NATIONAL INDIAN GAMING ASSOCIATION RESOLUTION 01-LAS-BOD-7-19-21 TITLE: To approve the process for changing the name of the National Indian Gaming Association WHEREAS, the National Indian Gaming Association (“NIGA”) is an intertribal association of 184 federally recognized Indian Tribes established to support Indian gaming and defend Indian sovereignty; and WHEREAS, Indian Tribes are sovereigns that pre-date the United States, with prior and treaty protected rights to self-government and to our Indian lands, and WHEREAS, the Constitution of the United States, through the Treaty, Commerce, and Apportionment Clauses and the 14th Amendment, recognizes the sovereign status of Indian Tribes as Native nations established prior to the United States; and WHEREAS, before the United States, Indian nations were independent sovereigns with complete authority over our lands and our citizens; and WHEREAS, the National Indian Gaming Association was incorporated in the District of Columbia in 1986 as a nonprofit mutual benefit corporation organized under the District of Columbia Nonprofit Corporation Act (the “Nonprofit Act”). WHEREAS, The purpose of NIGA is to: • To promote, protect and preserve the general welfare and interests of Indian tribes through the development of sound policies and practices with respect to the conduct of gaming activities in Indian country; • To assist Indian tribes and the federal government by providing technical assistance relating to the Indian gaming industry wherever such assistance may benefit the common interests of NIGA members and the Indian gaming community generally; • To disseminate information to the Indian gaming community, the federal government and the general public on issues related to the conduct of gaming in Indian country; • To preserve and protect the integrity of gaming conducted in Indian country; and • To maintain, protect and advocate Indian tribal sovereignty; WHEREAS, the National Indian Gaming Association has a sizeable presence in Washington DC and nationwide and is commonly referred to by its acronym, NIGA;
