A Century of Community: Elmwood Lawn Bowling Club Celebrates 115 Years of Tradition by Alison Fantillo Nestled in the heart of London’s historic Wortley Village, the Elmwood Lawn Bowling Club stands as a testament to timeless recreation and community spirit. As the club prepares to celebrate its 115th anniversary next year, it continues offering residents of all ages a unique blend of sport, socializing, and wellness. Often described as a “hidden gem” within the village, Elmwood Lawn Bowling Club has been a cornerstone of community recreation since 1911. The well-maintained greens and welcoming clubhouse provide the perfect setting for competitive While lawn bowling might evoke images of a genteel pastime, the sport offers surprising athletic benefits. “It’s a fantastic low-impact exercise that improves flexibility, balance, and coordination,” Club President Roger Pope explains. “Players can easily walk up to two kilometres during a typical game, making it an excellent form of physical activity for all fitness levels.” The mental benefits are equally impressive. Lawn bowling’s strategic nature keeps minds sharp, requiring players to calculate angles, assess weather conditions, and plan several moves ahead. Studies have shown that such engaging activities can help maintain cognitive function and reduce the risk of depression. play and casual enjoyment. More Than Just a Game
A Social Hub Perhaps Elmwood’s most compelling aspect is its vibrant social atmosphere. “We’re more than just a sports club,” says membership coordinator Michael Chen. We’re a community where friendships flourish. Whether you’re 25 or 85, you’ll find welcoming faces and engaging conversation.” The club hosts regular social events, tournaments, and themed bowling nights, making it an ideal venue for both seasoned players and newcomers to the sport. Members often gather in the clubhouse after games to share refreshments and stories, creating lasting bonds beyond the greens. Join the Tradition As Elmwood enters its 115th year in 2026, the club welcomes new members. Free introductory sessions, with all equipment provided, are available throughout the spring and summer months. Experienced members are always on hand to guide beginners through the basics of the game. For those interested in experiencing this blend of sport, social connection, and wellness, Elmwood Lawn Bowling Club offers various membership options to suit different schedules and commitment levels. The club is located at 17.5 Edward Street and you can visit elmwoodlawnbowlingclub.com for more information. “There’s something special about being part of a tradition that spans over a century,” reflects Pope. “We’re not just playing a game; we’re carrying forward a legacy of community, friendship, and active living.”

Neighbour of Note: Seth McNall
As if being a music teacher with TVDSB, a very active freelance trombonist who has worked with several orchestras and theatre companies, numerous pop and rock performers, chamber groups as well as many jazz groups – the Baddist Big Band, Seth McNall Sextet and former Orchestra London to name a few – and being President of the London Musicians Association, and Chair of TVDSB Jazz Night, did not keep Seth McNall busy enough, he has also recently become Director for a new music charity called the London Jazz Association which funds the London Jazz Festival. Seth still made some time to tell us a little more about himself. Seth has, in addition to other credentials, a Jazz Performance Master of Music degree from McGill University, having studied arranging with Joe Sullivan, and Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education degrees from Western University. His interest in music was originally triggered by listening to the music that his family played in the car (radio and 8-track) or in the house. “My grandfather loved dinner music and played everything from symphonies to Louis Armstrong. My family usually played more blues, R&B like Aretha Franklin, and James Brown,” he recalls. Why trombone? “It’s funny because I wanted to play tenor sax like all the blues bands I grew up listening to,” says Seth, but when I went to select an instrument at my school, the other students had already grabbed them. “All that was left was a trombone. I was not impressed but took it home that night and made some typical first sounds (motorbike and toots). I was hooked!” Seth names career highlights to date – “with hopefully more to come – playing with Frank Sinatra Jr. and playing the actual sheet music used on all those classic Sinatra recordings. And I was lucky enough to play the closing night at The Brier Patch in 2023 with some incredible musicians,” he says. Seth is also an amateur brewmeister. “I make my own beer from grain to glass, as they say. I have a lot of fun creating new recipes and adapting techniques and equipment for the homebrewer. I also love relaxing in our backyard with my supportive wife and two kids. I love and listen to everything. My Apple playlist is hilarious. Everything from classical to jazz to rap to country. My daughter is loving Taylor Swift lately so I’ve got into her a bit more lately.” An Old South resident, Seth likes that the village is “self- sufficient with all kinds of shops and restaurants. It’s so
welcoming and it always has community activities going on. It’s the best neighbourhood in London!” Learn more about Seth at www.sethmcnall.com. For more information on the Jazz Society and London Jazz Festival, visit jazzassociationlondon.ca and londonjazzfestival.ca.

