Those fresh, acidic touches helped make such a substantial meal feel surprisingly balanced.
FROM THEIR TABLE TO OURS Kyle “Mick” and Jessica Mickelson established Micks’d Up Kitchen in 2020, but their love of feeding people began with dinner parties and cooking for family and friends. Both are educators, and both still work in schools while building the business around nights, weekends and events. Their approach to barbecue reflects that willingness to keep learning. They study the fundamentals, test recipes, adjust and try again. Everything is cooked exclusively over real wood on traditional offset smokers, with small batches and scratch-made components central to the operation. Their menus change with each service. Familiar barbecue favorites share space with specialty cuts, original sausage recipes and seasonal sides. After trying the Kitchen Sink, I understand the appeal: There is always another combination to look forward to and plenty of reasons to return. For a market lunch, it felt like a chance to sample an entire kitchen’s point of view. There was something familiar to start with, then something unexpected waiting just a few bites away. FIND YOUR NEXT FAVORITE Micks’d Up Kitchen has earned regional recognition for its barbecue and food truck offerings, but what stays with me is the care evident in our meal. Every part of that platter had something to contribute. The meats were the centerpiece, and the sides helped make the whole experience memorable.
