HOW VOLLEYBALL SPARKED MY PT PASSION

From a young age, I’ve always been active. Sports are a huge part of my life, and I currently play for the competitive California State University Northridge Men’s Volleyball Club. Like many athletes, I have experienced my fair share of injuries. Nothing got me back on my feet quite like working with a physical therapist. When I got hurt, the care and expertise of my physical therapist helped speed up my recovery and sparked a desire to help others in the same way. I knew I wanted to pursue a career as a physical therapist so I could provide the same healing and support to people in pain that I received.

During my time here, I have learned so much about physical therapy and working with patients. The opportunity to be in this space surrounded by professionals and kind patients has given me so much confidence because of the learning experience they have provided me. It’s nice being able to socialize with patients, and it’s rewarding to see their pain ease up as we chat and go through their exercises. I also love my team. The people at M3 are really fun to work with, and we all have a nice bond. We work together, which is the greatest thing an employee can ask for. My experience here at M3 PT has only cemented my long-term dream of becoming a physical therapist. One day, I think I could see myself owning my own PT business, but at the moment, I’m going to take one step at a time. I want to focus on trying to become a successful physical therapist first.

Now, at M3 PT, I’m on that journey as a physical therapy aide dedicated to helping others overcome their injuries and regain strength. In my role, I do some of everything when assisting our physical therapists. I might help out during a session by preparing patients for electric stimulation treatments, which can decrease pain and swelling, or I could assist with different exercises. If the physical therapist has to step away to help another patient, I step in to support them. My journey to M3 PT ties directly back to my love of sports. When I got serious about my interest in physical therapy, I chatted with one of my CSUN volleyball teammates. At the time, I was searching for volunteer opportunities and internships at various PT clinics, craving hands-on experience in the field. He worked at M3 PT and told me it was a great place to learn and gain skills. I applied to do volunteer

I’m so thankful to M3 PT for the opportunity they have given me. The journey has been incredibly rewarding, from helping patients reclaim their strength to learning from an amazing team. SAY GOODBYE TO OLD CARPET YOUR GUIDE TO A SMOOTH REPLACEMENT PROCESS On average, carpet flooring in your home will last 5–15 years. It could last longer or shorter depending on how often people stand on it, the materials used, and whether a professional installed it. But once you hit the five-year mark, inspect your carpet to see if replacement is in order. If your carpet is flat and compressed or has stains, rips, and other damage throughout, it’s probably time to rip out the old carpet for something new. Removing old carpet is a straightforward task you can complete within a few hours, and then you’ll be ready for the new carpet or flooring installation. To start, remove all furniture, appliances, doors, baseboards, and moldings from the room. You don’t want anything resting on the carpet or in your way. If you plan to throw out your old carpet, you’ll want to cut it into strips using a utility knife. From there, detach the carpet from the tack strip. For this process, it’s best to wear gloves and kneepads to avoid cutting or poking yourself. You can cut the carpet away from the tack strip with your utility knife or use pliers to pull it away from the tack strip and unhook it.

Once the carpet is no longer attached to the tack strip, it’s time to start pulling. While wearing gloves, grab the carpet, pull it, and roll it up. You may need to use pliers to get a better grip. Secure each strip with duct tape to preserve space in your garbage bag. Repeat this process until there is no carpet left in the room. You’ll want to remove the padding underneath the carpet, too. Pry out staples holding the padding using a floor scraper or pliers. If the carpet padding has adhesive, you will need a floor scraper and potentially some commercial adhesive remover to make progress. All that’s left is removing the tack strip, which you can do using a prybar. After removing everything, clean the floor using a broom, vacuum, and mop before you place new flooring or carpet. Just like that, you’ve removed your old carpet and are ready for the next project!

