Curling for Wellspring with the Hyde Park & District Lions by Pamela Hardbottle The Hyde Park & District Lions Club held their first Annual Curling Bonspiel on Saturday March 8, 2025 at the London Curling Club on Lyle Street in London. The fundraiser was open to the public and all funds raised were donated to Wellspring London. It was a special day for the Lions as people young and old came together for a great cause and fellowship. The Hyde Park & District Leo Club even had a team of youth ages 12 to 18. It was amazing – none of them had ever filed before. A light breakfast was served before the games began. Lion Terry made the soup that was served for lunch along with an assortment of beautiful sandwiches. We enjoyed laughs while selling 50/50 tickets and there were three tables full of donated items for the penny draw. The Hyde Park Lions would like to thank everyone who helped make it a very memorable day while raising funds for Wellspring. See you next year.

Spring is here, which means it’s time to give your ride some TLC. I’ve got 11 quick tips to get your car humming for the sunny season ahead: First up, swap out the old oil and filter for some fresh fluids. Your engine will thank you! While you’re at it, top off any low brake fluid, coolant, or power steering fluid. Keeping those reservoirs filled keeps everything running smoothly. Those windshield wipers have done a number this winter. Treat your car to a fresh pair so you can see clearly on those April showers. Make sure your battery is still kicking with enough charge. Cold weather is rough on batteries, so have it tested just to be safe. Got any cracks or chips in the windshield? Fix them now before they spread into bigger problems. Brakes are kinda important, so inspect your pads and rotors to catch any wear and tear. Lube up any squeaky chassis parts like door hinges while you’re at it. Don’t forget the suspension too! Check if your belts and hoses look cracked or worn. Replace them now to avoid headaches later. Swap out air and fuel filters so your engine breathes easy.

The Nostalgic Theatre is Calling You! The Nostalgic Theatre is a non-profit organization of vibrant, fun- loving folks over 55 years of age who perform variety shows of skits, songs, vignettes, tap dances and more. “We perform at nursing and retirement homes in and around London,” explained Kim Paulton, Vice President, “and also entertain at Rotary Clubs, fundraisers and anniversary celebrations. Our shows are an entertaining hour of songs and skits, and quite funny!” Their next show will be held at Richmond Woods Retirement Village, April 25.
Sheila Armstrong and Ron Hewitt. At right below is Chuck Ball as Elvis.
Sheila Armstrong has been a resident of Oakridge for more than thirty years and as a member of The Nostalgic Theatre has served on the Board in many capacities – President, V.P. and Secretary. “As vaudeville-style entertainment is our jam, I have also performed in skits, solos and duets along with group numbers that have included choreography”. Now her granddaughter Keira has heard the call: she travelled to New York with the Original Kids Theatre Company in March to see some Broadway shows. The Nostalgic Theatre is currently looking for a new director, back stage / costumes helpers, performers and someone to assist
with the sound system. This is your chance to work with some great folks, share your talents and bring joy to the community. For more information, contact Kim at kimpaulton@hotmail.com and look for Nostalgia Theatre on Facebook.

Jazz by the Bog by Susan Smythe James Taylor, an American singer-songwriter and guitarist, six- time Grammy Award winner, and inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000, left his home state of North Carolina in the mid-1960s to move to New York City and formed a band with friends who then played songs that James wrote. However, his big breakout tune which climbed the American song charts to Number 3 in 1970 was Fire & Rain . His next big hit, going all the way to Number 1, was You’ve Got a Friend , written by Carole King. Carole also started out in the 1960s writing songs with her then-husband and eventually had 118 pop hits appearing on the Billboard Hot 100 over the latter half of the 20th century. On Friday, January 31st, a very cold and wintry evening, many of these songs came to life as JAZZ BY THE BOG at St. Aidan’s Anglican Church welcomed patrons to our second concert of the season, You’ve Got a Friend , featuring Denise Pelley. The sold out room warmed up quickly as the first chords of I Feel the Earth Move indicated a distinct jazz rhythm from the band, including solos by Paul Stevenson on trumpet and Kim Ladd on electronic bass (an interesting-looking instrument!). Fire & Rain, Up On the Roof – with a beautiful flugel horn countermelody, and a very easy jazz swing on Shower the People which segued into a great gospel waltz called Way Over Yonder were some of the great tunes in the first half. Steve Holowitz (piano) and Greg Mainprize (drums) keep the accompaniment interesting under Denise’s smooth delivery of every note! The first set closed with a swing feel to How Sweet It Is , written by James and inspired by the famous phrase uttered by Jackie Gleason on his 1960s variety show every week. (Trivia note!) The second half of the concert was also full of wonderful arrangements of familiar tunes – You’ve Got a Friend was stunning as a slow jazz style with only piano accompaniment. Secret of Life invites us to enjoy the passage of time even though Everybody Has the Blues at some point. Before singing the next song, Denise reminded us that she actually opened for Aretha Franklin at the John Labatt Centre (now Canada Life Place) in 2003 and got to meet the legend in her dressing room, learning that it’s important to put your own spin on your music and make it yours. Carole King’s You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman this time was all Denise-style and wonderful! After a couple more numbers to end the set plus an encore, the applause and smiles on faces as our audience members bundled up to face the cold parking lot, was proof that music truly is good for the soul.
