MY INSPIRATION Encouraging Self and Patients

When I was in high school I focused on the more athletic classes and clubs such as cross- country, track, and basketball. I was very interested in how to heal and enhance the performance of the human body, and I often wondered what my peers and I could do to return stronger and faster after an injury.

Despite my fascination with this process I never thought about becoming a physical therapist. I knew I wanted to be involved in the health field, but I didn’t know which branch to pursue. When I started college at BYU, I took a few general study classes and went to different colleges trying to find something that suited me. At one point, one of my friends told me I’d be a great physical therapist, and I decided to do some research on the subject. When I looked up the requirements, I remember thinking, “Oh my gosh, these classes sound amazing!” I knew that this degree would be like no other experience I had — it wouldn’t be drudgery to attend class! I signed up for an exercise science degree in a pre physical therapy program that day and never looked back. I then went to graduate school at TWU in Houston. While in school, I had a face-to-face experience with a physical therapist when I hurt my back during a game of basketball. My therapist was an older woman with an incredible curve to her spine. She was so personable, funny, and understanding. She got me motivated in my recovery and excited to pursue my education and career. Seeing and experiencing how she interacted with me, I knew I could do the same for other people, and it solidified my resolve that I was on the right path.

I want to empower my patients to achieve their goals just like my therapist enabled me. Engaging in physical therapy is not passive. It takes commitment. The healing we provide isn’t just for the time being; it gives patients the tools they need to help themselves and to encourage family and friends to live a healthy lifestyle. It reminds me a little of Glinda the Good Witch when she tells Dorothy, “You’ve always had the power, my dear, you just had to learn it for yourself.” I want my patients to know they’ve always had the power in themselves, and with a little encouragement they can see it too. I started working for a few clinics once I graduated. One was a small clinic, but I wasn’t there very long, as it was to close soon. While I looked for a new job, a friend told me they met a woman who had an exceptional clinic and they thought I should apply, so I sent in a resume and soon was taken in for an interview. When I first met Kelly, she was a bundle of energy — bubbly, intelligent, and very organized. After getting to know her, seeing how friendly the other staff members were, and witnessing how smoothly the clinic ran, I knew I wanted to be hired. When I was offered the job I immediately took it, and I’ve been here ever since.

I’ve been with the clinic for 12 1/2 years, and I am the clinic coordinator for the Castle Hills location. The company focuses on quality patient care, and there is a family atmosphere here that I haven’t felt anywhere else. I don’t have any family here in Texas apart from my children, Emma and Noah, so everyone at Premier Rehab has become my work-family. I don’t feel far from home because I have so many loved ones here. Although most of my time is dedicated to my patients and my duties as clinic coordinator, I do enjoy free time. When I have chunks of time away, I like to travel. I’ve taken several archaeological tours in Mexico, where I had an up-close look at the Mayan ruins. I love, love, love exploring. I came alive while traveling through the jungle and climbing the ruins. It’s all so fascinating. My 20-year-old daughter Emma is currently studying archeology at BYU. In a way, I feel like I can grow with her while she’s learning about ancient cultures, and I can’t wait to take her and Noah to Mexico to explore the ruins together. –Lori Day

FAMILY GAME NIGHT

Break the Monotony of Overplayed Board Games!

LASER CHESS A classic game of chess is a great way to spend an evening, and it just got a little more interesting. Laser chess includes all the problem-solving skills a typical chess game offers but with a twist. At the end of each turn, a player fires a small laser beam that bounces off the mirrored chess pieces. If it hits the non-mirrored surface of a piece, that piece is taken by the player. A player wins when the opposing player’s king piece is illuminated. CATAN Welcome to the island of Catan! After a long voyage at sea, the people in your expedition compete against other seafarers in building settlements. Enjoy the 45–90-minute game as you and your family build roads, barter resources, and race for absolute supremacy on Catan. ONE NIGHT WEREWOLF Every night, werewolves prowl around the village, and it’s up to the villagers to find the werewolf once the sun rises — before it’s too late. Each person plays a unique role with different abilities to help find or conceal the werewolf. If the werewolf is caught, the villagers win the game, but if the werewolf manages to escape, the villagers lose.

