On The Cover Brian Gonzales’ grandad bought this ’65 Chevy C10 new, gifting it to Brian as his first car. At the 40th Rocky Mountain Street Rod Nationals he was gifted a “Rep/Safety Pick” for his C10 in front of a huge crowd. This well-earned gift Brian worked on over the years by adding a Mustang II IFS, 385-horse Chevy 350 from Blueprint, ’59 Impala dash, 20-inch Raceline wheels and a Ford 8.8-inch rear.

2025 StreetScene Cover Photo Contest

I t’s that time of year again when, as a member of the National Street Rod Association, you have the opportunity to submit a picture of your vehicle for the cover of StreetScene thanks to our annual Cover Photo Contest. The StreetScene Cover Photo Contest for 2025 will come to an end December 5, 2025, with judging to follow soon after. Early submissions will have a better chance of being featured on one of three covers early in 2026. Following the Cover Photo Contest issues we’ll be showcasing Honorable Mention submissions as well. For those new to the contest, it’s open to all NSRA members but the member entering the photo does not have to be the photographer. All photos entered must be of street rods, customs or performance vehi- cles that are 30-years-or-older and must be of vertical format. Submissions should be in digital format and taken by a camera with a minimum of 3- megapixels (six or more is preferred) and at the highest quality setting. The image needs be saved in tiff (.tif) or JPEG (.jpg) formats at the highest quality setting. Please do not sharpen the image or go crazy with color editing. Please send your CD or DVD to the StreetScene Editorial Office, Cover Photo Contest, 11290 Showdown Lane, Moreno Valley, CA 92557. The best way to submit your cover image for the highest quality is on a CD or DVD but if you choose to submit an e-mail attachment the image needs to be less than 10mb of data for easy and universal transmission. If the image is larger you’ll need to save a lower level quality version and that is why we are recommending submitting your photo on a CD or DVD. E-mail submissions should be sent to tomvogele@veri- zon.net. It’s important to properly frame the photo- graph for use on the cover of the magazine. Keep in mind that the main subject should be positioned so the area at the top of the photo has enough open area for the StreetScene ban- ner and the mailing label on the lower left. It’s always a good idea to leave additional room

around the main subject to allow for cropping by our art directors. Many times we get inter- esting photos, but they are a horizontal image of the side of the car and we do use some of these photos for interesting Table of Contents spreads occasionally. In some cases we crop cars or enlarge the image if it is exceptional or an interesting setting, but usually we receive submissions that don’t require that. A vertical format usually refers to a front or rear 3/4 angle of the car. Driving/moving shots are always prized and catch our attention! They are perfect for front or rear 3/4 angles. Please refer to the early 2025 issues for the winners of the 2024 Cover Photo Contest and then check out our May 2025 issue for last year’s Honorable Mentions. We know during 2025 many of you are enjoying cruising this great country traveling to events or simply for fun. We encourage you to take the time to capture your rodding moments out on the road where some of our best covers for this contest are captured. However, if you look around your local area we’re sure you can find an interesting backdrop for your photos. So get creative, create a lasting memory that could be framed and hanging on your family’s wall for generations to come. Share the results with us by December 5, 2025, and your image may grace the cover of StreetScene in early 2026! Tom Vogele tomvogele@verizon.net 2024 Cover Photo Contest Winners

Vintage Air “Authorized Distributor” List Grows

K wik Performance recently became an official author- ized distributor for Vintage Air, continuing a partnership that has spanned more than 15 years. In 2009 Kwik Performance A/C compressor brackets began being offered as an installation option in Vintage Air’s SureFit™ kits. These brackets helped thousands of builders seamlessly integrate air conditioning into muscle cars and C10 and OBS trucks. In addition, Kwik Performance offers a complete one-stop source for everything from Chevy LS, SBC, BBC, LT (gen 5) for accessory brackets. In addition they offer A/C hose kits and full Vintage Air A/C systems, all engineered to work together for high quality fit. Kwik Performance President Robert Powell stated, “We’ve been behind the scenes with Vintage Air kits for over a decade and, as an authorized distributor, we’re able to serve customers by providing the exact package of everything they need for a clean, reliable A/C install in their Chevy engine-pow- ered project.”

