CELLO DEMONSTRATION
Mrs Parkin came in to play her cello to us on Monday morning. She played some classical, jazz and modern pieces which the children all loved to listen to. If any Year 2 child would like to have a trial lesson with a cello, please complete the leaflet that was added to bookbags this week.
SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING We held our first of the year School Council meeting this week. As we were fortunate to have a beautiful revamp of our sandpit over the summer holidays, the school councillors passed on their opinions on what sand toys were needed to make it an even more inspiring place to be. I now have a very long list and will be ordering some new accessories over the next few days!
THIS WEEK IN... NURSERY Nursery
Let’s Make: We made apple crumble from the apples in Forest School.
Maths: We have been counting to 5 and back, finding the numbers on the numberline as we go. We have also played games with 2D shapes.

Music & Movement: We have been trains moving fast and slow!
Play to Learn: We have been practising pouring at the water tray as well as noticing that apples float! We have had fun in Squiggle Disco sessions to help strengthen our fingers using playdough.
Phonics: Our sound this week is the short bouncy sound ‘a’ for apples.
Reception
THIS WEEK IN... RECEPTION
This week, we have been celebrating our homes and where we live. Everybody's home is different - some are big, some are small, some have garages, and some have very tall chimneys! We compared our homes to homes in other countries around the world. Can you remember what they look like and why? We also enjoyed looking at maps and noticing all of the different symbols. We read ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and were then challenged to build a new house to protect them from the pesky wolf!
In Maths, we have continued to use the counting principles learnt in Week 2 & 3. The children have been representing numbers in concrete and pictorial ways, as well as linking an amount to the correct numeral. To support your child with this at home, you could encourage them to help you set the table e.g. 5 plates, 5 cups etc.
Book of the Week: The Three Little Pigs by Nicola Baxter WOW words: expedition, construct, villain, demolish, comeuppance
In Phonics, we have learnt the sounds t, i, n and p, and the tricky word ‘I’.
Year 1
THIS WEEK IN... YEAR 1
MATHS: We have consolidated our learning on numbers to 10. We have ordered numbers, from most to least or first to third, considering place value. We have been introduced to the number line as a resource for finding missing numbers and writing numbers in the correct formation. Can you make and decorate your own number line to 10, making sure the numbers are written the correct way around?
LITERACY: We have explored a new story this week, called ‘Small Knight and George and the Royal Chocolate Cake’. We used interesting adjectives to describe the brigands and designed our own party invitations and delicious royal cakes. Can you remember some of the describing words we used? Perhaps you could bake a yummy cake and describe how it tastes and looks!
TOPIC: We loved our special visit from Mr Griffiths in Topic this week! We were busy learning all about how Medieval castles looked and worked collaboratively to label the features! Can I remember what the drawbridge was used for?
Year 1 Swimming
Super swimming from our Year 1 children this week!

LIBRARY: This is on a Friday please return your book to enable you to get a new one.
MATHS: This week we have been learning about comparing numbers and fact families.
SCIENCE: We have enjoyed learning about healthy hearts and the importance of exercise. We have had fun taking our pulse and observing what happens when we jump up and down!
Middle School
THIS WEEK IN... MIDDLE SCHOOL
YEAR 4 In English, we continued to explore the story, 'FArTHER'. After finishing off postcards about the father and son's visit to the beach, we wrote setting descriptions of the father's shed, focusing on noun phrases to describe the sounds that could possibly be heard. We ended the week designing our own flying machines inspired by the book, ahead of writing instructions next week. On Tuesday, during our Literacy Leaf session, we continued to read 'The Wild Robot', answered questions about the story and discussed specific techniques the author has used. In Art we have finished our Christmas card designs and in DT we have been exploring Ancient Greek and Roman chariots, looking at axles and wheels. On Wednesday, Year 3 completed their CAT tests (The Cognitive Abilities Test). We ensured the experience for Year 3 was calm and relaxed, whilst also ensuring that the children were given the right support and conditions. All the children coped well with the activities and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of Forest School and Art to celebrate their hard work. MIDDLE SCHOOL RESPONSIBILITIES: Congratulations to the following children who will be our Eco-Council Representatives this year: Year 4 - Isabelle O, Persie M, Rosie A; Year 3 - Florence U, William H and Frey T. Mrs Welch looks forward to working with this enthusiastic group of children in the weeks and months to come! Year 3
It was wonderful to hear every child read their chosen piece for the Reading Competition. We look forward to the Quarter Finals which will commence next week. A big well done to all the children for reading with such confidence and enthusiasm.
READING: Our wonderful Middle School Librarian, Mrs Habberley, has calculated the total Accelerated Reader Word Count averages this week, and we are pleased to announce that the winning house is Chislehurst, with 43,224 words!

