Tribal offenses committed in Indian Country are exclusively within the jurisdiction of tribal courts Tribal jurisdiction over all crimes committed by tribal members was exclusive to tribal courts until the passage of the Major Crimes Act Tribal sentencing authority is limited to one year and/or a fine not to exceed $5,000 for any single offense
