Paying off debt while saving for a down payment can be challenging but achievable with a balanced approach. Start by creating a budget that allocates a portion of your income toward both debt repayment and savings for your down payment. Consider prioritizing high-interest debt first and look for ways to cut expenses or increase your income, such as taking on a side job, to accelerate both goals. 519.639.2344 Mortgages Made Easy gregbaxter@rogers.com Contact Me Today and Let’s Start Talking Mortgages Dominion Lending Centres Forest City Funding

Letter from the Editor Winter finally seems to be coming to an end, and after the last few years of milder weather, this season reminded us what a true Canadian winter feels like — magical, but very, very cold. It was a season of frosted windows, shovelling marathons, and the constant search for missing gloves. Where do all the right ones go? With spring come fresh starts, new
While you’re there, don’t forget to bring your ballot for our 2nd Annual Readers’ Choice Awards. Once again, I’m asking you, our readers, to tell me all about your favourite businesses in St. Thomas. We have over 50 categories, from best oil change to best chicken wings to best customer service (which is always a hotly contested race). You’ll find the ballot on page 15 of this issue, or you can vote online at www.readerschoicestthomas. ca. Plus, just for voting, you’ll be entered for a chance to win a $250 Briwood Farm Market gift certificate! Another exciting event this month is the St. Thomas & District Chamber of Commerce Impact Awards, happening on Friday, April 25th. This is always a fantastic evening that brings the community together to celebrate local businesses, entrepreneurs, and non-profit organizations. As a proud recipient of the 2023 Exceeding Everest Impact Award (since renamed Business of the Year), I can say firsthand what an honour it is to be recognized. The evening also features an incredible food showcase, and this year’s guest speaker is none other than Kris Pearn, an animator, writer, and director behind films like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. If you haven’t secured your ticket yet, reach out to the Chamber soon because they will sell out. To read about this year’s nominees and award categories, check out pages 48 to 55 of this month’s issue. I hope you have a fantastic month, and I look forward to seeing you at one of our many wonderful local events!
life, and a general sense of renewal. For many homeowners, that means considering changes — whether it’s upgrading to a larger home, downsizing to something more manageable, or simply breathing new life into their current space. That’s why, in this issue, we present our annual Spring Home & Garden feature along with the 2025 St. Thomas Home Show Guide. These pages are packed with inspiration and, more importantly, connections to local experts who can turn your home improvement dreams into reality. If you’ve never been to the St. Thomas Home Show, I highly encourage you to check it out. It’s a fantastic weekend filled with amazing local businesses showcasing their expertise. This year, the Doug Tarry Room will feature even more local organizations sharing their talents. And beyond learning about home improvement, plenty of great prizes can be won. Be sure to stop by the Hometown St. Thomas table as you come in and enter for a chance to win $500 Downtown Dollars!

Legacy Shorin Ryu Karate Jutsu, Celebrating 54 Years! by Peri Hayes
Together, Gary Legacy (Hanshi) and John Kittelberger (Kyoshi) operate Legacy Shorin Ryu Karate Jutsu. The pair are thrilled to be celebrating their existence as one of oldest karate clubs in North America, with 54 years in business achieved on February 28th of this year. In keeping with the name of this establishment, the style which they practice is known as Shorin Ryu Karate Jutsu. Kyoshi John details, “It’s a traditional karate style that is linear, which came from Okinawa, Japan and is designed for defense.” Kyoshi John is an 8th Degree in Martial Arts and has been immersed in karate for 45 years, with Hanshi Legacy as his beloved instructor. Prior to Legacy Shorin Ryu Karate Jutsu, there was a club in St. Thomas belonging to the association with which Hanshi Legacy was involved and they gifted their space to him -- indicative of his undeniable dedication. Having independently launched this business, Hanshi Legacy remains incredibly involved at the age of 78 years. Representative of the ways in which Hanshi Legacy has mastered Shorin Ryu Karate Jutsu, Kyoshi John shares, “Hanshi Legacy is recognized across the world as a 10th Dan.” Presently, there are eight instructors at their St. Thomas location and