Chronic Illness & Depression by Ashley Koza, LCSW, EAP Counselor, Sinnissippi Centers
Did you know that studies have shown that one in five Americans have or will be diagnosed with a mental illness? According to the National Center Network of Depression Centers, depression ranks as the #1 cause for disability and depression ranks in the top 3 of workplace issues. There are several known causes of depression; examples of these are genetics, grief, and chronic illness. Depression can be a symptom of a chronic illness or can come when a loved one is experiencing a chronic illness. According to the National Institute of Mental Health there are illnesses that cause a higher likelihood for depression: • Cancer • Alzheimer’s disease • Coronary heart disease • HIV/AIDS • Diabetes • Parkinson’s disease • Epilepsy • Systemic lupus erythematosus • Multiple sclerosis • Rheumatoid arthritis • Stroke Depression can also be caused by a thyroid disorder, changes in the brain caused by a stroke or other illness that causes changes in the brain. According to research from the National Network of Depression Centers 80% of those treated with depression can see improvement within 4-6 weeks of treatment, but 2/3rd of individuals with depression do not seek treatment. Counseling may be a good option if you are experiencing depressive symptoms.