across the industry.” With the continued popularity of LS engine swaps, Kwik Performance’s expanded product offerings can be found at kwikperf.com and while they great- ly simplify install and build time, more importantly, they ensure everything lines up the first time, whether it’s a weekend garage proj- ect or a high-end-level show truck.

Vintage Air’s President Rick Love commented, “Kwik Performance has been a valued partner of ours for more than 15 years. Their A/C compressor brackets have consis- tently delivered the kind of fit, func- tion and reliability our customers expect from Vintage Air systems and their authorized dealers. They know our products, they under- stand engine swap challenges and they’ve earned the trust of builders “High-and-Tight” alternator/power-steering bracket for LS Truck/SUV (‘99-13) and Camaro (‘10-15) crank pulley and water pump spacing.

Rocky Mountain Garage Tours

By Judie & Eric Rawls

E arly arrivals for the 40th Rocky Mountain Street Rod Nationals gathered at Milberger Farms on Wednesday, June 25, and after breakfast and sweet rolls embarked with the Outlaws Car Club on the 2025 Rocky Mountain Garage Tour. The first stop was a visit to Justin Manweiler and his family’s shop and car collection. Greeting us outside was his ‘62 409, four- speed, ‘Bubble Top’ Chevy. Next to the Chevy was a black-on-black ‘63 Ford Galaxy sporting a 427 and four-speed. Several other col- lectables were residing in the

building, including a ‘68 Shelby GT 500 and a ‘60 Buick wagon. After a drive to the north side of Pueblo, we arrived at Nash Baros’ shop and after checking out his bright yellow ’34 five-win- dow out front and the other cars in the shop, we all enjoyed his collection of die-cast race cars. Next, we motored south across Hwy 50 to Ed Renck’s garage and his 260mph Model A Bonneville record holder. Ed fired the A in the shop and had also invited Victor Sanchez and son Benny to bring the family’s blown fuel Chrysler competition roadster cackle car.

When it was fired, the whole north side of Pueblo heard it! When our hearing returned, we traveled to Lyle Anderson’s garage. It’s home to three Hudsons, a ‘33 Ford pickup, and a mid ‘60s F-100. Moving along, we arrived at our last garage stop, the garages of Les Robinson and the amazing collection of Domonica and Rick Esgar. Les has two garages, one housing ‘39 and ‘40 Ford coupes, a ‘57 Chevy and a ‘70 Mustang. The second shop has a ‘52 Ford pickup under construction. We’ve been to the Esgar’s before, and as I wrote after

By Kevin Webb NSRA Autocross Director autocross@nsra-usa.com kevin@hotrodcustomgarage.com

B ill Simpson’s passion for speed emerged early at the age of 18 and while recovering from a drag racing crash in 1958, he had an epiphany about the critical role of safety in racing. Over the span of his career, Bill Simpson developed more than 200 innovative safety products, significantly enhanc- ing driver protection in motorsports. Simpson Performance Products is headquartered in New Braunfels, Texas, where much of the compa- ny’s harness systems, HANS head restraints, and flag- ship parachutes are manufactured and tested on site. Simpson fire suits and crew uniforms are manu- factured outside Los Angeles, California, in their 52,000 sq. ft. facility and they have a factory in Pedrengo (Italy) where helmets are manufactured. Simpson also employs a large customer service and sales team based in Mooresville, North Carolina. Preston Folkestad, Director of Marketing at Simpson Performance, stated, “Simpson has always been part of racing at every level from Pro Stock to parking lot Simpson Performance Products

cone sessions. Our goal is to honor that legacy by giving today’s autocross drivers access to the same quality and protection the pros trust.” Every five years, the Snell Foundation intro- duces a new helmet safety standard and with SA2025 on the horizon (officially going into effect October 1, 2025), the industry is preparing for its next evolution. Helmets certified to SA2015 will begin phasing out of compliance for many sanctioning bodies, including SCCA, NSRA and NHRA, with SA2020 remaining and SA2025 being introduced to become the new expected standards. www.tptools.com/ss SKAT BLAST ® Abrasive Blast Cabinets remove rust & paint FAST

