MIYC Extended Cruise Key West & Faro Blanco

Belle was a special treat, followed by an exceptional meal at the Lighthouse Grill. During the day, a small group went to the Dolphin Research Center and swam with the dolphins. Sandy Wallen scouted the Artists’ Colony for fun ideas for the MIYC Ship’s Store, and Aquafit in the pool drew many. We departed on a calm and sunny day with amazing visibility. As usual, the weather improved as we approached Marco! All in all, it was good times with good friends—it doesn’t get any better than this! (See more photos on pg. 2)

By Peggy Frazier A group of 26 MIYC Members departed Marco Island on November 1st, headed for Key West, Galleon Marina. Led by Jim and Linda Marr’s Blue Moon, the fleet departed in rough and challenging seas. Seafari II, Good Juju, Liquid Assets and Kentucky Belle successfully completed the trip along

with Blue Moon. Some boats turned back, but their crews came by car to join the fun. We gathered for c o c k t a i l s o n Membe r s ’ boa t s followed by meals at wo n d e r f u l l o c a l s p o t s l i k e t h e Commodore’s Club and the Rooftop Cafe. Some slept on their boats, others opted for the Marker Resort close by.

We worked off the extra calories with Aquafit at the Marker’s pool. We also toured historic places like Hemingway’s house and museum. Some went fishing, and we all enjoyed the catch prepared as appetizers at dinner. Next, our adventure moved on to the Faro Blanco Resort in Marathon. A cocktail party onboard Kentucky

Southern Dining with Chef Bob at the Piano The Southern 'Fine' dining on November 17 was a real hit with the Members. The menu reflected the

'Foods of Charleston, New Orleans and South Carolina.' From jambalaya to baked oysters, fried catfish and bourbon pecan pie, no one left without a grin on their face. The evening opened with Henry Stanley, a fine Southern gentleman, sharing his memories growing up in the South and the outstanding cuisine. Other southern Members including Mimi and Frank Conner, Mary and Jay Hughes, Linda Spell and Dale DeFeo sharing their memories as well. Chef Bob and son Robert sang together with Chef at the piano. Chef shared with the Members the fact that he taught himself to play when he saw the grand piano. He led us in a rousing ''Walkin' to New Orleans'. Last but not least, a photo of the southern folk was taken as a reminder of our fun event.

Italian Feast with Joey Fiato The Italian Feast held on November 24 was everything a trip to Italy could be....mounds of Ossabucco and Lasagna as well as chicken piccata, and seafood crostini. To add to the authenticity, Joey Fiato, a well-known Southwest Florida entertainer, sang and entertained with versions of Sinatra and Bruce Springsteen. He even

threw in a bit of Bruno Mars. The dancing was enjoyed by all, even Belle Leunig did a kick line with the gang to 'New York New York'. John Basic was cutting the rug with Kim Porter, and Henry Stanley held nothing back on the dance floor. And new members, Melanie and Bruce Kraemer and Joan and Gerry Gorman showed us some major dance moves. In all..bravissimo !

Member Events By Angela Holt

November started off with a very special Friday Evening Colors dedicated to recognizing Jimy Fernandez and his wife Paula and daughter Sarah. Jimy is a long time server at MIYC who became a citizen two years ago. He has worked long and hard to bring his family to the USA from Colombia. They arrived earlier this year and during Colors we welcomed his family and commended him. The Annual Meeting and election of the Board of Directors was followed by Happy Hour, hors d'oeuvres and Dancing Under The Stars. Nevada Smith entertained Members in his own inimitable way. The Members enjoyed a true Southern Dinner with a focus on the foods of Nashville, South Carolina and New Orleans. That evening, Chef Bob entertained Members by singing and playing the grand piano. A passing of the hat garnered a nice sum for the purchase of presents for Toys for Tots. Thanksgiving is always a feast at the MIYC. This year was no exception. The weekend was filled with fun.