every class has at least one Black Belt. As Kyoshi John proudly highlights, “About 30 percent of this Dojo are female, and quite a few are Black Belts.” Hanshi Legacy and Kyoshi John also recognize the world champions who have practiced at this esteemed Dojo, including Sensei Leo Loucks. With St. Thomas being Legacy Shorin Ryu Karate Jutsu’s Home Dojo, remaining establishments include one each in Kitchener, Hamilton and Toronto, as well as several in London and another four in British Columbia. Located at 1 Silver Street, Legacy Shorin Ryu Karate Jutsu is offered to ages four and above. Their hours of operation are Monday through Thursday from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm with three classes presented, in addition to their Saturday session for advanced students from 10:00 am until 11:30 am. As Hanshi Legacy and Kyoshi John describe, Shorin Ryu Karate Jutsu is one of the only styles with a program for Black Belts higher than 4th Degree -- for which they gather for Hanshi from 8:00 am until 9:30 am. Kyoshi John encourages, “If you have an open mind, you can learn. I walk away from every class having learned something
and that keeps the fire going inside.” Moreover, Hanshi Legacy thoughtfully voices, “I like to give back. It is nice to see the young children becoming more confident, and when parents share that this has an impact outside of Legacy Shorin Ryu Karate Jutsu -- in school, for example. We are making the world a better place one person at a time.” Classes occur on a monthly basis, with a pay-per-month system in place. As Kyoshi John assures, “Come in the door and experience our free trial for a couple of weeks to ensure that you like this space, so that you are not spending any money without feeling good.”

The Blooming Spring Market by Peri Hayes Owner of The Ice Box, Markus Hawco, enthuses about The Blooming Spring Market on the horizon, “We are creating a strong lineup of markets: Our Christmas Market, The Blooming Spring Market and our soon-to-be announced summer markets.” These events are in conjunction with The Ice Box Event Fund; a not-for-profit designed to create the continuation of these cheerful occasions. “This event welcomes the public to enjoy a well-rounded selection of crafts and various items for sale,” Markus exclaims. Moreover, The Blooming Spring Market is intentionally curated to ensure that no particular product or category will surpass more than three vendor representatives, serving the purpose of minimal repetition. In exciting news, the ice will be removed and Markus has consequently doubled the amount of vendors for this event -- with 84 participants located throughout the venue, on the rink pad. For notification of future markets, Markus invites entrepreneurs to complete The Ice Box’s Vendor Registry. Debuting with The Blooming Spring Market is their food area for guests to order and gather for a meal. “Come hungry,” Markus encourages. Furthermore, there will be beverages for sale -- both cocktails and mocktails with a spring theme. In accordance with this inspiration, there will be vibrant decorations and gorgeous floral photo opportunities bringing the sweetness of the season to the space. Markus reveals that they have prepared rustic wooden swings for people to enjoy. As well, planter boxes have been built to outline the areas of the market for governing traffic flow. These pieces will be for sale, available for retrieval at the event’s end.
“Honestly,” Markus expresses, “What I’m excited about is how we have had a number of vendors that want to come back out. They trust us to put on a good market. We are anticipating to see the same, if not larger crowd sizes. It was so exciting to see how many people came through last time.” As graciously accepted donations will be directed to The Ice Box Event Fund, supporting The Blooming Spring Market will, therefore, be re-invested into their next celebration.. Markus assures, “People can feel good about bringing a bigger and better experience to St. Thomas every year.” The Blooming Spring Market will be celebrated during the weekend of April 26 and 27th on the arena floor of the Joe Thornton Community Centre, both days from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm. With 5,000 attendees at their previous Christmas Market, Markus proudly reflects, “It’s giving us a good feeling and good stride that we are putting on a strong market for everyone to enjoy!” The Ice Box concession operates from 4:30 pm until 8:30 pm throughout the week, and from 8:30 am until 8:30 pm on weekends. Explore The Ice Box’s social media for further information, email info@theicebox.ca with inquiries and stay tuned for their summer facility announcement.