Lower Stress Levels Stress can damage your body and weaken your immune system. When you engage in physical activity, your body releases endorphins, which send happy signals to your

brain and relax you. Regular exercise also increases serotonin and dopamine levels and decreases the stress hormone cortisol. By working with a physical therapist, you can create a regular exercise routine that is safe for you and will improve your overall health. Increased Immunity Physical activity helps to produce and circulate immune cells, which improves the body’s response to illnesses and diseases. During exercise, the immune cells move throughout the body and send white blood cells to areas where bacteria or viruses may be. The effects last up to three hours after your workout, giving your immune system extra time to fight off colds and the flu. Physical therapy can help you get the consistent exercise you need to boost your immunity.

Don’t Let the Holidays Derail Your Physical Therapy Stay Festive, Stay Fit With Halloween, Thanksgiving, and end-of-the-year holidays around the corner, it can be easy to let your physical therapy routine slip by during these busy festivities. Staying on track with your exercises doesn’t have to be another stressor this holiday season. With smart strategies and planning, you can stay on top of your physical therapy while enjoying everything this time of year brings. Here’s how to balance a busy holiday schedule while focusing on your health. Start Early As you prepare for the holidays, you may find it more challenging to stick to your home- based exercise activities or your visits with your physical therapist. Make a plan to start waking up 20 minutes earlier every day to knock out your workout before the day begins. To succeed with your physical therapy plan, you must make time for it, or your progress will stagnate. Alternatively, you can stay up a little later than usual to do your routine before bed. Join Virtually If you will be out of town visiting family during this season or can’t make it into the clinic, go virtual. Many physical therapists offer meetings, sessions, or classes online so you can keep working on your health from home. We offer a four-week online course covering a wide range of body parts. By tuning in digitally, you can save time and also stay on track with your routine from wherever you are.

Write It Down Creating a schedule is one of the best ways to prioritize physical therapy and avoid missing important dates. Plot out your holiday commitments, other items in your day, and your PT sessions. This will ensure your exercise plans are consistent with different duties and engagements. Make sure to include if your clinic will have reduced holiday hours. Creating to-do lists and journaling about your physical therapy is also helpful. As the holiday season unfolds, remember your health is the best gift you can give yourself. With a bit of planning, creativity, and determination, you can enjoy all the joy this season brings without missing a beat on your wellness journey.

TAKE A BREAK

INGREDIENTS

• 2 cups crushed graham crackers • 1/2 cup melted butter • 2 quarts ice cream (any flavor, divided) • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional) • 1/2 cup chocolate or caramel topping (optional)

DIRECTIONS

1. Grease a 9-inch springform pan. 2. Combine graham cracker crumbs and butter; press onto the bottom and up the sides of the pan. 3. Place pan in the freezer for 30 minutes to allow crust to set. 4. Meanwhile, let the ice cream melt just enough to become spreadable. Then spread half of the ice cream into the crust, sprinkle with nuts, then top with the remaining ice cream. 5. Drizzle with topping, if desired. Freeze for 3 hours or until firm. 6. Remove from freezer 15 minutes before serving.

If you yearn to visit a European city rich in imperial grandeur, music history, and macabre memorials to death, Vienna is for you. And that odd mix of attractions reflects only a small part of the city’s diversity. This former frontier city of the Roman Empire expanded to become the glittering capital of a great empire for centuries. The Habsburg dynasty’s sponsorship of the arts made Vienna a global center of classical music. Home to Beethoven, Vivaldi, Mozart, Mahler, and Strauss, Vienna hosts frequent performances of classics by these and other composers. The city’s museums, churches, and charnel houses offer macabre tributes to death. Piled on the floor and lining the walls of a charnel house beneath St. Stephen’s Cathedral are the skulls and other bones of 11,000 people, according to Atlas Obscura. The Habsburgs

created elaborate containers to preserve their embalmed entrails after death. The city’s Crime Museum houses relics of famous murders, including the mummified head of a known killer. Fortunately, the Habsburgs were readers, too. The Austrian National Library, a baroque masterpiece, is home to 2.5 million books. In a Gothic twist, library employees may slip silently in and out of hidden passageways behind the stacks if you watch closely. The city is also noted for its intellectual history. Sigmund Freud lived and worked in Vienna, which led to its nickname, “City of Dreams.” The philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein also worked in Vienna, where he made many contributions to logic in mathematics and language.
