Franz LISZT (1811–1886) Piano Favourites Goran Filipec, Piano

Franz Liszt was a unique personality in the musical world of the 19th century. He was a model and inspiration for many generations of musicians and was magnificently successful as a virtuoso pianist, educator, composer and conductor. Presenting a cornucopia of musical delights, this selection of Liszt favourites includes works inspired by folklore and Italian culture, literary texts and poetry, opera, the brilliance of Paganini and a sheer delight in pianistic virtuosity. Goran Filipec joins a long tradition of making arrangements and personal adaptations to find new vitality and freshness in this much-loved music. Key features: • Acclaimed pianist Goran Filipec has approached Liszt from yet another angle in this album of Liszt’s ‘Best’ piano works, accepting that no single programme can embrace the entirely of Liszt’s prodigious output, but that a carefully curated and superbly performed recording of highlights and favourites can appeal both to a wider public as well as to seasoned fans and musicians all too familiar with this composer. One aspect of this is Filipec’s own respectful arrangements of some of these works, looking for personal alternatives in performance in the spirit of Liszt and pianists of the grand style that came after him, a feature of this recording that will make it attractive and interesting beyond more traditional interpretations. • Filipec has appeared internationally as a recitalist and soloist with symphony orchestras across Europe, the Americas and Japan. He has been invited on multiple occasions to the Mariinsky Theatre Contemporary Piano Faces festival, Progetto Martha Argerich and Dubrovnik Summer Festival. Filipec is co-founder and president of the Société Franz Liszt de Geneve, which is devoted to the appreciation and study of the Hungarian composer’s oeuvre .

The three world premiere choral recordings on this album represent the enduring commitment of Musica Viva NY’s artistic director, Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez, to perform new works by living composers. Richard Einhorn’s The Luminous Ground is a deeply reflective and spiritually engaging work, while Gilda Lyons’ brilliantly written Momotombo is inspired by the spectacular volcanic landscape of Nicaragua. Joseph Turrin’s Crimson Roses Once Again Be Fair is a moving cantata that marks the centenary of the First World War Armistice in November of 1918 – the piece is dedicated to those who bravely fought and died, forever enshrined in history. Key features: • Appearing here in its Naxos debut, Musica Viva NY is a chamber choir based in Manhattan’s historic All Souls Church. Its mission is to bring world-class music to ever- widening audiences through its annual concert series and other activities, and this recording is in line with this ambitious artistic vision. Conductor and artistic director Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez wholeheartedly believes in these three phenomenal compositions and, through this recording project, aims to encourage organisations around the globe to include them in their repertoire in order to extend their reach. • This recording is the culmination of a ten-year journey and, in addition to the renowned Musica Viva NY Choir and Orchestra, we are thrilled to welcome the internationally renowned mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade , who takes the solo in Joseph Turrin’s cantata. Soprano Erinn Sensenig is a regular soloist with choirs and ensembles in New York, having recently performed as soprano soloist on the Poulenc Gloria with Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church Chamber Choir, and as soprano soloist in the Schubert Mass in G with Musica Viva NY.