Kathryn White Adds Author to Resume! by Peri Hayes Kathryn White delightedly discusses how her beautiful book debut came to be. She self-published Living to Thrive: A Holistic Guide to Living with Cancer in September of 2024, releasing through a publisher in November. Kathryn, a Certified Holistic Cancer Coach since 2021, proudly shares that March 18th of this year marked her 10-year post-diagnosis anniversary. In 2015, Kathryn was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer. She decided last year that the time felt both right and important for her to explore this storytelling process. “While there has been hardship,” Kathryn candidly recognizes, “it has completely changed my life.” Referring to herself and her community as “cancer thrivers”, Kathryn describes, “From working with women who have cancer, I felt like there was more depth to the story by being able to incorporate their experiences.” This insightful guide travels through various phases of life with cancer, the chapter titles being related to the themes that come up most often in her coaching practice. Kathryn introduces her own background and personal connection to each subject before presenting her cancer coaching program tools. There is also a section in her book wherein she focuses on the language centred around cancer as a source of regulating one’s central nervous system: “I invite people to use language that calms and encourages them to deactivate their fight or flight response.” Another component in one of her chapters is, as the author reveals, “Asking for help is a superpower.” Through Kathryn’s Holistic Cancer Coaching, she offers private coaching and her Living to Thrive Membership Program — highlighting a
foundation of relevant strategies to those during their walk with cancer — as well as group coaching. “Each person’s cancer story is different; this is not a linear one-size-fits-all process. Coaching empowers each person to choose the path that they want to follow.”

Detailing what the pages of her book entail, Kathryn voices, “It takes someone through the process from diagnosis to thoughts and feelings around the diagnosis, unpacking what just happened and being vulnerable. Instead of asking why this happened, it’s about asking what you are going to do with this.” Furthermore, Kathryn explores topics surrounding the caregiver, the impact on family, internal and external scars on the body and soul, triggers and beyond. Kathryn shines light on healthy bodies, mindfulness and mindset — working through stress and nourishing mind management — along with the spirit and honing in on self-love. “If you don’t believe that you can do hard things, then it can make moving forward even more challenging.” As Kathryn candidly conveys, “The last chapter is about a phone call from one of my doctors who introduced this concept of living with cancer, as opposed to being on this roller coaster all of the time. This levelled the playing field for me.” Asked what inspired Kathryn to write this captivating book, she thoughtfully responds, “I really just want to help and reach
as many people as I can. There is a different way to live with cancer than what is portrayed in movies and books. When people hear the word ‘cancer’, their minds go to the worst. Everybody’s story is different, and I’m trying to maximize this message that, while conventional medicine saved my life, there are things you can do and there are ways to support your body, mind and spirit outside of the doctor’s office. I will be working on my health for the rest of my life. This is a commitment to myself, and it is the best work I have ever done.” “I was at the Elgin Centre for the Spring Expo in March,” Kathryn cheerfully concludes, “where I had a table, and people were coming up and sharing their stories. It was really beautiful to be able to talk with people in our community who are living with cancer.” Kathryn is grateful for these connective experiences, and looks forward to celebrating her book signings moving forward. The multifaceted Kathryn also hosts her podcast titled Living to Thrive with Cancer, presently in Season 4 and featuring close to 70 episodes. “The truth is that not everybody can access a book, coaching, or membership. This podcast is a free, accessible resource on Spotify and on Apple Podcasts.” Living to Thrive: A Holistic Guide to Living with Cancer is available at Port Stanley’s Lake House Books, as well as online through Amazon, Chapters and Kathryn’s kathrynwhite.coach website. The local entrepreneur announces that she has also personally recorded the audiobook for Audible, which will be released in the near future. Those with inquiries are welcome to discover Kathryn’s Contact Form through her aforementioned website, or connect by emailing hello@kathrynwhite.coach. Upcoming Book Signings: April 12th: Simply Massage & Associates, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm June 14th: Lake House Books, 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Techwillow in St. Thomas by Peri Hayes Anusha Dsouza and her beloved husband, Elvis Sequeira, discuss their flourishing Techwillow business. The pair are beaming to be celebrating their service in this welcoming community. Anusha is a mobile game developer, having dedicated 15 years thus far to this field, with