2021 TS Board Book

WHEREAS, the acronym NIGA is commonly misread or closely associated with an offensive slur rooted in the historical disenfranchisement of the Black community in the United States; WHEREAS, as a national organization, representing disadvantaged peoples, it is incumbent upon us to ensure that we do not perpetrate harm on another group, regardless of our own innocent intentions; WHEREAS, the National Indian Gaming Association is on record supporting racial and social justice; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, National Indian Gaming Association will begin the process of changing its name to be more reflective of the Native Nations we serve; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Board of Directors will establish a working group to develop options for changing the organization’s name and report back to the Board of Directors during the Mid-Year meeting of the Board; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, National Indian Gaming Association will cease using the acronym, “NIGA”; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, staff of the National Indian Gaming Association are directed to do all things necessary to ensure the intent of this resolution is carried out; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution shall be the policy of the National Indian Gaming Association until it is withdrawn or modified by subsequent resolution. CERTIFICATION The foregoing resolution was adopted by the Board of Directors at a meeting of the National Indian Gaming Association, held on July 19, 2021, Las Vegas, NV, with a quorum present.
