Choosing a financial advisor is a life decision that can determine your financial security for years to come. A recent study found that 71% of adults admit their financial planning needs improvement. However, only 29% of them work with a financial advisor. There are several key factors when considering hiring a financial advisor: 1. Always Hire an Advisor Who Is a Fiduciary - By definition, a Fiduciary is an individual who is ethically bound to act in another person’s best interest. Fiduciary financial advisors must avoid conflicts of interest and disclose any potential conflicts to clients. 2. Don’t Hire the First Advisor You Meet—While it’s tempting to hire an advisor closest to home or one from the Yellow Pages, this decision requires more time. Interview several advisors before picking the best match for you. 3. Always Ask About Credentials—Financial advisors are required to be credentialed and licensed, and many also become Certified Financial Planners (CFP). 4. Understand How They Are Paid—Some advisors are “fee-only” and charge a flat rate regardless of the situation. Others charge a percentage of your assets under management. Some advisors are paid commissions by mutual funds, which is a serious conflict of interest. Be careful and aware. 5. Select an Advisor with the Correct Specialty ---- Some financial advisors specialize in retirement planning, while others are best for business owners or those with high net worth. Others are best for young professionals starting a family. Understand which advisor’s strengths and expertise are best for your circumstances. A Tonto resident recently reported the theft of mail order items from her front door area. Please do what you can to improve the security of your property by installing door bell cameras or other surveillance equipment.
