Industry Associations Partner To Study MRF Fires Several industry associations have partnered to study the causes and frequency of material recovery facility (MRF) fires in the United States, including the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI),Washington; the Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF), Raleigh, North Carolina; National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA), Arlington,Virginia; and the SolidWaste Association of North America (SWANA), Silver Spring, Maryland. The objective of the study is to compile information that summarizes the following information about fires at MRFs and scrap recycling facilities and in collection vehicles: • frequency of MRF and scrap recycling fires annually; • frequency of collection vehicle fires; • suspected causes of these fires; • strategies and technologies used to fight these fires; • damage caused by these fires (e.g., property, personnel injuries or death and lost operating revenue); • preventive measures taken to minimize the potential for fires; and • likelihood that lithium-ion batteries disposed of at MRFs or scrap yards caused a fire. GFL Environmental Plans for Acquisitions Toronto, Ontario-based GFL Environmental Inc., a North American provider of diversified environmental solu- tions, raised $1.4 billion in its IPO in March. And now the company has its eye on acquisition opportunities over the next three to six months, in the wake of the corona- virus pandemic. Minnesota To Award $400,000 In Recycling Grants The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), St. Paul, Minnesota, plans to award a total of $400,000 in grants de- signed to help create a strong, sustainable market for recy- clable materials. The MPCA will award grants in amounts from $50,000 to $250,000 to Minnesota businesses or or- ganizations that use recyclable materials in their products. The goal of the grants is to help increase both demand for and value of recyclable materials, while also keeping items out of landfills and creating jobs in Minnesota. In recent years, the recycling industry has supported more than 60,000 jobs and more than $3.4 billion in wages in the state of Minnesota. But in the wake of China’s restrictions on importing recyclables from the United States, recycling markets are fragile, MPCA reported. The state’s Recycling Market Development Grants program was approved by Min- nesota Legislature in 2019 to ensure the recycling market remains strong and is able to protect jobs. Proposals are primarily being sought for new commercial uses of mixed paper, glass and organics. However, other ideas, including for plastics, paint and construction products will be considered.