blockbusters and customized Unity3D games under her belt. Meanwhile, Elvis is a software architect with 20 years of experience. Both with farming backgrounds, Anusha and Elvis sought a hobby farmland property, “Elan Estates” in Bayham. Here with their daughter, they enjoy nature; raising bunnies, chickens, dogs and even their adopted pet snake. With a current total of four Educators, Techwillow is operating in two locations – St. Thomas and Tillsonburg. Techwillow is a STEM-based program led by Anusha, a Certified STEM Educator with a passion for working with children. As Elvis highlights, “Anusha has a profound love for teaching.” The motivated entrepreneur adds, “I wanted to come out of the corporate job for local work.” Anusha has impressively earned her Bachelors in Math, Physics and Statistics, as well as her Masters in Computer Applications, along with being a Google Certified – Project Manager, Product Owner and Scrum Master. The versatile Techwillow is suitable for ages seven through thirty. Skill building specifically geared toward high school graduates involves website and game development, as well as support offered while applying for jobs. The unique benefit is having lifetime access to the Techwillow course material, as Anusha and Elvis voice in unison, “Once a student, always a student of the Techwillow family.” Techwillow has partnered with Mechatron Robotics to develop structured learning courses and kits in coding and robotics —
both software and hardware — with their syllabus evaluated by STEM.org and more than 25 course options. Anusha and Elvis proudly share that the STEM.org certificates which students earn for completing these courses are recognized on a global scale. Tutoring and online workshops are also available for grades K through 12. They are presently preparing for their “STEM-Surge”, both in Tillsonburg and St. Thomas; entailing an eight-week- long adventurous program to complete the entire STEM course in a single summer. In particular, Anusha is striving for further mentorship opportunities; strengthening their engagement with local schools and robotics groups. As her three-year goal, Anusha shares her intent to develop a national-level competition team. Techwillow is accepting four to six students per class, for which individuals can register through their techwillow.ca/ website. Alternatively, phone 647-250-1223 to book a demonstration and navigate your child’s personal interests. Techwillow is a space for exploring innovation and discovering future technologies, ultimately unlocking one’s potential. Beginning on April 16th, these courses will be held at the Atrium every Wednesday evening.

Pickleball for Parkinson’s Tournament by Peri Hayes Preparing since November, Vicki Carrothers passionately speaks about the Pickleball for Parkinson’s Tournament on May 10th. Coordinator and Organizer, Vicki, describes the inspiration for this inclusive competition with proceeds being directed toward Parkinson Society Southwestern Ontario (PSSO). “I remain hopeful for a cure for Parkinson’s Disease,” Vicki voices. Several years ago, Vicki was considering avenues for supporting her brother, Terry, in Florida and sister, Janet, in Thamesford who live with Parkinson’s: “Both are pickleball players, making this cause deeply personal for me.” Vicki proposed the idea of a charity event to Janet, revealing, “She was as excited as I was! With my sister on board, the next step was to find someone who could run the games.” Along with Janet as Treasurer, Ralph Hackbarth is their ongoing Tournament Director. “He is invaluable,” Vicki shares. She also approached her dear friend, Bernie Dunn: “He enthusiastically served as our tournament photographer for the first two years. His contributions were instrumental in securing sponsorships and donations for our cause.” While Bernie has since passed away, the significance of his involvement during the birth of this meaningful event lives on. “Judy Reddick has taken on the role of tournament photo- grapher, adding a unique twist by providing a photobooth where attendees can wear stylish hats or masks -- all while raising funds for our mission,” Vicki announces. This tournament was held in Dorchester for the first two years, raising $10,730 to date and expanding from 64 to 96 participants
this year in The Court House Pickleball and Social Facility at 115 Dennis Road, Unit 1, St. Thomas. Six teams of 16 players will compete in seven fifteen-minute matches with The Court House providing lunch, as well as their exquisite lounge space for connecting and relaxing between games. Adhering to IFP regulations, Vicki delightedly details, “Prepare for an exciting twist, as the identities of your teammates will remain a mystery until the tournament day!” Impressively, 75% of their registration capacity was achieved within three days and while their roster has since been filled, acceptance to their waitlist without payment remains open. As Vicki enthuses, “I am excited about the growth of this event and everybody coming together. The enthusiasm is truly amazing, and I can just feel that this will be a great success. We are grateful for our dedicated sponsors, including Bob Riehl of Bob’s Racquet Works in Goderich, Chris Evans of Brick House Paddles in St. Marys and Jay Salisbury of the Ontario Pickleball