Let’s explore which orthotic or prosthetic devices will help you make the most of popular springtime activities. Walking Along Parks and Nature Trails Our community is full of beautiful parks and winding nature trails. Walking is one of the easiest ways to connect with the season, but even short distances can be challenging for those using a prosthetic limb or orthotic support. Fortunately, the right equipment can smooth out your walking gait, which helps reduce fatigue and allows for longer and more comfortable outings. How We Can Help • Shock-absorbing prosthetic feet improve balance and reduce impact on joints. • Dynamic response prosthetic feet store and release energy, helping you walk more naturally over different surfaces (such as unpaved nature trails). • Custom orthotic inserts provide extra support and relieve foot pain for those with conditions like plantar fasciitis or arthritis. Running Through Your Neighborhood Are you looking for a more high-intensity workout than a walk? Although it is more high-impact than walking, several devices allow you to run with proper gait and biomechanics. That way, you can boost your cardiovascular health without risking serious injury. How We Can Help • Running-specific prosthetic blades absorb impact and store energy, creating a more natural running motion. • Knee braces with patella stabilization help reduce pain and provide support for those recovering from injuries. • Custom foot orthotics improve alignment and reduce stress on the knees and hips.
Cycling Over Scenic Routes Cycling is another fabulous, low-impact way to explore the natural beauty of upstate New York. Many people mistakenly assume that limb loss will limit their ability to use a bicycle; however, the right adaptive prosthetic device can make cycling accessible. How We Can Help • Specialized prosthetic cycling legs include specialized knees and feet that allow for fluid pedaling. • Upper-body cycling adapters can help you grip the bike’s handlebars while adjusting for balance differences. Hiking in State Parks and Trails We’re surrounded by hiking options for all skill levels, and a spring hike is a great way to celebrate the re-emergence of plants and animals after the winter. While hiking is certainly more challenging than a stroll in a park, the right device can still make a big difference. Proper support will help you conquer your hike while reducing the risk of strain or injury.
How We Can Help • Microprocessor-controlled prosthetic knees adjust to changes in terrain, offering greater stability on hills and uneven surfaces. • Carbon fiber prosthetic feet offer greater mobility and energy return, helping you navigate different inclines with ease. • Custom hiking orthotics provide cushioning and arch support to prevent strain on the feet and ankles.