By Mike Forsythe

B ring your old Buick engine back to life with this new, all-color Workbench-edition book. Buick has an interesting history with its 8-cylinder engines. In 1931, it began with the Straight-8 engine, using overhead valve (OHV) technol- ogy while most of the other manufacturers were using 4- or 6-cylinder valve-in-block designs. When all the GM divi- sions were converting to V-8 OHV postwar designs, Buick joined the party in 1953 with a design that was dubbed the “Nailhead.” This design lasted a little too long, and Buick finally replaced it in 1967 with a more modern design. The new design lasted until the mid-‘70s, when emissions compliance spelled the end for big-blocks, and in 1980 for the 350. In “Buick V-8 Engines 1967- 1980: How to Rebuild,” veteran author Mike Forsythe takes you through the complete process of rebuilding and restoring a Buick V-8 to factory condition. Covered in a thorough step-by-step for- mat are the tools required, the disassembly process, analysis of what went wrong, parts selec- tion and replacement, the machining process, preassembly, final assembly, and the break-in process. For those who are look- ing for a little more performance, a chapter about performance modifications is also included.

The automotive indus- try was going through many safety regulation changes concerning seat frames, which led to new development of frames and seat restraints to be able to meet new highway safety regulations. While working in the automotive industry, Jim starting privately building his own hot rods. Feature design by Paul Sloup Article & photography by Louie Mayall

J eff Snyder wanted a high-end roadster he could put some miles on. He spent a lot of time thinking about the how, and after talk- ing to the folks at Love Kustoms Automotive Design, he finally decided to take advantage of the prevailing market. It’s a scary fact, but due to the loss of older rodders, today street rods are cre- ating a buyers’ market. Jeff found a great starting point, an older, dated build he purchased for dimes on the dollar in parts and then sent over to

the fine folks at Love Kustoms to be perfected. The best part of buying an already put together rod is that you can get out and drive it before you begin the perfection process. It’s easy to figure out all the big things that are right or wrong during a short drive, but the only way to know all the little things that make it truly your car is to put some miles on. Let’s take a look at the result of one man’s journey down that road. The frame has been fully boxed with a tubular center crossmember, the rear was Z’d, and it’s been bobbed front and rear. The front suspension is a stainless Heidt’s SuperRide with tubular control

arms, a Flaming River rack and pinion, Aldan coil- overs, and Wilwood brakes. The rear suspension is also a Heidt’s independent with Wilwood brakes actuated by a billet master cylinder by Master Power, tubular A-arms, Aldan coilovers and a 3.50 posi differential. The powerplant of choice is a 5.7 LS1 (346ci) wearing Borla ‘Eight Stack’ injection, Holley Terminator ignition and computer, Sanderson headers feeding Borla mufflers, Scott’s Hot Rods valve/coil covers, a Concept One front runner pulley system, and it’s all backed up by a built 4L60E electric automatic overdrive. Jeff loved the exterior of the car he bought, so SEPTEMBER 2025 31

it stayed almost the same. The Dearborn body is one of the Downs fiberglass versions with Dapper Lighting RGB Halo’s, custom LED taillights, rollup windows and a retractable top. The paint is the same Electric Blue Pearl from PPG that came on the car with a full color sand from Love Kustoms. The look is finished off with 17/18-inch Billet Specialties wearing Toyo Rubber. The interior is filled with Vintage Air, Classic Instruments, a Rockford Fosgate sound system, a Lokar shifter, and a Billet Specialties steering wheel. Kings Upholstery stitched light gray leather around Fiero seats and stitched the medium grey top. Love Kustoms