Store in London.” “We are seeking cash or gift donations from businesses interested in sponsoring our cause. Cash contributions will be directed to PSSO, while prize donations will be raffled among players, volunteers and spectators. We encourage the public to attend this event, free of charge.” To conclude, Vicki expresses appreciation for the support from volunteers, players and sponsors, “Whose generosity and kindness will leave a lasting impact on us.” From 9:00 am until 4:00 pm, this camaraderie-filled day is sure to showcase community strength. Meet the Volunteers Who Support Your Library by Amelia Bainbridge, St. Thomas Public Library Communications & Donor Relations Coordinator Volunteers are a big part of what makes St. Thomas Public Library such a great place! Right now, we have two amazing groups who support us: the Teen Advisory Board (TAB) and the Friends of St. Thomas Public Library. They may be different, but they both make a huge impact — and we’re so grateful for everything they do! Teen Advisory Board Our Teen Advisory Board (TAB) is a group of high school students in grades 9–12 who meet monthly at the library. Their role is to help plan and promote programs, suggest ways to make the library a more welcoming place for teens, and to create content for the library’s social media. TAB members also assist with library events during March Break, PD Days, and summer, helping our staff run busy programs smoothly. TAB isn’t just about volunteering — it’s also a chance for teens to connect over books, shared experiences, and what’s happening in the world. It’s a fun way to meet new people, build leadership skills, and make a real impact in the community. Plus, TAB members earn volunteer hours while gaining hands-on experience in planning, teamwork, and working with the public! If you’re a teen looking for a fun and meaningful way to get involved, we’d love to have you! You can apply for TAB online at stthomaspubliclibrary.ca/youth. the library since 1994, and their impact has been incredible. Over the years, they’ve donated more than $200,000, helping us grow and bring new services to the community. Thanks to their generosity, we’ve been able to launch big projects like the Elgin Centre Kiosk and the Outreach Van, making library materials more accessible to everyone. So, how do they do it? The Friends run an independent charity that raises funds by selling used books, with all proceeds going straight back to the library. They also host special auctions for rare and collectible books. Their dedication and hard work make a huge difference, and we couldn’t be more grateful! Want to support the library? A simple way is to visit the Friends of the Library bookshop at Elgin Centre and grab a great read. If you’re interested in joining the Friends and volunteering, you can pick up an application at their shop or print one from our website: stthomaspubliclibrary.ca/friends-of-the-library. Volunteers are the heart of our library, and we appreciate everything they do to make our community stronger. Whether you’re a teen looking for a fun way to get involved or an adult wanting to give back, there’s a place for you at the library!
Thank you to our many wonderful volunteers. You bring so much joy into our home!

More Than Volunteers – The Heart of Local Healthcare Submitted by St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Foundation At the core of the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) Foundation is something truly powerful— our volunteers. Their passion, dedication, and generosity make everything we do possible. They are the heart of our efforts, ensuring that high-quality healthcare remains available for our community when it’s needed most. From the front lines of fundraising to behind-the-scenes leadership, their impact is woven into every success we achieve. Volunteers’ contributions go far beyond the time they give. From providing leadership at the Board level to lending a helping hand at special events, introducing the Foundation to new supporters, and advocating for local healthcare, their work creates lasting impact. Their dedication has made critical hospital advancements possible, most recently, under the direction of volunteer Campaign Chair, Jeff Yurek, bringing St. Thomas & Elgin County’s first MRI, enhancing ICU care and relocation of
STEGH’s Laboratory. Thanks to volunteer efforts, STEGH can continue delivering the best care possible, right here. The impact of our volunteers doesn’t stop at a single event or project. They are catalysts for something much greater — igniting a movement of generosity, community spirit, and long- term support. Their dedication inspires others to step forward, to lend their own time, skills, and resources, and to become part of something bigger. Every introduction they make, every story they share, and every hour they give strengthens our mission, ensuring that future generations will have access to the best possible care. This momentum is building. As we look ahead to the future, our community is more engaged than ever, excited for what’s next for STEGH. That excitement exists because of our volunteers, because of their belief in what’s possible and their commitment to making it happen. Their unwavering support has created a ripple effect, ensuring that future