A SHIFTED GOAL IS STILL A CONQUERED GOAL Creating Lifelong Partnerships — 29029 Everest Challenge Style!
I have returned from one of the greatest experiences of a lifetime! My August 29029 Everest Challenge hike in Utah was a greater success than I could have ever imagined — I’m still on a “mountain high!” Did I meet my goal of completing it in 30 hours this time around? No. But does this diminish my pride and happiness? Not at all! In fact, my sense of accomplishment feels magnified because had I been a lone wolf for the entirety of the hike — relying only on my determination, skill, and prowess — I’m confident I would have crushed my goal. However, early in the hike, my path crossed with two other financial advisors. It was their first time tackling this grueling challenge, and they were struggling and asked if they could hike alongside me. Without skipping a beat, I welcomed the opportunity to provide my companionship, support, and motivation to ensure they finished the hike safely. Right there, my personal goal of finishing the 29029 Everest Challenge in under 30 hours shifted to a goal of assisting others — something that is right up my alley! To play such a vital role in the lives of others and to help ensure they didn’t give up was extremely rewarding and worth every moment I could have shaved off of my eventual finish time, which was 35.5 hours, totaling approximately 29,000 vertical feet, 30 miles, 80,000 steps, 15,000 calories expended, and 2.5 hours of welcomed sleep. Most importantly, after completing this challenge, I left Utah with two new friendships. As many of you know, the motto here at Wolf Retirement Navigation is Building Smarter Plans and Lifelong Partnerships. Just like my clients are lifelong partners, my new friends and business relationships are as well. I know firsthand just how easy it is to give up out there, and you cannot place a price on the success of ensuring this did not happen. In life and retirement, we all set short-term and long-term goals. For me, since I first embarked on these Everest hikes, I had a long-term
goal of completing each hike. This time around, my short-term goal was to do so in under 30 hours. When I meet with my clients, we discuss their short-term and long-term goals for retirement, which are different for each individual. A short-term goal can be anywhere from one month to one year, and a long-term goal encompasses aspirations for years to come (5-10 years). Short-term goals can be set on your own. During times of inflation, maybe you’d like to get a better grasp on your expenses and cut costs. Long-term goals require a plan and visualization of your desired future. This can encompass health care, vacations, or investments. I first embarked on this 29029 journey in 2019, and it will continue. And your journey will continue, too, whether you contact me within 5-10 years before retiring, or you reached out to me for the first time while already retired — or somewhere in between. No matter the case, the important part is setting a plan into motion, keeping in mind that short-term goals are fluid due to the twists and turns life throws our way. As I soak in the pride and ”mountain high” I feel after returning from Utah, I am reminded that this is the feeling I want each of my clients to feel no matter what life throws at them. You are never alone in this journey. As Halloween approaches and brings along the spooky season, I don’t want you to ever have any fear about your finances, goals, or aspirations for your golden years. The one thing I ask is that you never procrastinate in contacting us, whether it’s for the very first time or the hundredth time. My team and I are always here to banish fears or concerns you may have. If your goals ever change with the tides of life, we will meet them head-on. And when a plan doesn’t work out the way you imagined

HUNGRY FOR HEALTH
The Shift Toward Plant-Based Eating
The appetite for plant-based foods isn’t slowing down — in fact, it’s rising. According to a 2021 Bloomberg report, by 2030, the plant- based food industry is projected to hit $162 billion! Eating plant- based means finding food sources that originate mainly from plants, inherently focusing on fresh produce, whole grains, beans, legumes, seeds, and nuts. Let’s explore the benefits of eating plant-based! Plant-based keeps your heart healthy. According to studies posted in the Journal of the American Heart Association, consuming a diet high in plant-based foods may lower the risk of heart attacks and cardiovascular disease. Meat contains saturated fat, which studies show increases the risk of heart problems. But, it’s also important to make sure that your plant-based choices are heart friendly too! Load up on fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and legumes and avoid refined grains, fatty foods, and sugary beverages! Plant-based lowers your blood pressure. Plant-based diets are linked to lower blood pressure, which greatly reduces the risk for strokes, cardiovascular disease, and Type 2
diabetes. The risk of hypertension, or high blood pressure, increases in people who consume large amounts of animal products such as meat and dairy. Even just limiting the amount of meat and dairy in your diet is proven to make a difference! Plant-based may reduce your risk of cancer. The nutrients present in plant-based foods reduce the risk of getting several types of cancer. Plant-based foods contain phytochemicals, which shield the cells in your body from damage and have awesome anti-inflammatory properties. So, load up on those legumes, whole grains, fruits, and veggies — your body will thank you! Plant-based can help you lose weight. Typically, plant-based foods are lower in calorie density than meats and other animal products, thus, you can fill up on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains without the same calorie burden you may experience from other sources of food. With all of the health-based advantages of shifting toward a plant- based diet, more people are catching on and making the switch or reducing their meat intake. What’s on your plate?
Scammers are taking advantage of the increasing availability of online information to gain access and develop plots to fraudulently obtain your personal, credit card, or bank account information. While you can’t always prevent fraud from occurring, there are steps to better protect yourself and your data to limit exposure to identity theft and fraud! THAT DOESN’T LOOK RIGHT …
Avoiding Online Phishing and Scams
Here are some tips to follow: Keep your software up to date.
Having the latest security software on your computer and mobile devices is vital. Ensure automatic updates are turned on to keep your web browser, email, and operating system safe and secure. Don’t open suspicious emails. If an email looks suspicious or out of place, it likely could be a phishing or scam attempt! Don’t open emails from senders you do not know and avoid clicking on links within the email. Set strong passwords. What exactly is considered a “strong” password? Make sure your passwords are not easily guessed by those who know you, and even more importantly, create complicated ones to prevent simple technology from guessing them. Ensure they are at least eight characters in length, a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, and include special characters. Maintain your privacy. Did you know hackers sometimes rely on social media profiles to decode passwords and answer security questions to reset passwords? Don’t share information on your social media platforms or with people you do not know.
Maintain a secure internet connection. Protect your home internet network with a password, and if you connect to a public network, be cautious when sending and receiving information over it. To keep your information and identity safe, be cautious while surfing the web, interacting on social media, making online purchases, or when opening, sending, or receiving emails. If something raises a red flag, don’t click on it! Your safety always comes first.

