Choosing a complete and balanced nutritious diet is a great mode of therapy for healthy pets as well as pets that have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis. Hill’s j/d is a diet specifically formulated for mobility and joint disease. Hill’s also has j/d Metabolic and Mobility which is beneficial for pets who are overweight with osteoarthritis. Key factors in these diets include antioxidants, EPA, L carnitine chondroitin and glucosamine. A few valuable ingredients include carrots, coconut oil, tomato pomace, and flaxseed. These ingredients help to reduce inflammation, increase fat and glucose metabolism, and increase appetite control. Pets who have been recommended j/d or j/d Metabolic and Mobility by their veterinarian have shown significant improvement in rising and play by six weeks and walking by 12 to 24 weeks of strictly being fed this diet. Is your pet showing signs of osteoarthritis? Are you interested in learning more? Our veterinary team will be happy to assist you at Komoka-Kilworth Animal Clinic. Charlie was an African Grey Parrot who passed away in September. Charlie died peacefully, but suddenly, of heart failure due to old age. He was over 38 years old! He had a huge vocabulary with his favourite sayings: “Are you gonna be long? Bye-bye, see you later.” He understood what he was saying and would answer questions such as “Where is Jonathan?” (our son) with “He’s at work!” He imitated kitchen sounds like the beeper on the microwave or dishwasher exactly, so you never Earth Day Old South Clean-up “We had a great crew this year,” reported Margaret Hopkins. “We did Charles Hunt Park and the Green as well as Wortley Road (lots of cigarette butts). Osteoarthritis in Dogs by Sydney, Veterinary Technician. Osteoarthritis (a degenerative joint

disease, in which the tissues in the joint break down over time) affects greater than 20% of dogs over one year of age and is a widely overlooked area in many of our clients’ pets. Signs that your pet may be suffering from osteoarthritis include but are not limited to; hesitation to go up or down stairs, lagging behind or tiring easily during walks, preferring to lie down rather than to stand or sit, stiffness, especially after resting, difficulty getting into or out of the car, whimpering, growling or snapping when touched in affected areas. Risk factors that predispose our pets to osteoarthritis include age, rapid growth, large breed, genetic predisposition, obesity, and trauma. Keeping your pets lean and at an ideal weight can significantly reduce the risk of developing osteoarthritis by 33%!