healthcare innovations, advancements, and life-saving equipment continue to be funded and available for those who need them. To our volunteers: thank you. Your time, skills, and unwavering dedication do not go unnoticed. You are more than supporters — you are leaders, mentors, and role models shaping the future of healthcare in our region. Because of you, lives are changed. If you are looking for a way to make a meaningful impact, we invite you to be part of this movement. Whether through advocacy, event support, or leadership, every effort makes a difference. By joining this community of dedicated supporters, you can help ensure that the care we rely on today continues to grow and evolve for years to come. Your time, passion, and support can change lives. The Impact of Citizens on Patrol with the STPS by Sgt. Torrin Lauziere April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the individuals who generously give their time and energy to make our community a better place. Among these dedicated volunteers are the members of the St. Thomas Police Service’s (STPS) Citizens on Patrol (COP) program; an initiative that plays a crucial role in fostering safety and connection throughout our city. Established in 2019, the COP program is a community-driven volunteer initiative designed to provide a visible presence in St. Thomas while working alongside STPS, local businesses, and residential areas. The goal is clear: to deter criminal activity, reduce crime, and promote a safer community for all. By serving as non-confrontational observers, COP volunteers act as extra eyes and ears for the police, reporting suspicious activity and fostering positive interactions with the public. Volunteers in the COP program serve as goodwill ambassadors, representing the spirit of community en-gagement and safety. Their presence alone can be a powerful deterrent to crime, making neighborhoods feel more secure. These dedicated individuals are trained to observe and report incidents, ensuring that their role remains supportive rather than enforcement-based. It is important to note that COP volunteers do not intervene in crimes or attempt to apprehend individuals. Instead, they provide valuable intelligence to STPS, allowing officers to respond swiftly and appropriately when needed. By participating in the COP program, volunteers directly contribute to the overall wellness of St. Thomas. Their commitment helps strengthen partnerships between law
enforcement and the community, reinforcing a shared responsibility for public safety. Whether patrolling neigh- bourhoods, engaging with local businesses or simply being a reassuring presence at community events, these volunteers play an essential role in making St. Thomas a safer place to live, work and visit. The impact of the COP program extends beyond crime prevention. Volunteers also help build trust between law enforcement and residents, encouraging open communication and collaboration. Their efforts remind us that community safety is not just the responsibility of police officers — it is a collective effort that thrives on engagement and vigilance from all members of society. As we celebrate Volunteer Appreciation Month, we extend our deepest gratitude to the volunteers of the Citizens on Patrol program. Their dedication and service make a meaningful difference in the lives of many. If you are looking for a way to give back to your community and support public safety, consider joining the Citizens on Patrol program. New volunteers are always welcome! Visit cop.stps. on.ca to learn more and apply today. Together, we can continue to build a safer and stronger St. Thomas.

The Value of Hiring Professionals for Home Renovations In an age of online tutorials and weekend warrior projects, many homeowners are tempted to tackle renovations themselves. While a DIY approach may work for cosmetic updates, major home improvements—especially those involving electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry—are best left to trained professionals. Hiring skilled tradespeople not only ensures safety and quality but can also save homeowners money in the long run by avoiding costly mistakes. Each trade requires years of education, training, and hands- on experience. Electricians must understand complex wiring systems and adhere to strict safety codes to prevent fire hazards. Plumbers navigate intricate piping networks to ensure proper drainage and water flow, avoiding potential leaks that can cause significant structural damage. HVAC technicians ensure heating and cooling systems run efficiently, reducing energy costs and preventing hazardous carbon monoxide leaks. Carpenters, with their precise craftsmanship, create structurally sound frameworks, cabinetry, and finishings that enhance a home’s value and longevity. One of the biggest risks of DIY home improvement is the potential for injury. Electrical work can lead to serious shocks or fires if done improperly. Faulty plumbing can result in water damage and mold growth. Poor HVAC installations may compromise air quality or cause system failures. Even seemingly simple carpentry projects can lead to accidents if proper techniques and tools aren’t used. Professionals follow strict safety protocols to protect themselves, the homeowners, and the integrity of the home.
