Congo Basin Sitting along the equator in the heart of Africa is the Congo Basin. The Congo River waters this area of the continent on its journey to the Atlantic Ocean. Covering 1.2 million square miles, the basin’s rainforest is about the size of Texas, California, and Montana combined! As the second largest tropical rainforest in the world, it plays a key part in regulating the earth’s climate. It is home to gorillas, chimpanzees, and leopards.

African Savanna Over half the continent of Africa is covered by the African Savanna. Miles and miles of grassland are dotted with trees and bushes. During the summer wet season, it can get 15-25 inches of rain each month. With winter comes the dry season, when the savanna hardly gets any rain at all. Big cats hunt here, including lions and cheetahs. Antelope, zebras, and rhinoceroses thunder across the plains. Elephants, giraffes, and hippopotamuses share waterholes. The Serengeti Plains, the most famous savanna region in Africa, witnesses the great migration of wildebeest each year as they follow the seasonal rains.
