June 10, 1951 THE MISSION OF JESUS CHRIST Luke 4:14-22; 19:10; Mark 10:45; John 3:16 Pointers on the Lesson We are expected to study the Mis sion of Jesus Christ in this lesson. That is a big subject. The word mis sion comes from a Latin word mean ing to send. The mission of Jesus Christ thus has to do with the purpose of His coming into this world. Why did He leave the portals of glory to partake of our humanity and at last to suffer at Calvary? The brief pas sages chosen for our lesson this week give the answer to this question. Each p a s s a g e stresses some particular phase of His ministry. Christ the Fulfillment of Prophecy Luke 4:14-22 Not long after Jesus’ baptism at Jordan and His temptation in the wil derness, we find Him back again in His old home town. While in Nazareth “ as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day” (16). There is something very practical and instructive in this statement. We learn that as a boy and young man, Jesus had the habit of attending the place where the Word was read and prayer was wont to be made. Doubt less there was much about the serv ices in the synagogue that did not meet with His full approval. Yet He went. Some of God’s children need to have their consciences stirred on the matter of attendance at the place of worship. All sorts of excuses are made for not attending. Let us remember the words of Scripture: “ Not forsak ing the assembling of ourselves to gether” (Heb. 10.25). Let us all deter mine that'whenever it is possible we will walk along with Jesus to the place of worship. On one particular sabbath, our Lord was invited to read a portion of Scripture. He read from Isaiah, chapter 61, verse one, and through the middle of verse two, whereupon He closed the book and made the state ment that “ This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears” (21). He was the One about whom Isaiah and the rest of the prophets had spoken, the promised Messiah and Saviour. This was the time long-looked for, “ the acceptable year of the Lord” (19). Christ the Saviour of the Lost Luke 19:10 The whole gospel message is con tained in these few words. They tell exactly why Jesus left the ivory pal aces for this sinful world. It was to “ seek and to save” the lost. How much

THE BAPTIST BOOK STORE 352 S. Spring Street, Los Angeles 13, Calif. God’s people. When the work was completed after many days the people gathered in a street to hear Ezra, the scribe, read God’s law to them. A . special wooden pulpit was made for Ezra to use for this great meeting of worship and praise. So greatly did the people love the Word of God that they remained standing during the read ing. When Ezra praised God, all of the people answered, “ Amen, Amen,” as they lifted their hands up toward heaven. “ They bowed their heads, and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground.” The reader explained the Word of God clearly so that all might understand God’s message to them. Paul said, “We then . . . (are) work ers together with . . . (God).” Fre quently when people work together just in their own strength and with their own wisdom, they quarrel and become unhappy. Those who work to gether for God in love and asking for His wisdom and strength find joy and satisfaction in working together. Each child of God, no matter how young or how seemingly untalented and unat tractive he may be, is important in God’s plan for leading others to the Saviour. Ask Him that you might willingly work together with your family and your church, working to gether with God.