Italian Night on Saturday. Joey Fiato brought the music to complement the Italian Buffet. The month was filled with fun . . . Day Cruises, Sunset Cruises, a special Book Club speaker and cocktail reception; and finally our 'Deck the Halls ' event where the Club is transformed into

Commodore

Over the past few months, MIYC has added many new Members who are bringing new enthusiasm to the Club as they engage in the Club’s many activities; including the Key West Extended Cruise, one of MIYC’s signature events. Thanks to Jim & Linda Marr for the navigational and Pete & Peggy Frazier for the social and ground transportation participation. Your Bridge and Boating Committee have been very busy planning more Cruises and boating events for every month of the season. We invite your participation as Captains, crew or land cruisers. December thru March are the busiest months of the year at MIYC. My favorite event is the Commodore’s Ball and Change of Watch on Saturday, January 19, 2019. Be sure you make your reservations early for on one of the best parties of the year. You can find the invitation and menu in this Anchor lines.

Bob Winterhalter Commodore

It has been a pleasure to serve as your Commodore this past year. As my term expires 12/31/2018, I want to take this opportunity to say how much I have enjoyed planning and participating in the many Bridge events that occurred last year including The Blessing of the Fleet, Wear It Campaign, Day, Sunset, & Extended Cruises and the many emotional Color ceremonies. Diana and I attended all the local Change of Watch ceremonies where we developed friendships with other area Commodores and Commanders, learning the ways they organize events to enhance our Member experiences here at the Marco Island Yacht Club. Many thanks to all the Members of this year’s Bridge as they were a big part of making 2018 a grand year of

boating events at the Club. Bob Winterhalter - Commodore

Chairman’s Report

Dear MIYC Member, I thought it might be beneficial to provide a summary of the 13 November Annual Membership Meeting for those of you that were not able to attend. Though based on the attendance numbers this year, there were not many who were not present! As in past years, a meeting exclusively for Equ i t y Membe r s p r eceded t he Annua l Membership Meeting. The attendance numbers were close to a record! There were 67 individuals at the Equity Members Meeting, and 104 individuals attended the Annual Membership Meeting. It was great to see so many of our members in attendance…and interested in the progress we are making. Of course, Happy Hour following the meeting, dinner and entertainment by Nevada Smith after dinner may have had some impact on attendance! As you recall, we hold the Annual Membership Meeting for three reasons. First, we hold a vote to elect two individuals to the open Board seats. And we conduct any other business that should come before a meeting of the membership. Second, we provide a report on the past year’s performance and activities at the Club. And third, we answer questions Members may have about the Club. To open the meeting, we require a quorum . Our bylaws define a quorum as 50% plus 1 of the active voting members. Members can provide a proxy to the Board if they will not be in attendance. This year, we had 85 voting memberships present. That represents 68.5% of the voting memberships – which is certainly a record in recent years! Of the 85 voting memberships 32 were via proxy and 53 were in attendance. All in all – a great turnout! Thank you to all of you who participated via proxy or in person. The membership approved recommended minor changes to the Bylaws. The revised Bylaws are posted to the Member side of the website in the Key Documents section. And, the membership elected two Members to the Board seats that will be open as of 1 January 2019. This year, six individuals vied for the two open seats.

We provided an online forum for Members to put q u e s t i o n s t o t h e candidates, and each candidate had 2 minutes to make comments at the A n n u a l M e m b e r s h i p Meeting. The membership voted to seat Bob DeFeo and Bill Wallen to the two open positions. Bob and

