Algebra 2 Companion Book, Volume 1

5.2.3 Operations with Complex Numbers (continued) Example 3 Adding and Subtracting Complex Numbers

Adding and subtracting complex numbers is similar to adding and subtracting algebraic expressions by combining like terms. Combine the real parts and combine the imaginary parts. The set of complex numbers has all of the properties of the set of real numbers. So, the Commutative, Associative, and Distributive Properties can be applied when simplifying complex number expressions.

Example 4 Adding Complex Numbers on the Complex Plane Complex numbers can also be added by using coordinate geometry.