Year 7 Art
A small group of Year 7 pupils took the bus to Faringdon this week to start what will hopefully be a lifelong practice of urban sketching. The Urban Sketchers are a group of artists worldwide who meet to capture their environment in their chosen media. The idea is to take down a glimpse of a place, in any style you enjoy and to be immersed in the process of taking in your surroundings. We focused on leading lines and perspectives, learning that vertical lines are almost always straight up and down, but that horizontal lines on buildings can be at strange angles. We sketched in pen, to move away from the idea that marks are mistakes, which freed us up to enjoy the process and just look where we could for interesting details and angles. Some had time to watercolour at the end. Encouraged by smaller sketchbooks and easily portable materials, lots of these sketchers were saying that they will be carrying a tiny kit around with them in the future!

Boarding News
THIS WEEK IN... BOARDING
The wet weather didn’t dampen the boarders’ spirit as we enjoyed a fun and relaxing week. Last Friday evening, the boarders played a few games of Dodgeball after some well- deserved tuck and a delicious Chinese themed supper.
Jewellery making was a popular choice this week, as well as story time with Miss Archer, and the start of our Thursday evening Art Club, run by Mr Whiteman.
Boarding News
On Wednesday evening, Mrs Auld and I held a Boarders’ Council Supper in the Oak Room during which all sorts of boarding topics were discussed from waffles to wide games over a glass or two of fizzy elderflower.
And finally, well done to Anna C for being our Boarder of the Week for her kindness, organisation and helpfulness. The whole team wish all the boarders a happy Exeat!
Girls’ Sport
Upper School This week’s matches emerged straight from Bertie Bassett’s back pocket, with Allsorts happening on the Hockey pitch. The 1sts suffered a chastening afternoon, as St Andrews dominated. Bebe BS was superb in goal keeping the opposition to just 5 goals, but despite the best efforts of the rest of the team, this was a hard day at the office. However, as Yazz said, ‘the only way is up…’ Bea M produced an outstanding performance for the 2s, ably supported by Eliza H, who grabbed the game’s only goal, and Cassie W, who stopped the opposition cancelling it out. The 3s lost by the odd goal in a close encounter that was settled late on. Ophelia D, Hazel J and Maya B were rocks in defence, Jess H, Anna C, Charlotte J and Olivia VM, all played well up the right flank, with Jess the MVP. This was a huge step in the right direction. The 4s and 5s drew a blank in front of goal, but the former were driven forth by an MVP performance from Poppy B, whilst the 5ths taliswoman was Olivia L. The Colts As and Bs scored 5 and conceded 5, the As on the wrong end of a 2 – 3 result, in spite of the best endeavours of Gracey A, and the Bs coming back from 2 down to rally for victory 3 – 2; Phoebe C with the winning goal, Seraphina J channelling her inner Berlin to lay down an impassable wall in the second half, and thus being named MVP. The Colts C and D fought hard, but to no avail as far as the scores were concerned; however there were improved performances from Eliza U, Masha F, Aggie A, Nea N, Yuki and Ellis. Ultimately, who likes liquorice allsorts anyway. Middle School The U9 girls came up against a tough opposition in the Dragon school. However, we put on a good performance and played some great Hockey. The C team put on the performance of the day, after conceding an early goal, the team came roaring back and thanks to 2 goals each from Emilia and Celia they won 4-1. The B team had a very close 3-2 defeat, Jess did some great tackling. The A team came up against a very strong team, but our passing improved during the game and Tinker and Darcy defended very well.
Boys’ Sport
BOYS’ SPORT -MIDDLE SCHOOL
On Tuesday our Year 4 boys were in action at Chandlings. Once again, the Rugby teams were very successful. A brilliant performance by the A team, with superb tackling from the whole team and very direct running leading to many tries and a convincing victory. Nico was award MVP for his tackling, illusive running and some very unselfish passing. The B team were also dominate in their match with a comfortable victory, Dominic B’s energy and effort were outstanding and James W’s running with the ball and tackling were both superb. The C team had an incredibly exciting match which finished 13-13. Henry K scored 5 tries, Bobby Y scored 3 and Will C scored a great try.
Boys’ Sport
