Lessons From a Wheat Penny Collection

Did You Know This About the Viking Star?

• The chefs crack 17,920 eggs per week

Growing up with an older sister and four brothers had an impact on my childhood. For instance, I was trained early on to identify makes and models of cars when most girls didn’t care anything about them. I loved making forts, climbing trees, finding salamanders in the creek beds, and exploring in the woods. I thought I’d grow up and become a great archaeologist and find amazing treasures. When I learned that it involved hard digging with careful, slow cleaning — not to mention getting dirty and hot — that took the romance out of the profession for me. Besides learning to identify a ’57 Chevy and many other things, my oldest brother also taught

pennies and bring them home to me. Once she surprised me with a note that said, “You are more valuable to me than all the wheat pennies.” Of course, I’ve saved that. Did you know, like a lot of collectibles, those with errors are more highly valued? For instance, if you find one that has been “struck” (or imprinted) multiple times, it could be worth thousands of dollars. Or if you find one with a Lincoln head on the front but was actually printed on a dime base instead? One like that sold for $138,000. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3 ...

me to look for wheat pennies, and I now have my own collection. They’re a great investment, too. I joke they’ve probably doubled in value over the years — and how many investments have that kind of track record with so little margin of risk?! One thing I love about the wheat penny search is it trains you to look for something special amidst the ordinary. When our oldest daughter got her first job working at Publix Supermarkets as a cashier, she would regularly look through the change and “buy out” the wheat

Great Vacations Matter Because Great Memories Matter Most

Tales From Our Sails

This segment of “Tales From Our Sails” features our two daughters, Cherise and Meredith, who recently sailed on Viking’s Romantic Danube itinerary. The girls have taken an adventurous spin on a sibling rivalry in a race to visit the most countries. Both have visited more than 35 countries, and Meredith has seen every continent but Antarctica (much to Cherise’s chagrin). They took advantage of Viking’s reduced

air and added an air deviation so they could explore other parts of Europe in addition to their river cruise. This was Meredith’s second river cruise. Her first was a mother/daughter trip to Lyon and Provence to celebrate her master’s degree. While she thoroughly enjoyed both itineraries, this time she embraced “exploring the world in comfort.” As a connoisseur of food and wine, she says her favorite memory

She said, “You could tell they were really passionate about hosting Viking guests in their homeland, and it was a gift to learn about their experiences as locals.” Being travelers who are used to doing it all on their own, a Viking river cruise opened up a new way of seeing the world. “We enjoyed having everything taken care of. Viking made sure none of the art, history, and culture was missed, as it would have been if we were traveling alone.” Cherise playfully jokes that while she wants her next Viking itinerary to be Pharaohs and Pyramids , she would also settle for Antarctica “to beat her sister in continents.”

Breaking the Busy-Bored Cycle

3 STRATEGIES YOU CAN USE RIGHT NOW

It’s a common problem: People spend most of their days feeling too busy, only to feel bored during their free time. So how can you break the habit of scrolling through your phone and watching TV and make the most of the little time you have for yourself? Let’s talk about ways to break the cycle of boredom and busyness thus creating a more fulfilling life. 1. PLAN AHEAD. Schedule your days and weeks for an even workload to ensure your day doesn’t have huge gaps or work overflow. For example, if you have a large project, you can divide it into smaller tasks to keep yourself busy, yet not overwhelmed, throughout the week. You can also plan fun activities each day. This will help fight boredom and give you something to look forward to when you’re at work or while completing daily tasks. 2. PRIORITIZE TASKS. If you have trouble managing projects to the point where you feel you don’t have enough time, begin prioritizing specific tasks. It’s essential to complete the highest priority tasks so you won’t be up late in the

day trying to finish something important. If you plan ahead, you can number your tasks from most important to least. This will help ensure high-priority tasks are completed on schedule. 3. BE CURIOUS. One way to mute boredom and implement more creativity is by setting daily learning goals. These goals can be anything you want! Setting small goals and accomplishments will keep you curious, motivated, and focused. They also give you something to look forward to each day. Ask yourself what you want to learn today. Do you want to learn about a new culture? A language? If there is something you’ve always wanted to know, now is the time to put your thinking cap on! Boredom and busyness derive from the same source — there is a lack of quality in how you focus your attention. Luckily, the same strategies apply to both boredom and busyness. These tips will help you create a balanced mindset and allow you to push through your day without feeling overwhelmed or uninspired.

“A cheerful heart is good medicine.” –PROVERBS 17:22

We can learn two things from the wheat penny: First, find new ways to appreciate things commonly taken for granted.

Recently, I took a brilliant fall down the last half of the basement steps. Thankfully (miraculously!),

I didn’t break anything, but it did result a badly twisted, swollen knee for about a week. Obviously, it impacted my ability to move about, and I thought, “I’ll be really glad when I can walk without pain and exercise again. I’ve been taking that for granted!” Or when I’ve been sick with the flu and say to myself, “I’ll remember to enjoy feeling well when I get better!” Nothing like not having something to make you better appreciate it when you get it back. But don’t wait for something bad to happen — just imagine for a moment what it would be like to not be able to read, and then give an extra prayer of thanks for your eyes. Second thing: We’re often so busy trying to hide our imperfections that we don’t realize the value and uniqueness they bring to our lives. No one wants to be a moving train wreck, but as my middle daughter who was in modeling once said, “Perfection is really unattractive.” Case in point: Early in her career, model Lauren Hutton had difficulty hiding the gap in her front teeth and finally refused to try. Yet, she graced the cover of Vogue magazine 40 times, the most in the magazine’s history. Giving yourself permission to be human and pausing to learn from and appreciate the value of those mistakes adds dimension to your story and a dose of humility and relatability, too.

Directions 1. Arrange bottom halves of rolls in a greased 9x9-inch baking pan. Spread the cut side of roll bottoms with horseradish sauce. Layer with ham and cheese and replace tops. 2. In a small skillet, heat butter over medium-high heat, add onion, and cook and stir until tender (1–2 minutes.) Stir in remaining ingredients. Pour over rolls. Cover and refrigerate several hours or overnight. 3. Preheat oven to 350 F. Bake, covered, for 25 minutes. Then remove foil and bake 5–10 minutes longer or until golden brown.

In fact, I bet you have some treasures hiding in your change drawer just waiting to be noticed!
