Every Evil Genius’ Secret Weapon? A Library Card by Aaron DeVries, Manager of Strategy & Operations, St. Thomas Public Library ‘I want sharks with frickin’ laser beams attached to their heads!’ Dr. Evil may not have gotten his wish, but we at the St. Thomas Public Library have something even better: a laser cutter, and it’s ready to turn your creative ideas into reality — minus the sharks (sorry, Doctor). If you’ve never seen a laser cutter in action, imagine a precision- guided beam of light slicing through wood, acrylic, leather, and more, like butter. It’s not a sci-fi weapon but a powerful tool that can engrave, cut, and shape materials with mind-blowing accuracy. Whether you’re a DIY enthusiast, an artist, or someone who’s always wanted to personalize everything from keychains to intricate wall art, the laser cutter has you covered. Now, before you go imagining epic battles or turning your backyard into a scene from Star Wars, let’s focus on the practical stuff. Our laser cutter may not be suited for world domination, but it’s fantastic for creating personalized gifts, jewelry, signs, and even custom parts for your other DIY projects. Want to etch your name onto a wooden box? Done. Need a custom phone stand? No problem. Dreaming about engraving a photo of Rick Astley onto your water bottle? Weird, but we’re not judging. The beauty of this machine is that you don’t need to be an engineering genius to use it. Library staff are on hand to show you the ropes. With a quick intro session, you’ll be creating custom designs in no time. Plus, we’ve got materials available on hand, so you can experiment and see what works best for your project. We
promise you, once you see that laser beam in action, you’ll feel a little like a mad scientist (but in the best possible way). Have a design in mind but don’t know where to start? No worries! We offer free instructional classes as well as access to design software right here in the library, and our knowledgeable staff will always be on hand to guide you through the process. Whether you’re into intricate mandalas, sleek modern designs, or quirky doodles, there’s no limit to what you can create. So, the next time you’re feeling crafty or just want to try something new, come visit us at St. Thomas Public Library’s Maker Lab, on the lower level. Our laser cutter is ready to bring your ideas to life — no evil mastermind required. For more information, plus access to Library Assistant Kyrstie displays her genius use of the laser to create a beautiful library lightbox.
