dark and gloomy the depths of those caves might be, with water and at mosphere present,' it would be im possible to have biological sterility. The author was fortunate enough to be one of the small company who penetrated those black recesses long before they were opened to the public. In a very simple biological survey, of course, we know that near the mouth of the caverns vast numbers of flying mammals called bats have their habi tation, and they in turn perhaps are inhabited by various forms of life! They, however, live where the influ ence of light is felt. In the examination of the recesses of the caverns,- our party worked most of the time in utter darkness. Specimens of water were taken in three kinds of containers. One was made of a clear flint glass, the second was made of an amber material which had a value of about the density of a Wratten K 3 filter, and the third receptacle consisted of little lead flasks with a screw top. We found in the waters in the black, gloomy re cesses of the caves several common types of protozoa. These creatures not only lived where there was no light, but when they were brought out into - the brightness of the day they withered

and perished from the effects of the sunlight. The only specimens that we finally got alive to the laboratory were those which were contained in the lead flasks, which, of course, were impervious to light. Both of the foundations of the argument collapse. There was light before the fourth day of Genesis. Also, there is life that can live with out light; in fact, there is life that perishes under the direct influence of light. We would hasten to say that we are not thus arguing for the bio logical wisdom of the man Moses. We do not dream for an instant that Moses knew anything about proto zoology, and perhaps his knowledge even of botany was limited to that of his own generation. The point that we seek to make, however, is that when the Spirit of God inspired Moses to write the records of Gene sis, Moses was not restricted to his own wisdom. By the illumination of the Holy Ghost, he wrote things as they are and not as man thought them to be. This same basic premise could be called the thesis of these articles. Certainly it could be applied to every writer of the Old Testament or the New. (CONTINUED NEXT MONTH)

WHERE DID THE ANCIENTS SECURE THEIR SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE? (Continued from Page 12)

The argument based upon a mis conception of this paragraph and a misunderstanding of science, however, is that it would be impossible to have life before the fourth day of creation. We would hasten to reply that the conclusion is too broad to be estab lished in science. In fact, there is life that cannot exist where there is light! This may be shown clearly by the recital of an instance that occurred a number of years ago, when the United States Geodetic Survey was first ex ploring the Carlsbad Caverns and preparing them for the enjoyment of the general public. Dr. Willis T. Lee, who was in charge of the work, made a statement to the effect that in the dark and gloomy recesses of those in credible caverns no life of any kind existed. Immediately a number of eminent biologists leaped upon this utterance and stated that they would never agree to so broad a generalization un til it had been scientifically estab lished. They said that no matter how A stewardship revival broke out recently in Cali fornia Baptist Seminary during a ten-day option to buy this lovely 38-acre campus, located on the outskirts of Los Angeles, evaluated by two apprais ers at $1,200,000, After days of prayer by the Board, faculty, and students, the students pledged $3,000 and assisted in raising $50,000 in gifts and loans. It w&s the last day of the option. The bank did not begin the appraisal until the last two days, and it was not completed. The last minute the loan was refused. Others had announced that they were buy ing the campus. Our time and prayers had been spent in vain, it seemed; but God stepped in and moved a Baptist layman to assist in underwriting a satisfactory down payment. As late as Sunday, a day after the property was placed in escrow, others said they had bought the campus. When it was learned that California Seminary had purchased it, the office received calls to sell at a profit. Since God had worked so marvelously, the Seminary was deter mined that the campus should glorify Him until Jesus comes. This miracle campus consists of 15 modern build ings constructed of cement bricks and red tile roofs, including an administration building with a kitchen, dining room, lounge, and offices; a school building with a chapel; two dormitories; an apartment build ing; a library: six faculty homes: and a gymnasium with swimming pool, tennis court, and athletic field. There is room for further expansion. Other payments due are $50,000 by April 1, and $75,000 by July 1. With building restrictions in the offing, this move must be Providential.
