The Impact of Citizens on Patrol with the STPS by Sgt. Torrin Lauziere April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the individuals who generously give their time and energy to make our community a better place. Among these dedicated volunteers are the members of the St. Thomas Police Service’s (STPS) Citizens on Patrol (COP) program; an initiative that plays a crucial role in fostering safety and connection throughout our city. Established in 2019, the COP program is a community-driven volunteer initiative designed to provide a visible presence in St. Thomas while working alongside STPS, local businesses, and residential areas. The goal is clear: to deter criminal activity, reduce crime, and promote a safer community for all. By serving as non-confrontational observers, COP volunteers act as extra eyes and ears for the police, reporting suspicious activity and fostering positive interactions with the public. Volunteers in the COP program serve as goodwill ambassadors, representing the spirit of community en-gagement and safety. Their presence alone can be a powerful deterrent to crime, making neighborhoods feel more secure. These dedicated individuals are trained to observe and report incidents, ensuring that their role remains supportive rather than enforcement-based. It is important to note that COP volunteers do not intervene in crimes or attempt to apprehend individuals. Instead, they provide valuable intelligence to STPS, allowing officers to respond swiftly and appropriately when needed. By participating in the COP program, volunteers directly contribute to the overall wellness of St. Thomas. Their commitment helps strengthen partnerships between law
enforcement and the community, reinforcing a shared responsibility for public safety. Whether patrolling neigh- bourhoods, engaging with local businesses or simply being a reassuring presence at community events, these volunteers play an essential role in making St. Thomas a safer place to live, work and visit. The impact of the COP program extends beyond crime prevention. Volunteers also help build trust between law enforcement and residents, encouraging open communication and collaboration. Their efforts remind us that community safety is not just the responsibility of police officers — it is a collective effort that thrives on engagement and vigilance from all members of society. As we celebrate Volunteer Appreciation Month, we extend our deepest gratitude to the volunteers of the Citizens on Patrol program. Their dedication and service make a meaningful difference in the lives of many. If you are looking for a way to give back to your community and support public safety, consider joining the Citizens on Patrol program. New volunteers are always welcome!