What a superb and successful day of Rugby we enjoyed on Wednesday. The 1st team played a quadrangular against Hatherop, Kitebrook and Ashfold. We won all 3 matches and at times played some high quality fast flowing Rugby. Henry B and Gus M were fantastic in both attack and defence, Jake B and Harry W won lots of ball at the break down and Pip U produced 2 try-saving tackles to ensure we won our final match. The U12A continued to make great progress this year, beating Beaudesert Park, the first time this team have managed to beat them. Superb defence and moving the ball well to space allowed for the victory, Rory C was excellent both in his tackling and carrying the ball forward. The U12B also had a great day in their quadrangular, beating Hatherop and Cokethorpe and 1 very narrow defeat to Beaudesert. Both the U10A and U11A teams had a very successful day at the Stowe festival (see the separate report). The U11B and U10B played at Kitebrook. The U11B team came up against a strong A team, but showed good resilience to stay competitive, Alistair G and Jonathan G were fantastic. The U10B team, who have had a great start to the term, were successful again with a 9-2 victory, including some excellent team tries. Sutch K scored an incredible 6 tries, Henry C scored 2 and 1 for Dimitri B. The Touch team played 2 fixtures and although both ended in narrow defeats, there were lots of good Rugby including tries for Oliver C and Rory H. BOYS’ SPORT -UPPER SCHOOL
Stowe Festival
‘It’s not the team with the best players that wins, it’s the players with the best team’ Allard de Jong U11A The unequivocal advantage of tournaments like the one organised by Stowe School is minutes on the pitch against a variety of opposition. Wednesday saw the Under 11As embrace this opportunity wholeheartedly. A pair of wins over Oratory and Winchester House showed great intent at the breakdown, committed tackling, and clinical finishing. Swanborne House offered a tougher test, but when going behind twice, St Hugh’s fought back to level, and but for a blade of grass in the corner at the death, may well have sneaked a win. A draw was fair. Deep digging for the character to come back was a highlight. Beachborough handed out a lesson to us a week before, and the bruises of that loss endured. In the end, St Hugh’s went toe to toe for 7 minutes before some fatigue set in, and Beachborough snuck in 2 late tries. It is testament to our performance that the Beachborough coach thanked us for their best game this season. Belief is all that was lacking; hopefully something we can gain before our next meeting with our current nemesis after half-term. A crushing victory was meted out on Ashfold for our final game giving us stats of played 5, won 3, drawn 1, lost 1, points for 65, points against 40. This squad work hard, learn fast, and are starting to gel. Let’s hope that the trajectory remains on this upward curve for the rest of the season. U10A The indicator of success in festivals such as these are whether the team grows throughout the afternoon, and these boys did just that. There were too many positives to mention, but most notably our ball retention and rucking was fantastic. Every one of the team deserves a special mention as they bonded determination and intelligence in all performances. The stand out player on the day was Kit C who was playing at another level; nobody went past him, and every time he received the ball he scored. Not a bad way to spend the afternoon!

It was so lovely to meet up with some of our newest alumni at Stowe. Louis W, Jack M-H and Finn M, all popped to see us. They seem to have made a superb start at Stowe, and were full of beans!
Cross Country
Cross Country Recently, all of Upper and Middle School participated in the first of our Cross Country runs of the year with great endeavour and commitment. All the pupils ran well and pushed themselves hard, registering impressive individual times. On this occasion, certificates will be awarded to the 3 fastest boys and girls in each year group, a list of which can be seen below. In future events, which will occur once per half term through the Autumn and Winter terms, certificates will be awarded to the students who improve their times the most. As a Sports department our goal by the end of the year is for every child to be able to run the entire course without walking.

Swimming
On Thursday evening the Years 4 to 8 Swimming teams enjoyed their first fixture of the term against Abingdon Prep. Led by our newly appointed Swimming captains, Ben K and Eliza H, the team put on a dominate performance. The quality of swimming on display was very impressive, hard work the pupil have been doing in their swimming lessons was very evident. It was fantastic to see the children cheering each other and congratulating each other at the end of the race. The final score was a convincing 163 – 104 points victory. An excellent start to the year for the swim team.
