From Snowbasin to Tahoe Facing the 2024 Tahoe Challenge Together

Like so many children, my dad was my hero growing up; and, even more importantly now, as an adult, that title becomes more meaningful and impactful. When we heard about my dad’s cancer diagnosis a couple of years ago, it was a shock … when Dad passed away a couple of months ago in July, it was also a shock, even though we “planned” for it. As I sit to write this, I am nearing my completion of training for the 2024 3x3 “29029” TRAIL Tahoe Challenge, culminating in six months’ worth of rigorous, relentless work. Six months of grueling training for the event and a lifetime of “training” — lessons learned — from my dad. What a great combination. I feel like a winner already! My dad taught me the true meaning of bravery and resilience. He faced his illness head-on, never backing down and always maintaining a positive outlook. His journey was one of valor and humor, teaching me that even in the face of adversity, we can find moments of levity. His strength in the toughest of times showed me that courage isn’t the absence of fear but the determination to move forward despite it. His lighthearted spirit always lifted our hearts and reminded us to find humor in life’s toughest situations. His ability to bring laughter, joy, and smiles to our lives, even in the most difficult of times, taught me that a positive attitude, cheerful outlook, and good sense of humor can make any challenge more bearable.

My dad’s belief in me was unwavering. That belief has been a driving force in my life, giving me the confidence to face any challenge. His faith in my abilities and constant encouragement have empowered me to pursue my goals, personally and professionally, with determination and self- assurance. Knowing he believed in me has been a source of strength and motivation throughout my entire life. At the August 2021 Snowbasin, Utah “29029” Everest Challenge event, Dad was there in person, cheering me on as he rode the gondola up and down and up and down again, 20 minutes each way, happily coaching me: “Hey, Adam, don’t get tired now,” while wildly waving at me. He even took the microphone from the announcer’s hands, he was so excited and so proud of me, telling the world I did it, I completed the climb, I reached the top! He was like a kid again, filled with so much joy and excitement. I will never ever forget the look on his face, and I will always smile when thinking of it. The “29029” event in Snowbasin was nothing short of miraculous. The day leading up to the hike was filled with thick smoke-filled air from the California wildfires, starting when Dad picked me up at the airport on Thursday, prior to the challenge. He had driven from Sacramento, CA, to Salt Lake City, UT, that day. Then, Friday morning, the air quality magically cleared and was fantastic … and, then, an hour before finishing the last of 13 ascents Saturday afternoon, the weather

turned back to ugly, to winds and hail and tents blowing away everywhere. You had to be there to witness it; it was that unbelievable. And I got to experience all that with Dad. He always told me that being there in person, in Snowbasin, seeing me in my element, was one of the most exhilarating experiences of his life, one of his proudest moments as a dad, my dad! My favorite picture of Dad and me at Snowbasin will be in my shirt pocket this year in Lake Tahoe, close to my heart, where he will always reside with me in everything I do in life, in every passion I pursue, in every challenge I face. And, when I need some cheering on, I will gently touch my shirt pocket, with confidence, knowing that Dad will be guiding me just like he did so many years ago in Snowbasin. “Hey, Adam, don’t get tired now!” I dedicate this year’s 2024 3x3 “29029” TRAIL Tahoe Challenge to my dad, my hero. I love you, Dad. We’ve got this! Together!

TASTY TAKEOUT TRANSFORMATION Your Go-To Guide for Healthy Fast-Food Choices

Are you hungry for some delicious takeout but want to keep it healthy? Whether you’re craving spicy Szechuan or dreaming of a cheesy slice of pizza, we’ve got your back with the ultimate guide to guilt-free takeout! From swapping out egg rolls for lighter spring rolls to skipping your hamburger bun, discover how to indulge in your favorite cuisines without compromising health. So, grab your fork, and let’s dive into the menu of nutritious takeout options that will satisfy your cravings and keep you healthy. Avoid fried foods. Many of the most popular dishes at fast-food restaurants are battered and fried. Look for items on the menu that are baked, steamed, roasted, or grilled, as they are healthier alternatives. Fried foods are high in calories and trans fat, which could negatively impact your health. Simple swaps like choosing a veggie burger instead of a regular burger

with bacon or a baked potato instead of fries can make all the difference. Manage your portion sizes. Many fast food joints serve big portions you can split into two meals, so always watch how much food you order. Avoid supersizing your meal and stick to the smallest serving sizes for sides, drinks, and main entrees. Our favorite takeout hack is to check out the kid’s menu. The children-size hamburgers at most

restaurants typically contain only 250–300 calories, so you will still get a solid serving of protein with less fat — and save a little money. Skip the add-ons. When you crave fast food, every calorie counts. Say no to add-ons or extras for your meal, like bacon or cheese. Sauces and dressings often have extra calories and sugar, so avoiding them or asking for them on the side is best. If you want condiments on your food, like mayonnaise, ask them to add only a light amount or ask for sauce packets so you can control those extra calories. Some healthy and tasty swaps for flavor are avocado, hummus, or salsa. So, remember these tips to keep your meal delicious and healthier next time you’re in the drive-thru line. You can enjoy a world of flavors without sacrificing your well-being by making mindful choices and small swaps.

DISCOVER VIENNA City of Dreams: From Sublime Music to Museums of Death

If you yearn to visit a European city rich in imperial grandeur, music history, and macabre memorials to death, Vienna is for you. And that odd mix of attractions reflects only a small part of the city’s diversity. This former frontier city of the Roman Empire expanded to become the glittering capital of a great empire for centuries. The Habsburg dynasty’s sponsorship of the arts made Vienna a global center of classical music. Home to Beethoven, Vivaldi, Mozart, Mahler, and Strauss, Vienna hosts frequent performances of classics by these and other composers. The city’s museums, churches, and charnel houses offer macabre tributes to death. Piled on the floor and lining the walls of a charnel house beneath St. Stephen’s Cathedral are the skulls and other bones of

11,000 people, according to Atlas Obscura. The Habsburgs created elaborate containers to preserve their embalmed entrails after death. The city’s Crime Museum houses relics of famous murders, including the mummified head of a known killer. Fortunately, the Habsburgs were readers, too. The Austrian National Library, a baroque masterpiece, is home to 2.5 million books. In a Gothic twist, library employees may slip silently in and out of hidden passageways behind the stacks if you watch closely. The city is also noted for its intellectual history. Sigmund Freud lived and worked in Vienna, which led to its nickname, “City of Dreams.” The philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein also worked in Vienna, where he made many contributions to logic in mathematics and language.

On the lighter side, Vienna’s Spanish Riding School offers a unique opportunity to see its famous Lippizaner horses perform dressage. The Imperial Butterfly House is a tropical oasis housing about 400 beautiful insects. Visitors to the “lost garden,” a vast topiary maze at the Habsburgs’ summer palace, can enjoy tales of courtiers frolicking among the web of manicured hedges — not only for playful exploration but also for illicit romance. Taken together, these diverse attractions promise travelers to Vienna a visit to remember!
