Y11 Bulletin 27.09.24

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 11

This week we have had sixth form students coming into our tutor time and working with the students one-to-one with any questions about exams, transition beyond Year 11 and their very own top-tips for the year ahead. We have sent out to parents and shared on the GCSE exam classroom, the mock exam timetable and exam information so all students should be able to get fully prepared for their exams in November. Last weekend we saw a terrifically successful Silver Duke of Edinburgh expedition where almost 60 students from Year 11 battled the rainy conditions to complete their expeditions. All the teachers involved were very impressed with their resilience and hard work. Clemence P from 11PRE took part in the French speaking maths exams ‘the Coupe Animath’ taken last week-end by around 2750 candidates. We are delighted to say that Clemence successfully qualified for the second round, in which around 600 students will participate throughout France (mostly) and beyond. On Friday 4th of October we have our Macmillan coffee morning cake sale. Macmillan’s Coffee Morning is one of the biggest fundraising events to support people living with cancer. Last year Waldegrave raised £964.18 in support of the charity. Students are encouraged to bake nut free cakes at home and bring these into school next Friday to sell at the coffee morning. They should also bring in some cash if they want to buy cakes on the day and help us raise money for this great cause! Coming up on the 10 October, our Drop Down Day will feature top speaker and education consultant, Michele Miller. She is coming in to run a session on revision with students during the day and for parents that evening, 5-5.45pm. Please put the date in your diaries as this will be a really informative session. Students will also have targeted revision sessions in the core subjects during this off-timetable day and then the afternoon will be followed with a fun focus on mental and physical health. Tickets for the Sixth Form open evening on Thursday 24 October also went live last week, don’t forget to reserve your space - Book now. Lastly, Waldegrave is hosting our first ever Wildlife Photography Competition and we would love to see some en- tries from our Year 11 pupils. Please see the advert further in the bulletin for more details.

MRS ROOK, HEAD OF YEAR 11

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ - Margaret Atwood This book follows the Handmaid of a wealthy family as she struggles to fight for her rights in a dystopian society where women are used as breeding machines. While those in charge use threats to suppress the desires of the Handmaids, nothing can stop the desire she has to reunite with her daughter who was cruelly taken away as the repressive state was gaining power. Atwood combines fictional aspects with real world issues such as oppression of women and power divide to create a story that will make you simultaneously devastated and filled with motivation to ensure that we continue to fight for what all women everywhere deserve- the right to choose. ~ Isla
