Pickleball for Parkinson’s Tournament by Peri Hayes Preparing since November, Vicki Carrothers passionately speaks about the Pickleball for Parkinson’s Tournament on May 10th. Coordinator and Organizer, Vicki, describes the inspiration for this inclusive competition with proceeds being directed toward Parkinson Society Southwestern Ontario (PSSO). “I remain hopeful for a cure for Parkinson’s Disease,” Vicki voices. Several years ago, Vicki was considering avenues for supporting her brother, Terry, in Florida and sister, Janet, in Thamesford who live with Parkinson’s: “Both are pickleball players, making this cause deeply personal for me.” Vicki proposed the idea of a charity event to Janet, revealing, “She was as excited as I was! With my sister on board, the next step was to find someone who could run the games.” Along with Janet as Treasurer, Ralph Hackbarth is their ongoing Tournament Director. “He is invaluable,” Vicki shares. She also approached her dear friend, Bernie Dunn: “He enthusiastically served as our tournament photographer for the first two years. His contributions were instrumental in securing sponsorships and donations for our cause.” While Bernie has since passed away, the significance of his involvement during the birth of this meaningful event lives on. “Judy Reddick has taken on the role of tournament photo- grapher, adding a unique twist by providing a photobooth where attendees can wear stylish hats or masks -- all while raising funds for our mission,” Vicki announces. This tournament was held in Dorchester for the first two years, raising $10,730 to date and expanding from 64 to 96 participants
this year in The Court House Pickleball and Social Facility at 115 Dennis Road, Unit 1, St. Thomas. Six teams of 16 players will compete in seven fifteen-minute matches with The Court House providing lunch, as well as their exquisite lounge space for connecting and relaxing between games. Adhering to IFP regulations, Vicki delightedly details, “Prepare for an exciting twist, as the identities of your teammates will remain a mystery until the tournament day!” Impressively, 75% of their registration capacity was achieved within three days and while their roster has since been filled, acceptance to their waitlist without payment remains open. As Vicki enthuses, “I am excited about the growth of this event and everybody coming together. The enthusiasm is truly amazing, and I can just feel that this will be a great success. We are grateful for our dedicated sponsors, including Bob Riehl of Bob’s Racquet Works in Goderich, Chris Evans of Brick House Paddles in St. Marys and Jay Salisbury of the Ontario Pickleball Store in London.” “We are seeking cash or gift donations from businesses interested in sponsoring our cause. Cash contributions will be directed to PSSO, while prize donations will be raffled among players, volunteers and spectators. We encourage the public to attend this event, free of charge.” To conclude, Vicki expresses appreciation for the support from volunteers, players and sponsors, “Whose generosity and kindness will leave a lasting impact on us.” From 9:00 am until 4:00 pm, this camaraderie-filled day is sure to showcase community strength.