Family game night is a time when a family can forget about all of life’s

commitments and bond over a good old-fashioned board game. But the old, tattered Monopoly box or worn- out UNO cards can leave something to be desired, and the classics might be getting a little dull.

If you’re tired of playing the same board games over and over, it might be time to start looking for ways to change things up. Here are four tabletop games you might not have heard of that are perfect for spicing up family game night. MYSTERIUM Your family will love delving into this cooperative murder mystery game that is a mixture of Clue and Dixit. You can play as the ghost or as one of the mediums who enters the haunting. The ghost player gives each medium a clue or vision about a potential murderer, and the mediums have to guess which person, room, or weapon was used to murder the ghost player. After each turn, the ghost reveals whether each of the mediums’ guesses are right or not. If all of the mediums succeed in guessing correctly by the seventh in-game hour, they work together to find the true murderer.

Now you can bring some exciting variety into your family game nights. Don’t miss out on these excellent tabletop games, and most importantly, have fun!

VALENTINE’S DAY ACTIVITIES 4 Activities for You and Your Sweetheart

or an afternoon of exploration, a bike ride is the perfect chance to enjoy the outdoors. Check out a new restaurant, enjoy your favorite parts of the city, or bike along scenic routes. ICE SKATING Dallas doesn’t offer the locals much snow, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on all winter activities. Take your partner to your local ice rink for a day of ice skating. Once you’ve had your fun on the ice, the two of you can get hot chocolate to complete that winter feel. INVOLVE YOURSELF IN A FUN RUN Joining a local fun run can offer you that outdoor experience you’re looking for while allowing you to give to a good cause. Sign up with your partner as a team and work together to raise awareness for a charitable cause. With the two of you there to support and encourage each other, it will become one of the best experiences you’ll have as a couple.

Valentine’s Day is a holiday many couples look forward to this month. However, if you’ve been together for more than a few years, going on a traditional movie and dinner date might seem a little dull — especially if that’s what you’ve done every year. You and your sweetheart might be looking to get out of the house for a few hours to enjoy each other’s company, but how can you change things up a bit? HIKING Getting outdoors is a great way to spend the day with your partner, spouse, or sweetheart. Before heading out, discuss whether you’d like to walk along a trail that’s a little challenging or one that’s a bit more straightforward. You can also pick a trail with a beautiful scenic view to bring a romantic touch to the hike. Bring a lunch so the two of you can sit, eat, and enjoy each other’s company. BIKING You don’t need a bicycle built for two to take a bike ride with your partner on Valentine’s Day. Whether you’re headed out for an early start to the day

No matter what you choose to do this Valentine’s Day, spending quality time with your spouse, partner, or sweetheart is what truly matters.

ADDING NUTRIENTS TO YOUR MEALS

The Importance of Green Foods

Being healthy is at the forefront of many Americans’ minds. The nutrients you put into your system are critical to keeping your mind and body healthy. Everyone knows that staying away from junk, fried, and sugary foods is a good start, but knowing what to add to your diet is equally crucial. Leafy greens, such as kale, mizuna, and spinach, are rich in dietary fiber, calcium, potassium, and iron. They also contain vitamins C, K, and E. Adding these greens into your diet can support weight loss and reduce your risk of high blood pressure and heart disease. To make sure you’re eating enough greens, divide your plate up between fruits, vegetables, grains, and meats. Vegetables or fruits should take up half of your plate. One-fourth should be lean proteins, and one-fourth should be whole grains. This guarantees that you’re eating a well-balanced meal and not overloading yourself with large portions of unnecessary calories.

When you eat a well-balanced meal, you provide your body with the right nutrients and the calories it needs. If you’re unsure how many calories you should eat to maintain your current weight, multiply your weight in pounds by 12. If you want to lose weight, start by subtracting 500 calories per week to lose approximately 1 pound per week. You can start adding greens into your diet by adding them as side dishes. For dinner, serve a bowl of steamed broccoli or green beans. Instead of grabbing a burger at lunchtime, pack a leafy green salad topped with protein, such as nuts or chicken. This time of year, soups and stews that contain leafy greens will warm you up. If you don’t enjoy eating greens, hide them in smoothies and juices. The more you eat leafy greens, the more you’ll develop a taste for them. Who knows? Before long, you might find yourself reaching for the broccoli instead of the potato chips when you’re craving a snack!