Dave Everitt Chairman

Bill will hold these seats for a term of three years. In addition, the Bridge nominated Geoff Walker as the incoming Rear Commodore. Geoff will join the Board for a three-year term in January, holding one of the three Board seats reserved for the Bridge. Congratulations to Bob, Bill and Geoff! I also want to thank the other four Members who ran for the open Board seats. Lisa Boyce, David Caruso, Ray Rosenberg and Bob Winterhalter all were well qualified to sit on the Board. Please join me in extending the Club’s appreciation to all seven individuals for their willingness to participate in the process this year! The membership also received a substantive report summarizing activities and progress made at your Club during fiscal 2018. Committee Chairs and the Commodore of the Bridge reported on various initiatives, activities, and plans for the coming year. The presentation slides are available on the Member side of the website under Key Documents. Finally, let me say that it has been a privilege to serve as your Board’s Chairman for this past year. Your Board has worked collaboratively addressing a number of issues during 2018. In addition to the recovery from Hurricane Irma, we were able to refinance the Club’s debt with favorable terms. We continued to develop our strategic planning efforts and strengthened our relationship with MIMA. And, we ended the year with a positive operating profit. I hope you will agree with me that the future of the

Club is very bright, indeed! Dave Everitt - Chairman

MIYC Membership

Here’s what’s new with us in the month of November and what is happening in December! Who wants to join the Membership Committee? We’re so active that we can’t keep up! Normally, we end our column with…if you’d like to join the Membership Committee…blah, blah, blah…well, we’re so busy that I’m putting it first this month in the column! You don’t have to be a Member of the committee to help us! Throughout this column I will tell you how you can help YOUR CLUB! (My cohort in crime, Kathy Caruso, is hoping to leave Miami tonight on a cruise to the Panama Canal with other Club members…I’m at 36,000 feet bouncing all over above Atlanta trying to type!) New Member Recruiting Member Program First, our Member Recruiting Member Program went through a rebirth at the November Membership Committee Meeting AND then it was approved by the Board of Directors on November 13! Our Members who recruited Members told us that they didn’t do it for a reward; they told us that they did it because they love THEIR CLUB! So, instead of waiting a year to see if the referred Member rejoins the Club, NOW, if you refer/sponsor a Member, the recruiting Member and the new Member will receive a dinner for four with a bottle of house wine (4 glasses of house wine) Wed/Thurs/Sat OR Sunday Brunch with sparkling wine-mimosas! We want you to have a welcoming dining experience and Chef wants to be able to come out to the table, ergo…no Friday nights for this welcoming dinner! Pineapple Table: Who Would like to Host? Next, here is an opportunity as a Member to have some fun-Host the Pineapple Table on a Friday Evening! Choose another couple who you know then select Members you’d like to know better and some new Members to complete a table of 8 for a Friday evening. Just let Vicki Bretthauer vickib777@sbcglobal.net what Friday evening you would like to host the table and she will send you a Member contact list so that you can decide who to invite. It is recommended that you work AT LEAST two weeks before the date you would like to host the table. You know how quickly everyone’s social calendars fill around here! Henry Stanley donated a beautiful glass pineapple that we use as a centerpiece on the table. Remember the Pineapple means Welcome! Friday Happy Hour Hosts for Potential Members If you don’t want to host the table we ALWAYS need Members to help us give tours and to introduce prospective members to other Members. Call Cynthia Hultquist on 239-394-0199 x303 if you would like to be a Friday evening host. Trial Memberships: Chamber of Commerce, Realtor Members, Walker Marine, MIMA, Donations You will start to really see lots of red nametags! Those tags mean that these Members are Trial Members. They could

