It might be that my drive for resolving conflict, supporting others, and seeking justice stems from my “middle-child syndrome.” All the way through childhood, I was constantly playing mediator between my siblings, trying to find the best compromises or outcomes that served whichever one I felt was in the right. Not only that, but I was always playing team sports. All of this really proved that constant support is needed for any venture, whether it’s beating the other team or securing the funds to recover from a catastrophic injury. ver since I was a teenager, I knew I wanted to work with people. As I tell my wife, a huge portion of my job isn’t the end result. Whether we obtain money or a satisfactory resolution are both big concerns, but most of my time is spent simply providing counsel for my clients across every step of the process and providing them with the options they otherwise wouldn’t realize they had. Though I’m not a licensed therapist, you might say I do my fair share of“armchair psychology.”The people who come in to my office are often discouraged. It’s my job to get them to stay strong and look at the positives. Sure, life didn’t work out as planned, but at least they have their friends and family. There are always things they can do to anticipate future changes or services I can put them in touch with to in a bad situation. They’re debilitated by a terrible injury, downtrodden, and
1 help them through their situation. I need to be a constantly reassuring voice, telling them that there is still hope. They may not be on the easiest path a person walks, but with my guidance, there are many avenues they can take to move on and thrive. The attorney-client relationship is a powerful thing. After all, I’m working for months with many of these clients, aiding them every step of the way. THISMONTH INHISTORY
While young men were being cut down by the newest technology in the trenches, the folks back home in many European nations were being cut down by famine and disease. The war put immense pressure on lines of supply, pressure that was intensified by intentional blockades of civilian food supplies by both sides of the conflict. Historian N.P. Howard writes that these blockades “spread death and disease, as famine encroached upon the civilian populations of Central Europe.”Blockades on some countries, especially Germany, were not lifted after the war ended in 1918. Punitive measures like these were designed to prevent Germany from rising again. Instead, they resulted in needless death and more tensions between Germany and the rest of the world—which ultimately led to the SecondWorldWar a few decades later. Some countries fared better. America and Canada, untouched at home across the Atlantic, found what Canadian Lieutenant Timothy C. Winegard describes as“a context of nationhood and a sense of pride in an achievement”as new-world nations testing their mettle. They had no food shortages, and the war boosted their economies. This was particularly true in America, which entered the war relatively late for the final effort to topple the German alliance. It was the United States’first European intervention. But in August 1914, nobody knew any of that. Not the world leaders, not the men and women back home, and certainly not the millions of soldiers headed for the trenches. It was a lesson the world would never forget, even when war broke out again two decades later.

August 1914 may be the most important August in history. Earlier that summer, Archduke Franz Ferdinand had been assassinated in Sarajevo (in an attempt that was almost botched but was ultimately successful). Tensions that had been simmering in Europe for years began to boil over, and in August the first shots were fired— the beginning of WorldWar I. Patriotic and nationalistic jingoism amongst European nations soon turned to horror as the full picture of mechanized slaughter became clear to all. By the end of the year, a million European soldiers and citizens had been killed in the trenches and city streets. They were the first casualties of a war that would claim the lives of 16 million— and the souls of a rapidly globalizing world.

Rallies come in all shapes and sizes across the United States, but there are three events in particular that showup on every rider’s bucket list.

Theremay be some dispute over which rally is America’s biggest, but there’s no arguing about the oldest. LaconiaMotorcycleWeek has been around since 1923, and it shows no signs of slowing down. The marquee event of Laconia is a guided gypsy tour to NewHampshire Motor Speedway, culminating in a series of vintage bike races. Live music, hill climbs, and stunt shows are other can’t-miss Laconia fixtures. If your dad’s into bikes, Laconia ends on Father’s Day, making it the gift of a lifetime.
When the riders for IndianMotorcycles began the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, usually referred to as“Sturgis,”in 1938, there were a couple dozen attendees. DIRECTIONS 1. Set burners of gas grill to high heat and allow to preheat for 5 minutes. 2. Combine mayonnaise, sour cream, cheese, chili powder, garlic, and cilantro in large bowl. Stir until well combined and set aside. 3. Place corn on hot grill, rotating
