Enhancing water infrastructure: engineering safe and affordable drinking water solutions Mr. Sihuli Andoyi Isaiah 1 The Water Project, western Kenya; Water Quality Processing Team. 2 Kenya Chemical Society. E-mail: sihuliisaiah8@gmail.com. Safe and Affordable Drinking Water Access to safe and affordable drinking water is a fundamental human right and a acritical component of SD. Despite significant progress over the past decades, millions of people worldwide still lack reliable access to clean water with Springs, tanks, wells and boreholes ‘protected’ and branded as safe. To achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all by 2030, The Water Project (TWP) explores the challenges and opportunities associated with achieving innovative solutions and collaborative efforts needed to ensure water security for current and future generations. Through hydrogeological surveys and vetting, TWP protects natural springs and also constructs integrated tank systems to store and distribute harvested roof catchment water. In areas lacking surface water, advanced drilling techniques are employed to access aquifers and are fitted with pump systems. The design of these facilities prioritises environmental sustainability, accessibility and adherence to water quality standards. TWP equally conducts field experiments in Western Kenya on protected water points (PWP) for physical chemical properties and Thermotolerant coliforms (TTC); Escherichia Coli over m-Coliblue 24 broth and strict use of Whirl Pak bags. The study establishes that PWP are vulnerable to contamination which calls for secondary affordable water quality control practices; first flash systems and portable chlorine dispenser installation etc. This framework enhances water security, reduces prevalence of waterborne diseases and supports long term socioeconomic development.
