Algebra 2 Companion Book, Volume 1

2.2.2 Curve Fitting With Linear Models Key Objectives • Fit scatter plot data using linear models with and without technology. • Use linear models to make predictions. Key Terms • Correlation is a description of a relationship between two data sets that can be used to help analyze trends. • The line of best fit is the line that comes closest to all the points on a scatter plot. It can be used to make predictions. • The correlation coefficient r is a measure between − 1 ≤ r ≤ 1 of how well the data set is fit by a model (equation). The statistical study of the relationship between two variables is called regression. A scatter plot is helpful in understanding the form, direction, and strength of the relationship between two variables. Correlation is the strength and direction of the linear relationship between two variables.