come from many different areas. Kathy Caruso mails all new homeowners with a note to visit our Club on a Friday evening. Our Members who are realtors are allowed to invite their clients to have a trial membership with our Club. We work in conjunction with our Members from Walkers Marine to have new boat owners receive a trial membership from our Club. We have a trial membership with MIMA slip owners and renters to see if they would like to join our Club. Finally, we support our community, especially service and marine organizations by donating three-month trial memberships to their fundraisers! The Marco Patriots will be raffling off a Three-Month Trial MIYC Membership at the Boat Parade! The best part of our column is welcoming our new Members! New Members! They’re banging down the doors to get in! Hal Schultz was referred to our Club by Karena DeWitt! He was able to join us for our Annual Meeting! Jill and Scott Kiley joined us Nov 2 and I don’t know if they have missed an event! They are now full-time residents of Marco and can keep an eye on the Club as they live across the canal on Martinique! They came to us from Illinois via many places, most recently Lake Geneva WI. Susan and Gary Hieftje , summer Members, joined us full- time as Social Members in mid-November. I think they’ve signed up for all of our December Events! Hieftjes were introduced to the Club by the Bretthauers! Gerry and Joan Gorman are new Social members. They know how much fun yacht clubs can be as they have been members of a Club in Rhode Island. Karena DeWitt referred them to our Club and they enjoyed dancing to Joey Fiato at Italian Night! Bruce Batzer and Diane Pogatchnik tried us out when they bought a new boat from Walker Marine and decide that they would like to join us as Full Members! We knew they would join us because they immediately bought lots of items from the Ship’s Store on their first visit. They were hooked! Welcome Aboard to all! Please remember to wear your nametags to the Club as we have many new Members between Early Birds, Trial Members and new Members this Fall AND it so helps the Staff! With hope, Kathy and the rest of the crowd are having smooth sailing! We’ll see you at all the fun events in December! Thanks to Ellie Everitt and her team of volunteers who decorated the Club! What is Family Church Food Pantry? Family Church Food Pantry is a ministry run by the Family Church on Marco Island to serve those who live and work on Marco Island, Goodland, and Isles of Capri and East Naples. We are a non-profit and all volunteer ministry, supported by 10 of the local churches and several community organizations. We are the only Food Pantry between Everglades City and mid-town Naples, and opened in January 2016. Mission: Family Church Food Pantry exists to share the love of Christ by reducing hunger and building relationships in our community. Our goal is to offer nourishing food choices, encouragement, and hope. Why is a food pantry needed in the Greater Marco Island area? Locally we have 41% of our elementary children in a free or subsidized breakfast and lunch program and weekend food. But not everyone struggling with hunger qualifies for federal nutrition assistance. On Marco Island, when the "season" comes to a close many jobs go away or reduce their staff work hours so we have the working low income. Seniors, who are often struggling with health issues on a fixed income, are at risk. When school is out for the summer, children no longer receive subsidized food. Many of our families must choose between paying for rent, utilities, medicine, or groceries. These all contribute to the food-insecure — those who may not know where their next meal is coming from. Family Church offers a "hand up" while maintaining confidentiality and dignity. It is about meeting people in their need and walking alongside them. Additionally, on 9/10/17 the eye of Hurricane Irma hit Marco Island causing much destruction and loss of jobs, resulting in a need for even more Benevolence support. This need continues throughout 2018. When is the Food Pantry open or how can I get in touch? The Food Pantry is open on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month from10am to noon, or by appointment. Appointments can only be made when volunteers are present and will consist of pre-packaged bags of food instead of the choice shopping provided during normal hours. The Food Pantry is located at and managed by the Family Church, 1450 Winterberry Drive, Marco Island, Florida, 34145 in the small Annex Building between the ball park and the Family Church. Telephone: 239-394-1646, x225

