On the Human Side National The Animal Agriculture Alliance recently hired Abby Kornegay as manager, issues and engagement. In this role, Kornegay is responsible for shaping the Alliance’s issues management and crisis communications strategy. Kornegay joins the Alliance team from her previous role as animal care program manager for Butterball, LLC . The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum inducted Gerald Timmerman into their Hall of Great Westerners during a recent awards ceremony. Timmerman and his family own feedyards and ranches in Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Texas and Oregon, and developed a meat processing center that became one of the largest independent meat packers in Omaha, Neb. Kansas Dave Nichols, Ph.D., Kansas State University animal science professor, was awarded the Purdue Animal Science Distinguished Career Award in April. He earned his bachelor's degree from Purdue University. Texas Two grants awarded to Texas A&M AgriLife will fund studies to improve responses to outbreaks of animal diseases like avian and swine flu in the United States. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service National Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Program awarded two grants totaling $668,166 to Texas A&M AgriLife Research and the Institute for Infectious Animal Diseases. The grant funding is directed toward two projects designed to address animal disease outbreak response and mitigation.

The Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine has named its equine skills lab at Mariposa Station “The Allsup Family Charitable Foundation Equine Clinical Skills Lab” after receiving a $1 million donation from the foundation. Company Compass Ag Solutions has hired Amanda Fuller, Ph.D ., as a futures broker and livestock insurance agent for their Hereford branch. Fuller is equipped to manage risk through traditional futures hedging strategies and also livestock risk protection insurance. ServiTech has named Ryan Hassebrook as their new president and CEO. He most recently served as the company’s director of business development.

JULIUS PLUSS, 100, passed away April 16, 2022, in Denver, Colo. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, he and his family developed feedlots and turkey operations in Weld County, Colo. Pluss was president of the Colorado Cattle Feeder’s Association in 1970. He worked in the family business with his brothers, nephews and others until they sold the companies to ConAgra in 1987. He is survived by his three children. ZAY GILBREATH, 82, passed away April 19, 2022, in Dallas, Texas. After receiv- ing his master’s degree from Kansas State University in 1963, he went to work for Cargill in their soybean processing division. He was with Cargill until his retirement in 2004. Gilbreath finished the last 28 years of his career as president of Caprock Industries, the Cargill-owned cattle feeding subsidiary at the time. During these years he also served as president and board member of the Texas Cattle Feeders Association and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte, and three sons. TOM BIVINS, Amarillo, Texas, passed away May 4, 2022. He was a founding part- ner in Corsino Cattle Company, a fully inte- grated cow-calf and stocker cattle operation. He was the vice president and director of Exell Cattle Company and part of the Bivins Brothers Partnership, a ranching opera- tion formed in 1977. Bivins was a dedicated family man and rancher who spent countless hours at his beloved XL Ranch. He is sur- vived by his wife, Julie, and four children.
