sympathy also for “ In all their afflic tion he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them” (Isa. 63:9). Examples of Triumphant Sufferers Rev. 7:9, 10, 13,14 The passages before us portray those who will turn to God among the Gentiles during the dark days of the Great Tribulation. They are seen be fore the throne of God with “ palms in their hands,” the symbol of victory. For us the Lord has overcome the world (John 16:33). Let us receive the victory that is our privilege to have! The young man Timothy was dearly beloved by the great missionary, Paul. Probably Paul had led this young man to the Lord Jesus Christ, for he often speaks of Timothy as my son. Timothy was Paul’s companion and helper during many of his missionary trips to preach the gospel. Timothy was imprisoned, as was Paul, for preaching about the Saviour. Timothy rapidly grew in the Lord, for we find that Paul left him to take his place in the church at Ephesus. Many and difficult were Timothy’s duties. He needed much advice and spiritual help. To Timothy Paul wrote two letters which are in our Bible. They are First and Second Timothy. Today we are going to read part of the second letter from Paul to Timothy. Paul is warn ing Timothy that he must endure hardship as a good soldier for the Lord Jesus. He asks Timothy to “ be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” Timothy is asked to preach the gospel exactly as he heard it from Paul so that those who hear him speak will be able to correctly teach God’s Word also. Paul warned Timothy to “ Remember . . . Jesus Christ.” As long as Timothy stayed close to his Lord, he had no need to fear. Paul reminded his young friend how he was in prison for the sake of the gospel, but nothing was too great a price to pay for the privilege of tell ing others about the Saviour. Such strength as Paul and Timothy possessed does not come in any human way. It does not come by just decid ing to be brave and strong. It can come only as we let the Lord Jesus completely rule our lives. Paul said, “ I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” Only He can give the strength and the courage that are necessary to live for Him each moment of every day! Helps for the Children A Courageous Christian 2 Tim. 2:1-9 Memory Verse: “ Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus” (2 Tim. 2 : 1 ).

The Need for Vigilance 1 Pet. 5:8,9

The devil is not now in hell. He is in the world today doing all that he can to bring defeat to the cause of Christ. He is the “ prince of the power of the air” (Eph 2:2) and has access to the inhabitants of this world dur ing this dispensation. Therefore if be lievers are to be victorious they must be on guard against Satan’s tempta tions and snares. He must be resisted and we have the promise that if he is resisted “ he will flee from you” (Jas. 4 :7 ). The Supply of Divine Grace 1 Pet. 5:10,11 The child of God has the assurance through this apostolic benediction that in his experiences of trial and suffering for Christ’s sake that God’s grace is perfecting His own. A knowl edge of this fact will sustain God’s servant under trial. God has a purpose in letting His children come under the hand of affliction. Then after awhile it will all be glory! The Consciousness of God’s Presence Rev. l:9 -lla It was while John was suffering banishment on lonely Patmos for Christ’s sake that he heard behind him the voice of “Alpha and Omega” (11a). It is always so. God does not forsake His children when they are in the experience of suffering. His presence and voice are there. And His
