The MRI Wait is Over St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) and the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Foundation (STEGHF) are thrilled to announce the official launch of the community’s first-ever MRI machine. This significant milestone marks a new era in local health care, dramatically enhancing the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities for residents of St. Thomas and Elgin County. The community gathered on October 1st for a ribbon-cutting ceremony, celebrating the arrival of this state-of-the-art MRI machine, which uses powerful magnets and radio waves to produce detailed 3D images of internal organs and structures. This advanced technology allows STEGH’s medical team to diagnose health conditions more accurately, detect diseases earlier, and monitor treatment progress with greater precision. “What an exciting day,” says Karen Davies, President & CEO of STEGH. “Many of us in this room have been waiting years for this day, to be able to say the MRI is here. It’s open. It’s functioning. It is a big deal, and we’re transforming the experience of patients who need health care here. Thousands no longer have to travel outside Elgin County for an MRI.” The MRI machine, which will reduce patient wait times and provide quicker access to diagnostic services, is the cornerstone of the hospital foundation’s Transforming Tomorrow Diagnostic Imaging Campaign. Launched in May 2024, the campaign aims to enhance and expand STEGH’s diagnostic imaging department. Jeff Yurek, Chair of the Transforming Tomorrow Campaign, expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming community support that made this project possible. “It has been an amazing experience to be part of this journey,” Jeff says, “As we’ve raised the funds to support the hospital in building the MRI and the new diagnostic imaging suite that is coming forward. We want to thank the

generosity of all the individuals, community members, businesses, and staff here at STEGH for supporting this campaign.” Yurek also shared an exciting fundraising update: “I’m very happy to announce that we’ve reached 94% of our $8 million goal. We are up to 75% of the $1 million matching FDC Foundation Grant, so with another $250,000, the match will add $500,000 to our campaign, which should take us over the top. The MRI is going to enhance health care in our community so much, with the professional doctors, nurses, technicians, and all the staff here at STEGH.” This is an exciting time for STEGH, as the arrival of the MRI fulfills a long-standing need for the community. Now, with the MRI machine in place, patients can receive the advanced care they need locally. It marks a significant step forward in meeting the community’s healthcare needs.
