decrease the cortisol (stress hormone) levels in your blood by an average of 30%. Finally, massage is a solo activity, and it just feels good. Considering how hard you work, you deserve some pleasure and an hour to yourself. A massage therapy appointment will give you that along with the health benefits. If your holiday of choice has already passed by the time you’re reading this newsletter, don’t worry — parents deserve to be celebrated year-round, so it’s never too late to treat yourself or the amazing mom, dad, stepmom, or stepdad in your life! THAI MINCED PORK SALAD Called “Larb” in Thailand, this popular street food comes together quickly and can be easily modified to suit your individual taste.

INGREDIENTS

• 5 tbsp uncooked Thai sticky rice • 1 lb ground pork • 1/2 tbsp chili flakes • 1/8 tsp sugar • 1/2 tbsp fish sauce

Juice of 1–2 limes, to taste

4 small shallots, thinly sliced

4 green onions, thinly sliced

Cilantro leaves, to taste

Mint leaves, to taste

DIRECTIONS

1. First, make toasted rice powder: In a frying pan over low heat, dry-roast the rice, stirring continuously until it turns golden brown and smells fragrant, about 15 minutes. 2. Let toasted rice cool, then grind into a coarse powder using a mortar and pestle, blender, or food processor. Set aside. 3. In a medium frying pan over medium-high heat, fry pork, breaking it into small pieces as you go, until fully cooked. 4. Remove from heat and add 1 heaping tbsp of toasted rice powder along with all other ingredients. Stir to combine. 5. Taste and adjust, adding more lime juice and herbs to suit your palate. Serve with rice. 3 732.499.4540
