THE POWER OF MUSIC INFLUENCING THE WORLD ONE SONG AT A TIME
As Confucius once said, “Music produces a kind of pleasure that human nature cannot do without.”
especially the beat and timing, can assist with movement to enhance the treatment process.
Music serves many purposes in our lives. It’s a form of expression, a way to pass the time, and a trigger to get our creative juices flowing. It can take us back in time to revisit certain places and elicit specific feelings that were present when we may have first listened to a particular song, artist, or genre. For patients with dementia, music can help to bring old memories back. For those struggling with Parkinson’s, music,
Many of the amazing benefits that we reap from music falls back on one thing: endorphins. When we listen to music, endorphins are released by our brain. Similar to the “runner’s high” that we experience when running, when our minds are engaged by music, we can find ourselves getting surges of emotions — both happy and sad. Music is so powerful because it has the ability to speak to us. World Day of Music falls on June 21 and celebrates the great positive impact that music has on all of our lives and encourages us to embrace it. When it comes to my personal musical preference, I’m a fan of many different forms of music. I must admit that I’m not in love with rap music — I just have difficulty understanding it. If I had to choose a favorite artist or song, I don’t think that I’d be able to because there are so many that truly move and inspire me. However, one song that always holds a special place in my heart is the song that I danced to with my husband at our wedding: “At Last,” by Etta James. When I’m cooking in the kitchen, I love to have music playing. Whether it’s Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, or Etta James, having something to dance around the kitchen to is so enjoyable and lifts my mood. I also enjoy pop music. I recently saw Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga perform together in concert and it was such a great
combination of old school and more modern music. It was a great time! I have my fun list of upbeat songs that I love to work out to. The best thing about music is that it serves us in so many ways. If we are down, music can sympathize or uplift us. If we are feeling anxious, relaxing music can help to soothe us. If we have a big event coming up, certain songs can be extremely motivational. As I mentioned earlier, certain songs can also take us back in time. As a child of the 1980s, any time I hear Prince, I’m taken back to my high school days!
THE BEST THING ABOUT MUSIC IS THAT IT SERVES US IN SO MANY WAYS.”
I truly love music and the power it has to impact our lives. What are your favorite songs and genres?

Did you know that if you aren’t using the right bulbs or even the right fixtures to light your home, you could be negatively affecting our environment? Believe it or not, major changes really aren’t necessary to make your home more energy-efficient, especially when it comes to lighting. Every household in America can make a few small adjustments that can have a big impact on the environment as well as your finances. If you want eco-friendly ways to light your house, try out the following ideas. Switch out your lightbulbs. Did you know that the standard incandescent bulb only puts out 5%–10% of the energy it converts as light? The rest goes out as heat. If you’re still using traditional lightbulbs, it’s time to upgrade. Compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) cost a little bit more but last for 10,000 hours. CFLs use a fraction of the energy that traditional bulbs use but are often much brighter and safer. You can also make the switch to LED bulbs, which reduce energy consumption by 80%–90% while also lasting for 100,000 hours. Whatever option you choose, dispose of your old bulbs properly. Every city has different stipulations for recycling, so learn how to dispose of them before you recycle. LIGHT YOUR HOME THE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY WAY
across America. They’re extremely convenient, especially if your home lacks a sufficient number of outlets. While some power strips turn off when not in use, others consistently pull energy when they’re plugged in. Save energy by unplugging any power strips when not actively in use. Additionally, try and keep your lights off when you’re not home or actively using a room. It doesn’t make sense to keep your lights on when nobody is in the room. If the sun is shining, make use of that sunlight to light your house. You don’t need to depend on electricity for light during the spring and summer months so much. Just open your windows!
Unplug your power strips and keep your lights off. The power strip is one of the most commonly used items in households