rewired the rod with an American Autowire Hwy 22 kit and Jeff hit the road. In the end, Jeff and the crew at Love Kustoms didn’t make a lot of major changes. Some things they planned on changing ended up staying the same, some were simply tuned up, and a few things were gutted and redone. The rod is now ready for Jeff and Shanynn (wife) to cruise into retirement checking out our country from behind the wheel of a very comfy and very bitchin’ ’32 Ford roadster. Sounds like heaven to me and I hope to see you out enjoying your slice of heaven before winter comes.

Mobile Bay Street Rod Nationals 2nd

I n 2024 the NSRA added two new events to their schedule featuring a Friday/Saturday two-day format. One of those events was held at the “The Grounds” in Mobile, Alabama, and this month we’re bringing you coverage of the 2nd Mobile Bay Street Rod Nationals. The Grounds is home to the Greater Gulf State Fair and they were ready to receive the hun- dreds of rumbling street rods, customs, classic cars and pickups, plus performance street machines, for two days of rodding fun down south. Down south usually means warmer temperatures and June was warm around Mobile this year so during the Awards Program Event Director Will Seibel told the attendees plans were in the works to hold the event next year in April. Until the contracts are signed and the dates announced let’s look at the 2025 happenings held June 20-21. For a two-day show quick registration becomes even more important so the capable crew of Annette and Mike Harbin, Lesa Seibel, Michelle Chopin, Diane Miller, Janet Adams and Craig Wolf from the Pharoahs Car Club of Alabama, Host Club of the event, joined together to

speed things along. Thursday evening last year’s Spotlight Builder, Metal Brothers Hot Rods, hosted an open house and Kick-Off party for early arrivals and this year’s Spotlight Builder, Nobody Customs & Restorations from Lafayette, Louisiana, prepared to meet the participants and spectators for their time in the spotlight this year. Everything from a Swap Meet and Women’s World to Safety Inspections and Streets of Rods were being held while other awards were being picked leading up to Saturday evening. Kay Staggs hosted a Ladies Tea for 96 ladies with generous support from Sanderson Headers, Andrew Myers State Farm and the Michelle/Meador Families. The Southern Brushslingers raised over $6,250 for the Abba Shrine for Children in Mobile. Ed and Michelle Chopin coordinated the Games and a Coloring Contest and Kay Staggs put together a Quilt Display. Saturday evening did come fast, but as you can see from our coverage the quality and variety of vehicles that showed up and the list of activities made for a great time. The “Martini Shakers” sponsored by Transmission Magicians livened things up at the Awards Program and, just like a three-day event, Super Prizes were given out and three lucky rodders won $2,000 each in the $weep$take$ Giveaway. With all this action packed into two days there’s every indication this event may thrive in cooler temps. Stay tuned for the 2026 NSRA Event Schedule for next year’s dates in April. SEPTEMBER 2025 37

Mobile-local Ronnie Beasley, Jr. came out in his ’32 Ford pickup with a Chevy 358/five-speed powertrain, ET Wheels with Michelin rubber, the beautiful Dana Red paint, and he won the early “One Fine Truck” pick.

Norbert Conzelman out of Kenner, LA, loves cruising his “Rep/Safety Pick” winning ’71 Chevy Nova that has ZZ6 power, a Tremec TKX manual, Global West suspension, RaceStar wheels, Cromax Black paint, and 10 Hot Rod Power tours under its belt.

Everybody digs on Avis Beasley’s Johnson’s Hot Rods-built ’32 Ford coupe from Mobile, AL, including the judges for Alumicraft’s “Pros’ Pick.” Couldn’t be any nicer in our opinion!
