Projects & Competitions
Students at our campuses, including undergrads, collaborate in research and compete in prestigious national and international competitions, earning a long list of accolades: Daytona Beach and Prescott Collaborative Research Projects s OPTIMIS: Optimizing Human Performance in the Air Transportation Sector by Integrating Human Factors into Homeland Security Deterrence and Detection Procedures and Training: System Interfaces and Behavioral Screening at Security Checkpoints. The project takes a systemic approach in identifying behavioral risk vulnerabilities of airport security screening checkpoints associated with human error in order to: (a) close effectiveness and efficiency gaps in user interaction with systemic elements and (b) enhance human reliability as a measure to improve overall system performance and hence air transportation security. This project involves four undergraduate research students and five faculty from across the three campuses. College of Engineering Daytona Beach, College of Arts and Sciences Prescott and Worldwide Creating Connections s Bed Bugs to UAV Swarms — Modern aerospace systems need a new approach for swarm consensus that is distributed, operates with local knowledge and uses simple agents. The overarching goal of the research is to advance our understanding of bed bug behavior and use this understanding to improve performance of aerospace swarms. This project involves five undergraduate research students and three faculty from across the three campuses. Collaborative and Dual Campus Team Competitions s 27th Annual AIAA Design Build Fly — Teams from both Daytona Beach and Prescott participated in the 2023 competition. The mission for 2023 was to design, build and test an aircraft to execute electronic warfare (EW) missions. Flight missions included staging of the aircraft, surveillance and jamming. Daytona Beach placed 3rd and Prescott 7th out of more than 80 teams. s Rocketry — Teams from both Daytona Beach and Prescott will be competing in a variety of different rocketry competitions including a Prescott Capstone Team — Cyngus Suborbitals in the Dollar Per Foot Challenge hosted by the Friends of Amateur Rocketry. s Our flight teams have won the NIFA SAFECON national championship 16 times since 1992, have an unbroken 37-year record as regional champions and have won four recent national championship titles. s Embry-Riddle’s Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) Business Club has won the PBL Arizona Leadership Competition for the past 14 years, this past year earning 55 total awards.

We’ve also partnered with Delta Air Lines and SkyWest on innovative programs aimed at getting aviation students interviews for pilot positions. AEROSPACE PHYSIOLOGY FL The only undergraduate degree of its kind in the nation, this program blends aerospace with life science and leverages Embry-Riddle’s many strengths to take advantage of emerging opportunities in space and biomedicine. Students study how extreme environments influence biological systems, including such things as the impacts of microgravity and radiation. The extensive curriculum prepares them for a variety of opportunities not only in the medical fields but also in research and development to support the aerospace industry’s need for expertise in behavioral neuroscience, stress and fatigue, nutritional biochemistry, pharmacotherapeutics, health and human performance, genomic expression and the human microbiome, among others. Noteworthy: The program is the first undergraduate program of its kind in the nation. APPLIED BIOLOGY AZ This dynamic program, which features 20 hours of open electives, prepares you to pursue a wide range of options, from applying for astronaut training to health sciences, ecology and wildlife science, along with a minor in unmanned aerial systems, human factors psychology or forensic biology. Graduates will have the background and technical skills necessary to apply for admission to graduate/medical school or professional health sciences programs. The Prescott Campus provides an ideal natural laboratory, with nearby ecosystems ranging from desert lowlands to alpine forests, and the 10-year job forecast for biologists shows more growth than any other occupation. Noteworthy: In NASA’s most recent class of astronauts, four of the 12 candidates had a background in biological sciences.
DATA SCIENCE AZ Large employers across all sectors are now recognizing the need for collecting, analyzing and interpreting data in their operations. This has created demand for skilled data scientists in all areas. Graduates of this new degree program will learn the mathematical theory and computing techniques necessary to be successful practitioners in this new field. The program also emphasizes computer programming, data manipulation and an elective domain specialization such as business, cybersecurity, economics or physics. Graduates will be fully prepared to enter careers as Data Scientists, Market Research Analysts and Applied Statisticians, or to pursue advanced degrees.
COMMUNICATION FL ONLINE Aviation, aerospace and business industries require more internal communications specialists, as well as professionals in media and public relations, to relay information clearly and accurately. This program requires you to practice gathering, analyzing and disseminating scientific and technological information. Graduates are skilled in communicating science information to specific and general audiences through a variety of mass media. You’ll be well positioned to work in new and/or converged media — generating blogs, real-time news and audio and video reports for company-run websites or multipurpose online outlets such as Yahoo, Google or social media; or traditional media — such as newspapers, magazines, television and radio. A broadcast meteorology track prepares students for a career as a weather forecaster. Noteworthy: Embry-Riddle students gain valuable experience pitching articles to the media and often see their name in print as freelance authors in national publications.
ASTRONOMY & ASTROPHYSICS FL AZ
You will use your mathematics and physics knowledge to study galactic, extragalactic and cosmological scales that encompass exoplanets, stars and star clusters, galaxies and quasars. You’ll have access to resources such as the SARA consortium with connections to telescopes at Kitt Peak, Arizona, Cerro Tololo, Chile, and Roque de Los Muchachos, La Palma, Spain. Our faculty have connections to major resources like the Hubble Space Telescope and lead research programs supported by NASA and the National Science Foundation. If you pursue graduate studies, you could be an astronomer at a large research university, a national observatory or a planetarium, head right to work in commercial or military satellite operations or become an observatory technician or science journalist. ENGINEERING PHYSICS FL Embry-Riddle’s Engineering Physics program is one of the largest of its kind in the nation and is the only such program to have a strong emphasis on connecting space science with engineering. Engineering Physics is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, abet.org. The university has a very active research program in space sciences and engineering that is federally and commercially funded. You will participate in hands-on field research as well as computational and modeling research. Our students have participated in sounding rocket launches from Alaska and New Mexico, trips to high altitude and latitude optical installations including Chile and Antarctica, space systems engineering and satellite design, control and dynamics of autonomous vehicles and so much more. AIR TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT FL AZ We are one of the leading AT-CTI schools with a curriculum and high-fidelity simulation that prepares students for a career in air traffic management or an aviation/aerospace-related organization.