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT Sharing Heidi’s Story and Passion
During the pandemic, a dear client of ours, Heidi, was diagnosed with breast cancer and began chemo treatments. With excellent care, she was fortunate to avoid many of the treatment’s negative side effects and was not ill or tired. Downtime at home during this treatment and recovery period allowed her to focus on optimism and to continue to pursue her passion, writing a children’s book. Heidi has been a real estate broker and a manager at IKEA for the past 18 years. Finding time to write between these two obligations was tough. By turning her scary and unfortunate situation into positivity, she found the perfect time to complete her masterpiece. Her son, Brandon, a graphic arts major, made the characters come to life and illustrated the book — how perfect! Heidi Kirkman’s “The Deep Dark Depths of the Backyard” follows a firefly on his journey. Whenever he encounters a new creature or critter to help, he shines his light a little brighter. “I based the story on parables and stories in the
Bible,” Heidi tells us. “It’s all about letting your light shine bright to help others, and in the end, there’s a little surprise. When the firefly finally rests and the mom comes into the bedroom, the little girl looks up and smiles. The mom then tells her that she is the brightest light of all, lighting up the room with her smile.” Heidi wrote the book to be read with passion so she incorporated noises and actions for parents and teachers to act out while reading to children. “It comes alive through the noises and provides a good message to help the kids to feel good about themselves and want to shine their light a little brighter, too,” Heidi says. To support Heidi and share the firefly’s light with your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and wonderful children in your life, look for “The Deep Dark Depths of the Backyard” on Amazon. Thank you, Heidi, for sharing your passion and story with us! We admire you!

After all, “B” stands for “better”… or even “best!” The over-arching goal in retirement is to be financially free so we aren’t relying on paychecks to cover our desired lifestyle. Whether we need to alter goals, reassess your Plan A, or set a Plan B into motion, we are here. For all of you who offered your support, kind words, and well wishes on my epic 29029 adventure, it meant the world to me. I’m thrilled to have created two more lasting friendships and am humbled to place such an amazing experience into my memory books! I wish each and every one of you a happy, healthy, and safe Halloween! Remember we are always here for you, and I look forward to our next conversation!

3 Places to Travel This Season FALL IN LOVE WITH THE SCENERY!
Fall is the perfect time to plan a scenic vacation. You can find lower prices and fewer crowds at many popular destinations right now. Best of all, the views are incredible. From the changing colors of leaves to sunsets and mountains — a picture-perfect getaway awaits you! Here are three popular destinations to fall in love with this season. 1. Asheville, North Carolina Everyone can find something to enjoy in the mountains of the Carolinas. You can drive the Blue Ridge Parkway or hike the Appalachian Trail for breathtaking views of mountains and sunsets. For history fans, get lost at the Biltmore Estate and learn more about the Vanderbilts. If you’re a fan of the nightlife, Asheville is known as Beer City USA, with more than 30 breweries and over 100 local brews. 2. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming The wildlife in Yellowstone is active in the fall, so you’ll get a chance to see bison, elk, and eagles during your stay. You may even observe bears preparing for hibernation. If you love to be outdoors during the cooler months, then you will love biking, fishing, and hiking here during the fall. However, be aware that some roads will close for the winter in mid-October, so review park information ahead of time for accessibility.
3. Sedona, Arizona It may be too hot to visit Arizona during the summer, but the fall months are perfect because the temperatures drop somewhat. If you love to see trees bursting with colorful leaves, hike the Baldwin Trail and Cookstove Trail. Sycamore, oak, and maple trees will shade you with their colorful canopies. Also, each year, the city holds a Day of the Dead celebration you can attend at the Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village in late October. These are only three of the many breathtaking destinations you can visit this season. For more locations, go to TravelAndLeisure.com/ trip-ideas/fall-vacations/best-fall-vacations.
