MAY 18, 1941 / BROADEN ING CHRISTIAN HOR IZONS : SAUL ’S CONVERSION A cts 9:1-31 ’ ,

Acts 9:1 And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the dis- eiples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, 2 And desired of him letters to Damas cus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem. 3 An$ as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: . 4 And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why perseentest thou me? 5 And he said. Who art thou, Lord! And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. 6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go Into the city, and It shall' he told thee what thou must do. . ' . „ ,, 7 And the men wjiich journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man. N 8 And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: , but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus. 9 And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink. 10 And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here. Lord. 11 And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight,- and inquire in the house of Jndas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, be hold, he prayeth, 12 And hath seen In a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and patting his hand on him, that he ^mlght receive his sight. 18 Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jeru- saiem: 14 And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name. 15 But the Lord said unto him. Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel: 16 For I will show him how great things he must suffer for my name’s sake. LESSON TEXT: Acts 9:1-16. GOLDEN TEXT: “ I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision” (Acts. 26:19). DEVOTIONAL READING: Isa. 6:1-8. Outline and Exposition I. T he O bject of G race (1, 2) r ’T 'SHE RECORD concerning the con- ' I version of Saul reveals what JL grace can do, and what the law cannot do. It shows how far a sinner can go down and still be saved, and how far up,a self-righteous person can go and still be lost. To use the apostle’s own words: Before God, he had been the chief of sinners (1 Tim. 1:15) and hence lost. Before man, Saul was the chief of legalists and blameless, yet he was lost. Hence the gospel of grace has two calls: To the sinner in the mire it says, “Come up” ; to the self-righteous man it says, “ Come down” ; both meet at the cross of Christ and find themselves equally in need of the Saviour.

Saul of Tarsus was a leader in the Jewish nation in its expression of blind ness, unbelief, wickedness, and hatred against God. As he went on the road to Damascus* he had no sense of personal sinfulness, no seuse of need for a per sonal Saviour, and certainly no sense- of any obligation to the crucified Jesus of Nazareth. He was not a repentant sinner seeking k nercy, but a desperate enemy breathing out threatening and slaughter against all who followed the Lord Jesus. / Saul had a zeal for God; he was blameless before the law; he had real sincerity and much religion. But in reality he was set against the God he professed to/worship. His sincerity was his greatest hindrance to his salvation. And his religion was the worst thing about him. These attitudes isstied in his being a blasphemer, a persecutor, and injurious (cf. 1 Tim. 1.13-16). Only grace could avail for such a man as Saul of Tarsus. n . T he M anifestation of G race (3-9) When Saul “heard a voice” as he journeyed toward Damascus, he listened to no harsh words as from a judge, but to words of tenderness and forgiveness from ,the Saviour and Lord. His conver sion had in it the elements common to every true conversion. It was decisive, an arrest that was unexpected. It was illuminating, revealing that the Man who had been crucified was risen and ascended into heaven, and moreover was one with His own who were upon the earth, to such an extent that those who touched His own on earth virtually touched Him who is in heaven. It was mysterious — a mystery beyond all human ingenuity to explain. There were also some unique elements in Saul’s conversion, and these should not be overlooked. This passage, when compared with 1 Corinthians 15:8 and 1 Timothy 1:15, 16, clearly reveals that Saul was as “one born out of due time,” that is,- as one boro before his time. He BLACKBOARD LESSON
