Aloha! My boyfriend Jeff and I just returned from our amazing trip to Honolulu Hawaii. We stayed on the island of Oahu in the middle of gorgeous mountains and walking distance from the sandy beach. After adjusting to the 5-hour time change, we started the day hiking to a secret waterfall only locals know about. The waterfall was awesome and very cold, but you can’t see a waterfall and not walk under it! We also hiked to the highest point of the island called Diamond Head. You can see the whole island from the top of Diamond Head and it also included old pill boxes at the top. My legs were very sore after that hike of stairs! MEGHAN’S HAWAIIAN ADVENTURE!

M O N T H L Y June 2017

Dear Friends,

Two of my favorite days of the year are coming up-Father’s Day and 4th of July.

I grew up idolizing my dad. He was a military man in the Philippines.

He would spend the week away from us on assignments. I remember being so excited looking forward to the weekend when he would come home.

Arlan Alburo, PT, MTC CEO, Co-Founder, OBTS

My dad taught me a lot. Hard work…dedication…discipline…and giving it your best in everything you do. His inspiration is in no small measure instrumental in why I immigrated to this great land of ours.

I was recruited out of college to come to the US...and these days I like to say I came here “legally”. I usually get a chuckle when I say that. I became an American citizen in April 2006. Whatever your political inclinations may be, I can sincerely say that the United States is still the greatest country on earth. I know how it is on the other side. And I count my blessings every day…and am thankful for all the men and women, past and present, who gave and continue to give us this great gift of freedom and independence.

Happy Father’s Day and an amazing 4th of July to all of you!

Sincerely,

Arlan Alburo

MEGHAN’S HAWAIIAN ADVENTURE!

Our next adventure was to dive with sharks! The sharks were 10-15 feet long. Yes, there was a cage, but that did not stop 15-18 sharks from swimming up to the cage. They were attracted to my underwater camera and would swim right up to it for a photo-op. I was nervous at first, but after entering the cage it was so cool to be right next to the sharks. It was the highlight of our trip. Later that week Jeff and I rented a car to travel to the North Shore, Dole Plantation, and other private beaches. We ended up seeing 4 amazing turtles along the beach that day! At one of the private beaches was a cliff to jump. I am very adventurous, but as I reached the top of the 30-foot cliff I started shaking with fear. I survived and will never forget that high jump. At the end of our trip, we visited Pearl Harbor and learned about the history of that day and saw a huge aircraft carrier returning

to harbor that day. After watching the sunsets on the beach, we thought about staying in paradise forever! It was a dream vacation!

PATIENT SPOTLIGHTS

“I am able to move more freely!” “I am able to move more freely and have less pain. The treatments I receive from Erica and staff have helped me a great deal. Would like to continue this as it makes me feel much better.” - Betty R.

“Very pleased with my results!” “Last summer I was in great pain, sciatica and back. Two epidurals helped substantially, but I still had some back pain, balance problems, and discomfort when I stood or walked any significant time or distance. My therapy here has resulted in a significant improvement in all areas. Much less pain, better mobility in balance. Very pleased with my results.” - Ted F.

“They make me feel like I’m the only one in the room.” “I have a spot in my back that gave me a sharp pain when I would turn a certain way. As of today, that hasn’t happened in a couple of weeks. I walked more secure now. I still have a little trouble getting up and standing straight. I feel confident this will improve. The therapists are great! They make me feel like I’m the only one in the room. Thanks!” - Jean S.

Summer is upon us. And summer means travel! But the best laid travel plans can be ruined by an aching lower back. In celebration of summer, here are our top 10 must-read tips for back pain-free travel this summer. 1. Pack light. You are better off using 2 or 3 smaller bags instead of one large bag. Remember that you will be lifting these bags in and out of your car trunk, off airport baggage carousels, into and out of overhead bins, etc. 2. Lift with your legs and never twist while lifting. Do not bend over at the hips when lifting. Instead bend your knees and lift using your legs. Most importantly, do not twist as twisting while lifting is one of the most common causes of back strain. Pivot with your feet so that your whole body moves instead of just twisting your back. 3. Ask flight attendants for help. If you explain you have a back condition, most flight attendants are eager to help. You’d be surprised how other passengers are also more than willing to help. If your bags are light, it’s even less of a burden to ask. 4. Aisle seat is best. Though most people prefer window seats, for someone with low back pain, an aisle seat can be a back-saver. It allows you to get in and out of your seat easier and move around the cabin more comfortably. 5. Do not hesitate to ask for wheelchair-assistance. If walking from your parking spot all the way to the gate will be too much for your back, ask for wheelchair assistance. This is best done when you make your reservations. This way you won’t have to carry your luggage, walk to your gate, or stand in line at security. Traveling with a letter from your physical therapist can help explain your condition and help get you the accommodations that you need. 6. Sit with support. Whether traveling by plane or going on a road trip, maintaining proper posture when seated is important. To maintain the natural inward curve in your lower back, use a folded towel or blanket or a commercial lumbar roll. 7. Consider packing a travel footrest. Placing your feet on something so your knees are higher than your hips can reduce pressure on your lower back. A piece of luggage is a good substitute for a travel footrest. 8. Get up and move. Prolonged sitting tends to stiffen our back muscles and put a strain on our spine. If possible, try to get out of your seat or your car at least once every hour. Better yet, once every 30 minutes. Movement helps your circulation going which keeps your back loose and relaxed. It will help prevent blood clots too! 9. Stretch your hamstrings and hip flexors. For long periods, when you can’t get up due to meal or beverage service, or when the seat belt sign is on for a prolonged period, do stretching exercises while seated. Like getting up and about, they can help alleviate pain and pressure from your back. 10. Bring cold and hot packs for quick pain relief. Despite taking the necessary precautions, your back pain may still flare up while you’re away from the comforts of home. If so, try applying a cold pack or alternating ice and heat. Ice and hot packs should be easily accessible while traveling. If not, you can simply put some ice in a plastic bag and apply it to the area of pain. Plan ahead by bringing disposable hot packs that heat up when you open them. Top 10 Must Read Tips For Back Pain-Free Travel This Summer
