LOOKING FOR DISABILITY SERVICES IN ALABAMA? START WITH ADRS

Did you know that Alabama is one of only two states that house all disability services under one lead state agency? When your child receives a diagnosis, it can be overwhelming trying to figure out which services they are eligible for, but the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services (ADRS) makes it easy: Just call (334) 293-7500. ADRS will assess your family’s needs and refer you to the appropriate program through a care coordinator. “Last year, ADRS served over 72,000 Alabamians through our various programs,” says ADRS Commissioner Jane Elizabeth Burdeshaw. “ADRS continues to meet Alabamians where they are, at any age and stage of life, to empower, educate, and enhance opportunities for individuals with disabilities and the communities in which they live, learn, and work.”

ADRS offers programs across Alabama from birth through adulthood, including Alabama’s Early Intervention System (AEIS) for ages 0–3, medical clinical service through Children’s Rehabilitation Service (CRS) for ages 0–21, vocational resources and assistance, and an independent living and homebound program. Their mission is simple: “Our mission is to enable Alabama’s children and adults with disabilities to achieve their maximum potential.” ADRS is continually seeking ways to better equip Alabamians with the tools and resources they need—and their latest project is telehealth carts. Keep an eye out for Children’s Rehabilitation Service (CRS) telehealth carts, which will provide services to families of children with complex medical needs who are not able to travel to in-person therapeutic clinics. NEW HOOVER COFFEE SHOP COPPER STAR COFFEE CO. BRINGS EUROPEAN-INSPIRED EATS TO BIRMINGHAM Hoover just got a little slice of Europe: Tucked away right off Montgomery Highway down the street from the Riverchase Galleria, you’ll find a charming new coffee shop called Copper Star Coffee Co. Whether you’re wanting free drip, an espresso, or cold brew, they’ve got it all. You can even order a decaf Americano by request. But what makes this coffee shop so special is their food menu, featuring everything from paninis and smoothies to waffles and ice cream. Their paninis, including the Tillamook Grilled Cheese, Chicken Pesto, and the classic Turkey & Provolone, are all served hot on freshly baked ciabatta bread, and they slice their meat themselves, “as close to paper thin as the machine will go,” according to a post on social media. Their soup of the day is perfect for cooler days, but you can never go wrong with a fruit smoothie… although they use Tillamook ice cream in their sundaes, so you might want to just skip to dessert. Then again, the shining star just might be the Belgian waffles, made fresh daily. They’re open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday–Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays. Their bio says it all: “Open doors, good coffee, blues on the speakers. Still refining. Always welcoming.” Stop by to try it out for yourself at 1870 Chace Dr., Suite 150, Hoover, or give them a call at (205) 201-4021 to learn more.
