(Brinkerhoff) was instrumental in securing a 2019 Brownfield grant in the amount of $800K for the City of Newark. The grant was awarded by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) following a nationwide selection process. “We are very pleased to assist the City of Newark with their many Brownfield issues. Our Newark-based staff is committed to address- ing the environmental needs of the surrounding commu- nities,” said CEO Laura Brinkerhoff . This highly competitive USEPA grant program pro- vides funding for testing and remediation of contaminated and underutilized properties. The grant award to Newark affirms the need to remedi- ate properties which were formerly deemed unusable, transform communities, cre- ate jobs and promote eco- nomic redevelopment. “The grant to remediate the 1,250-acre section of the riverfront in the North Ward will help the people of Newark unlock the value and gain access to one of our city’s treasures,” said New- ark Mayor Ras J. Baraka. “ U.S. Senator Cory Booker added, “This is the next step in the revitalization of my home, the City of Newark, and will transform sites along the Passaic River from danger- ous eyesores to redeveloped areas that can be enjoyed for generations to come.” Many of the Brownfield properties are located in des- ignated Opportunity Zones which offer tax incentives to developers and investors who consider Newark a potential investment location. 
