Campbell has made significant progress recently in reduc- ing waste and encouraging recycling: In 2019, V8 V-Fusion and V8 Blends multi-serve bottles switched from shrink sleeve labels to wrap labels, allowing the bottles to be easily sorted and recycled in municipal recycling processes. In 2019, Kettle Brand redesigned their chip bags, result- ing in a 43 percent reduction in plastic and reducing the amount of plastic to landfill by two million pounds per year. Campbell has already implemented How2Recycle instruc- tions on many labels and will continue to roll out on addi- tional packaging until 100 percent of packaging includes recycling instructions by 2022. CEPI Sets Out EU Trade Position The Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) has called for any future agreement between the UK and the EU to support the existing trade flow of paper for recycling. The pan-European association representing the forest fi- bre and paper industry said post-Brexit the EU and the UK will become each other’s biggest trading partners in terms of pulp, paper and paper for recycling. CEPI said around 8.1 million tons of pulp,paper for recycling, paper and converted paper products are traded each year be- tween the EU and the UK,with a value of 7.3 billion Euros. In a paper stating its position CEPI said:“Today, around 1.2 million tons of paper for recycling are traded each year be- tween the United Kingdom and the EU27.This circular and sustainable trade flow is a critical part of consumer con- fidence in recycling infrastructure and must be supported post-Brexit. The EU and the UK have impressive recycling rates, respectively 71.3 percent and 87.2 percent. The EU, as part of its Green Deal and its Circular Economy Strategy, and the UK, as part of itsWaste and Resources Strategy, have ambitious recycling targets. “It is essential to maintain a vibrant paper recycling infra- structure and avoid unnecessary friction on paper for recy- cling with existing clear specifications and existing arrange- ments for paper recycling movements.” Covanta CEO Reports Q1 Performance Covanta Holding Corporation,Morristown, New Jersey, re- leased its first quarter earnings.The company reported Q1 revenue of $468 million, which was up from $453 million in Q1 2019.Adjusted EBITDA was $97 million for the quar- ter, up from $84 million in Q1 2019. Net cash provided by operating activities was $61 million, up from $37 million in the same period the previous year. Free cash flow was $19 million for the quarter, up from $6 million in Q1 2019.
