Complex numbers can be represented graphically on a special coordinate plane called the complex plane. In the complex plane, the horizontal axis represents real numbers and the vertical axis represents imaginary numbers. To graph a complex number a + bi on the complex plane, think of a as the x -coordinate and b as the y -coordinate of an ordered pair ( x , y ).