WHY IS PERMANENT WEIGHT LOSS SO HARD?
SPOILER: YOUR BODY IS SCARED OF IT
Losing weight is hard — and not just because creating new diet and exercise habits is difficult. The truth is that you’re working against your body’s natural instincts, which is to preserve weight. In other words, even when weight loss is the healthiest thing you can do for your body, physiologically, your body rarely realizes that. How does weight loss work? Complex interactions between hormones and neurons in your hypothalamus control how much you weigh. Your hypothalamus controls your thirst, hunger, and body temperature. The chemicals that interact with the hypothalamus therefore influence your appetite and how much food you eat. In particular, fat cells in your body produce the hormone leptin, which then tells your body when you’ve stored enough fat, thus decreasing your appetite.
A popular, effective way to think of weight loss is “calories in, calories out” (CICN). You want more calories going out than coming in because this helps sustain a caloric deficit which can assist in losing weight. However, not all calories affect your hormones the same way, and being overweight to begin with can interfere with the body’s ability to regulate an appropriate appetite. So, how do I lose weight — for good? Even after following a new diet and exercise regimen, most people are likely to regain about 30%–35% of the weight they’ve lost after one year. After sacrificing those potato chips for sugar snap peas, this is frustrating! But we promise that some changes do help maintain permanent weight loss, including replacing processed foods in your diet. As just one example, according to the Journal of Clinical Investigation, a diet with added fructose (high-fructose corn syrup) is linked to insulin resistance, increased blood sugar levels, and higher triglyceride and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels — but if you replace fructose with regular sugars and glucose, the risk is noticeably less. That said, fruit with natural fructose does not appear to carry the same risks as added fructose. Our bodies are complex machines. Many factors beyond diet (genetics, medical comorbidities, long-standing diabetes, stress, sleep, etc.) can affect your ability to lose weight. The best path to a healthier weight is to move more and find multiple ways to live a healthier life, one small step at a time.

DO YOU WANT TO MOVE BETTER WITH LESS PAIN? DO YOU WANT TO IMPROVE YOUR BALANCE AND STRENGTH WHILE HAVING FUN? TRY AQUATIC THERAPY
CONTINUED ON BACK ... Aquatic therapy can benefit both the mind and body. Because the environment allows for all levels of training, aquatic therapy is beneficial for the armchair to elite athlete. Research has shown aquatic therapy to be safe and effective in treating the following conditions: • Post-ACL reconstruction • Sports injuries • Arthritis • Pre- and post-joint replacement • Back pain • Neurological injury/ WHAT IS AQUATIC THERAPY? Simply put, aquatic therapy involves hands-on techniques and specific body movements designed, instructed, and supervised by a physical therapist who specializes in aquatic therapy. Your treatment and movement plan is tailored to your specific needs and goals. WHO BENEFITS FROM AQUATIC PHYSICAL THERAPY? Combining the natural properties of water, such as buoyancy and drag force, with body movement, you have a winning exercise and physical therapy solution. The magic starts with the unique properties of water. The upward lift of buoyancy reduces stress on the joints, allowing you to move with less pain and effort, increasing your mobility. The drag force of water provides a gentle but effective resistance, allowing you to gain strength and endurance. Finally, water’s hydrostatic pressure promotes circulation in the tissues, which reduces swelling and promotes metabolic waste removal and overall increased blood flow to the muscles, crucial for recovery. conditions (stroke, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury) • Balance problems
... continued from Front
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT OUR AQUATIC THERAPY PROGRAM: IT ALWAYS HURTS TO EXERCISE; WHY SHOULD I TRY IT NOW? A. The upward force of buoyancy supports the body, reduces weight- bearing and compressive forces, and in turn reduces pain while still allowing you to exercise. WHAT IF I AM TOO WEAK TO EXERCISE? A. Buoyancy also provides support, assisting the muscles with movement. Once stronger, the water provides resistance, creating a progressive exercise program that allows you to build strength with the goal of eventually increasing your function on land. I CAN’T SWIM, IS IT SAFE? A. Yes. We use floatation equipment in deep water and/or shallow-water exercise as needed. The therapist provides individual attention, working one-on-one with you, not in a group. Many of the aquatic exercises are done in the vertical position with the head out of the water. I AM AN ATHLETE; ISN’T WATER EXERCISE FOR OLDER, LESS FIT PEOPLE? A. No. When designed to meet your specific level of fitness, the aquatic environment can challenge even the highest-performing athlete. By adding drag force equipment, any athlete can build muscle strength and endurance. With water plyometrics
and jump training, the athlete can improve sports performance with less muscle soreness compared to traditional land programs. Finally the hydrostatic pressure allows for faster metabolic waste removal and a great place for recovery after high- intensity workouts or competition. WANT TO KNOW
