Projects & Competitions
Students at our campuses, including undergrads, collaborate in research and compete in prestigious national and international competitions, earning a long list of accolades: Daytona Beach and Prescott Collaborative Research Projects s OPTIMIS: Optimizing Human Performance in the Air Transportation Sector by Integrating Human Factors into Homeland Security Deterrence and Detection Procedures and Training: System Interfaces and Behavioral Screening at Security Checkpoints. The project takes a systemic approach in identifying behavioral risk vulnerabilities of airport security screening checkpoints associated with human error in order to: (a) close effectiveness and efficiency gaps in user interaction with systemic elements and (b) enhance human reliability as a measure to improve overall system performance and hence air transportation security. This project involves four undergraduate research students and five faculty from across the three campuses. College of Engineering Daytona Beach, College of Arts and Sciences Prescott and Worldwide Creating Connections s Bed Bugs to UAV Swarms — Modern aerospace systems need a new approach for swarm consensus that is distributed, operates with local knowledge and uses simple agents. The overarching goal of the research is to advance our understanding of bed bug behavior and use this understanding to improve performance of aerospace swarms. This project involves five undergraduate research students and three faculty from across the three campuses. Collaborative and Dual Campus Team Competitions s 27th Annual AIAA Design Build Fly — Teams from both Daytona Beach and Prescott participated in the 2023 competition. The mission for 2023 was to design, build and test an aircraft to execute electronic warfare (EW) missions. Flight missions included staging of the aircraft, surveillance and jamming. Daytona Beach placed 3rd and Prescott 7th out of more than 80 teams. s Rocketry — Teams from both Daytona Beach and Prescott will be competing in a variety of different rocketry competitions including a Prescott Capstone Team — Cyngus Suborbitals in the Dollar Per Foot Challenge hosted by the Friends of Amateur Rocketry. s Our flight teams have won the NIFA SAFECON national championship 16 times since 1992, have an unbroken 37-year record as regional champions and have won four recent national championship titles. s Embry-Riddle’s Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) Business Club has won the PBL Arizona Leadership Competition for the past 14 years, this past year earning 55 total awards.