Bob Aylwin - Manager/Executive Chef

The Holiday Season is upon us, so once again I find myself poring over my old Christmas recipes and the memories associated with them. There just wasn’t enough of those great family Christmas dinners where 30 or so family members ran around my Grandmother’s house in a perfect orchestration of Italian/Irish cuisine, lots of cold beverages and even dancing, but I am surely thankful for the ones we did have. Being one of the oldest kids meant I was allowed to toil along with Gram and my mother as they went about the business of making their Christmas culinary delights from Gram’s modest little kitchen. I’ve always loved the kitchen and wanted to be there. I can still smell apple cider steaming on her stove and can remember the delight I got when she asked me to drop a little candy cane into it for that pepperminty touch that she loved so. I can still see the ham glistening with brown sugar, corn syrup and toasty little cloves. I can see my mother mashing sweet potatoes with honey and butter as the sweet aroma of nutmeg, cinnamon and pure happiness filled the kitchen air. Every now and again one of these special ladies would call for me to either grab a couple of eggs from the refrigerator or to pass them the eggnog, and I felt a part of their culinary team. Later, Mom and Gram would sit down in her living room and rest a bit as Christmas music flowed through the house. We, the little kitchen helpers, would go outside to play. Family members would be arriving soon, and we would all be pinched and hugged endlessly by relatives and friends whom we didn’t see much of throughout the year. Gram would insist that we line up at the front door as greeters, smiling and saying “Merry Christmas” to all of our arriving guests, a tradition I suspect, as old as the sugar cookie itself. Later, cousins would break up into age groups and find their way to designated tables where a wonderful feast awaited. Some of the older kids would sneak off with a couple of beers before dinner! (I can disclose this now.) There was a lot of love there at Gram’s house. For the brief moment called Christmas, we all looked at each other and agreed it was there. Mom would give

out instructions to her new, older and more experienced kitchen helpers. Aunt Barbara would grab the apricot stuffing, G r a m w o u l d g r a b t h e homemade cranberry sauce and Uncle Sluggo would get his cutting board ready for carving the turkey and the glazed ham. A culinary professional in the making, I would watch and learn. And like a symphony in perfect harmony, our Christmas buffet would come together and we would laugh and eat until our bellies were ready to burst.

Bob Aylwin Manager/Executive Chef

I love Christmas and all that comes with it-the lights, the songs, the presents, the great food and drink-all of it. I’m thankful that my parents and family taught me that Christmas is not about presents, candy canes or money, but about thanks and love. I pay little attention to the commercialized version of the Christmas holiday and feel sad when I see people rushing around in a panic trying to make everything perfect. Nothing is perfect in our world, but I’m fairly certain, if we let our troubles subside and open our hearts to the love of Christmas, that love is all around us. We can all have a close to perfect Christmas and may even help others less fortunate to have a great one as well. Christmas dinners are much smaller these days and many of my loved ones have passed on, but I carry on the Aylwin Christmas spirit with my family and loved ones just as I was taught so many years ago. Special thanks go to all the members who decorated our Club for the Holiday season. Wow! The Club looks fantastic! We will be open on Christmas Eve so we can celebrate with you, but we will be closed Christmas Day so we can make more memories with our family and friends. Happy Holidays from the Food and Beverage team. Chef Bob

Our visitors from other Florida Council of Yacht Clubs have dropped off some, no doubt due to the Holidays. However, “Amour” from the St. Pete YC will be coming on Dec. 23 rd and spending Christmas Eve with us before heading to Key West for Christmas. They are then staying again on the 29 th on their way back to St. Petersburg. The maximum boating

The Marina is ready for the new season. The landscaping has been spruced up and the front wall is being pressure washed. The docks have been pressure washed, benches and picnic tables repaired and painted, and the grills re-conditioned. The Marina facilities are available for MIYC Members to use; however, please refrain from walking the docks for “boat watching” as these are the private property of the slip-owners and their privacy should be respected. MIYC Members are also welcome to come for lunch at the Club by boat. Even though the Marina is quite full, there is often space available for a couple of hours during the day. Please be sure to call Nancy or Richard at the Dockmaster’s office (239-642-2531) in advance to be sure that there will be space. Not every empty slip can be used as some boats are only out for a few hours. Richard, the Dockmaster, will greet you when you arrive and assist you in docking. This is

season will kick off in January when all of our residents will be back from up North, and the snowbirds will be coming down to enjoy our weather and boating. Our seasonal lessees are also starting to come back; and with that the Marina’s slips are filling up fast. At the present time, it looks like our Marina will only have about 6 or 7 slips available for transients. So even though the number of people taking boating trips will be increasing, we won’t be able to accommodate as many.