To advertise here, please contact Cathy@villagerpublications.com Since plants do not charge for what they have to offer – Welwyn determined that neither would she! “I don’t want to put a dollar value on my ability to help people get over the many ailments that are not being looked after well by our system of modern medicine,” she says. “Since ancient times, plants have given themselves freely to people who needed them for medicine. Often, they were the underprivileged – mothers of more than a dozen children, serfs, laundresses, slaves, factory workers, seamstresses, and others who knew a handful of good plants to turn to for medical help when doctors were few and far between and likely unaffordable. And there were ‘wise women’ Welwyn graduated in less than two years from a three-year diploma course at the Herbal Academy in herbalism, attends lectures and has spent thousands of hours studying plants, deciphering scientific articles and “pouring over enough books on the subject to fill a couple of bookcases”. She spends many hours each week maintaining her own herb garden “so that my clients get herbs that are safe and fresh.” Gaea’s Heart in the Heart of Wortley: Healing with Herbs When Welwyn Katz was eight years old, she helped her mother rebuild a ravine lot that had been ravaged by a home builder who had dumped subsoil down it. “I filled sand pails of clay muck, taking them up the hill and heaping them on a big pile that eventually a truck took away. It took more than a year. A few of the plants came back after the clay was gone, but there were many sad, bare spots. Mom knew we could never make the place right again unless we replanted the same kind of native plants that had been there before. They were not available in stores in those days, and so in our second year at making the ravine beautiful again, we went into the forest together, day after day, and dug up mayflowers and anemones, jack-in-the- pulpits and ferns and wild trilliums, oh my, so many plants! Then we planted them in the ravine. I learned what Mom knew about each plant. They all have healing properties, not safe to use if you don’t know how, but really quite remarkable. I saw then the power of life because by the time I was a teenager, the ravine was as wildly beautiful as it had been before. At the time, it never occurred to me that I might actually become an herbalist. I taught Math at South Secondary and wrote novels for young adults, but my gardens were always the place I breathed more deeply and where my creativity was renewed.” When Welwyn and her husband Greg Yarrow moved into their Askin Street home in January 2011, the property was overgrown with bushes and weeds. That spring, Welwyn started a garden and transformed the basement into a workshop/greenhouse. Having chosen to be car-less, they erected raised beds in the driveway that now grow vegetables. A small fish pond in the back anchors 120 different varieties of healing herbs and the front yard is styled as an English country garden.
and professional men who studied herbs. As payment for their knowledge, people gave what they could: a few carrots, a yard of fabric, an hour’s labour, a future favour. That system is no more, but the need for it is no less.” “My time is my own and my knowledge is my passion. I love working with herbs. When you have a passion for what you do, you can lose the joy of it very quickly if you are forced to try to earn a living at it.” She does ask to be reimbursed for her out-of-pocket expenses, such as for any dried herbs she had to purchase (maybe because they don’t grow in this climate or because her own home-grown stock has run out), alcohol for tinctures, olive oil and beeswax for salves, honey and glycerin for syrups. “That, and the required HST, is all I charge. No markup. No profit. Just, people pay me back, dollar for dollar, for what I have paid for the medicine to help them. Because, really, except for the need in this life to make enough money to pay for basic necessities, everything that matters comes without a price tag – think love, compassion, laughter, courage...” Learn more at gaeas-heart.com
Welwyn’s Sleepy Tea This recipe to help adults fall asleep, is safe for children over age 5, says Welwyn, if you use one-third of the quantity of each herb. 1.5 tsp skullcap leaves and flowers; 1.5 tsp passionflower leaves and flowers; 1.5 tsp chamomile flowers; all cut up. Put in a large tea ball or strainer in a cup. Pour boiling water over. Cover. Let steep for 15 minutes. Add sweetener to taste. Drink half an hour before bed.

