THE RACING PIGEON 29 SEPTEMBER 2023

22

The Provisional North West Section Winners 1st North West Section, 9th Open were Mr & Mrs W Lewis of Kempsey on 1259 over 182 miles. Bill, from ever consistent partner- ship of himself and his wife, Beryl, reported, ‘After the hottest September weekend on record for pigeon racing our picture shows Beryl and myself in the shade holding the North West AA section winner now appley named Freelands Heatwave. You’ll also see a picture of his wing condition. He is a three

duced this bloodline. She has been used as a Widowhood hen for the last two seasons, so her races have been limited to the end of season any age races. To prepare her for these any age races she was one of half a dozen hens I moved to the YB section at the end of old bird racing to be trained and condi- tioned with the young bird team. She paired to a young cock who I then lost just after she laid but she carried on sitting the eggs and then when they hatched looked after the baby again on her own and she went to the race very keen on the youngster which was 10 days old at basketing.’ 2nd North East Section, 17th Open, was Roly Rix of Newmarket on 1179 over 229 miles. Roly continued his impressive season, having taken 1x1st Section, 2x2nd and 2x3rd Section. The bird that came for him this week was a Widowhood hen of van

175 miles. Martin told me, ‘My first bird which was 3rd Section, 19th Open, is a yearling hen that was a late bred. She was only lightly trained with my local Federation. This year she raced to the young bird loft because she was surplus to my main team. Her sire is a Jellema cross my old family, her grand- mother is ‘Saar’, a 2nd Barcelona winner. She was sent to the Old Bird National the week before with an eight day old youngster, where she took provisionally 3rd Section, 9th Open. It seemed a good idea to send her again. She had been very consistent in my local club, so I switched her between training with my young birds in the West of England Combine and the Severn Valley Fed to keep her fit. The motivation was there to feed her first youngster.’ The Provisional Top Ten Open Positions: 1st M Gilbert of Winkfield on 1364.108, 2nd K Wise of Isleworth on 1342.432, 3rd Derek R Nicholls of Barry on 1326.157, 4th Joe Raeburn of Wiltshire on 1322.726, 5th Mr D Coward-Talbott of Chelmsford on 1296.009, 6th Dave Fare of Horfield on 1286.113, 7th Mr & Mrs D. A message from Russell Bradford at Northampton As another BICC season closes, may I take the opportunity to thank the team who have worked tirelessly to keep the Northampton marking station running without a single hitch this year. Namely, Simon Shearsby, Des Owens and Dave Lyden; each of whom travel some 16 to 17 miles and then obvi- ously home again. Also, Andy Smith and my wife Clare for the necessary computer administration. Apart from the marking team may I also thank the convoyers who, as always, have given the club the best racing possible in a difficult weather year and tend to be forgotten once the birds have been released. I concur with you Russell they have done an excellent job. And can I add my thanks to all the BICC members who have sent me information and photographs to put these reports together. As the season ends, I look forward to speaking with you again in the 2024. Look out for news updates in the autumn and winter. Coward-Talbot, Joe Rayburn and Terry Healey whose company we enjoyed when judging at Blackpool. Well done, ‘Tel Boy’, flying well in to the east of the country. We would like to thank the BICC committee for this year’s racing and the Steventon marking station of Jill, Alan and the crew, and also the members enlightening conversations after marking by putting the world to rights. Best wishes to everybody for Christmas and a new season’s racing. Get that target in your sight and don’t stop until you reach it!’ 2nd North West Section, 15th Open, was Paul Morrissey on 1182 over 247 miles. year old blue bar cock sent feeding a two week old youngster which I had to hand feed as both parents were at the race which was quite time consuming. In the picture can be seen our 1000 litre water container from which all our pigeons receive their water. The reason for this is that I think the Severn Trent

Rijn breeding from a good friend, David Beach of Danmon, Essex. The hen had a week out from this Guernsey race last year but came up trumps this year. Roly would like to thank all the fanciers in the Stanstead club for the good racing and banter, Russell and Claire Bradford for running the Northampton marking station and Mike Jackson for his reporting of the BICC races throughout the season. 3rd North East Section, 33rd Open were Chapman & Eastoe of Great Yarmouth on 997 over 286 miles. The partnership timed GB21B01325 at 15:55 to take 3rd spot. 2nd North East Section AA, Rolly Rix with his chief adviser, Howard.

tap water, which we receive, contains many chemicals to kill off various bactericides which in my opinion effects the pigeons gut flora. Gardeners often leave watering cans to stand for 24 hours before using or prefer to use rain water. You can often observe pigeons drinking their bath water and water from puddles or roof gutters in preference to fresh tap water placed in the loft. Why would they do that? Now on to the race winner, that man Mark Gilbert, first in the AA race and second in the young bird race. Fantastic flying and what do we have to do to beat him? The easterly wind favoured the west side of the country, but still, he triumphs. Making history in every race he competes in. Remember Mark, the targets on your back and we are all aiming at you, but once again great flying. The sport of pigeon racing can have a great social side and looking at the early times there are many fanciers who we know on a personnel basis who are at the core of this great sport. So, special congratulations to the Welsh Wizard Derek Nicholls, David