Our Coves Story On February 22nd, artist Reilly Knowles led a program called Our Coves Story at Landon Branch Library where community members were invited to share their stories of living, working and playing in the Coves. Coves neighbours of today and yesterday offered their colourful histories and observations, illustrated by personal photos and artifacts. Twenty-three participants visited the drop-in program throughout the afternoon, with many more submitting their reflections electronically before and afterwards. Our Coves Story was the first free, public program of 2025 organized by the Coves Collective, an ad-hoc group of artists, educators, and activists that have come together to attend to their responsibilities and relationships with the Coves, an Environmentally Significant Area in the middle of London. As a project of the Coves Collective, Our Coves Story brought people together through their love of the Coves neighbourhood, and provided insight into the community’s relationship to this place in order to inform the collective’s future work. As an extension of the program, Reilly is continuing to collect stories, photos and artworks of the Coves for a small publication which will be offered back to participants for free as a gesture of community-building. No submission is too “small”! Anything that speaks to your relationship to the Coves is welcome. Visit reillyknowles.ca/ourcovesstory, or email Reilly directly at reillycknowles@gmail.com to learn more and to submit material, To learn about future Coves Collective events, follow the group on Instagram @the_coves_collective.
Our Coves Story was supported by the London Arts Council through the City of London’s Community Arts Investment Program, and in collaboration with the London Public Library. His medical history also included a practice in men’s health and work as a family physician. With popped collars on his Tommy Bahama shirts, Fred is also one of London’s best dressed doctors. Westervelt College inhabited 190 Wortley for many years and when the school vacated the premises, Dr. Fred Sexton decided, “40,000 square feet of space represented an opportunity”. He purchased the building in 1995 to make it a medical facility. Fred tells me, “There was the process of recruiting other physicians to see who would come in, and there was a lot of negotiation to bring in an X-ray, laboratory and pharmacy. It was these kinds of tenants which would make a medical building survive or fall”. And it did succeed as thirteen physicians as well as a physiotherapist quickly occupied the building. Bruce Parker There was a time when 190 Wortley Road, home of our beloved ‘Wortley Roadhouse’, was referred to as ‘The Fred Sexton Building’. So who is Fred Sexton? Though no sign was erected, the building was deemed the ‘Sexton Health Facility’. Looking back, Fred recalls, “I really didn’t need my name on it. Maybe I should have considered calling it the ‘Wortley Medical Clinic’, but I was too busy trying to fill the place to worry about naming it.” Tenant Marty Verweel, who established the Wortley Road- house in 1990, recalls his landlord as “a great guy and when we wanted to install the patio, he was very supportive”.

Matt’s Car Care Tip
COMPLETE VEHICLE CARE 12 Wortley Road (519) 642-3819
Now that spring weather is nally here we all want to get out of our houses and do some exploration. If you are like most of us, you likely haven't been using your car very much these last few months. It is a good idea to keep up with the routine maintenance of your vehicle before hitting the open road for your rst adventure of the spring. Your car may not be due for an oil change based on the elapsed mileage (distance since last oil change), but, if it has been sitting for some time it may be due for it's next service. Make sure to check the condition of all of your tires before your next road trip as well. If you aren't sure if your car requires service give us a call or drop us a line at www.wortleyautoservice.com. Safe Driving, Matt Smith If you haven’t had an oil change in awhile, now is a good time to have that done, along with our comprehensive vehicle inspection that checks the rest of your fluids, filters, lights, and overall health of the vehicle. It’s also a great idea to give your car a thorough wash and clean as it gets the salt off the outside of the car and prevents it from rusting. The winter months can take a toll on the interior of your car as well, so a good thorough cleaning that gets rid of the salt stains will also prolong the life of the car. Here’s a tip to get salt stains from floormats and carpets that we use on our own cars: 1. Make a solution that’s half warm water and half white vinegar. 2. Spray the solution on the salty area. 3. Scrub gently with a brush, just enough to get the salt to the surface of the carpet. 4. Use an old dry towel to absorb the salt and cleaning solution. 5. Repeat entire process until the salt is gone.
