A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEADTEACHER HEADTEACHER’S MESSAGE

Last weekend a group of students went to Gothenburg to take part in a music festival and enjoyed a weekend full of workshops and performances, they even delighted fellow passengers when the crew asked for a quick song on the flight home! Today we welcomed our Year 13 Geography students back from a trip to

Scholastic Book Fair - 30 September - 4 October MacMillan Coffee Morning Friday 4 October Friends of Waldegrave, Year 7 Bingo Night - 4 October, 7-10pm

Barcelona to gather data for their A level coursework. The trip was a great success, although they were all rather tired after a delayed flight meant it was a very late night yesterday. They were not asked to sing! Enjoying less clement weather, our GCSE Art students visited Kew Gardens yesterday for a drawing day, gathering inspiration for their first sketchbook project. Our Year 7 have now all had the opportunity to build closer bonds with their tutor groups through their trips to Thames Young Mariners and on Tuesday, we also welcomed our new Year 7 parents and carers into school for an Information Evening. It was a pleasure to meet so many families and I am looking forward to the Friends of Waldegrave Year 7 Bingo night next Friday 4 October. Please don’t forget to buy tickets via Parent Pay. You will be aware that Richmond Council are committed to improving air quality across the borough and may have noticed that council officers have been visiting schools across the borough at the start and end of school to assess engine idling. Whilst we encourage all students to walk or take public transport, we recognise there are times when car use is unavoidable. Please help to keep our children healthy by turning off your engine whilst waiting.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

As part of our commitment to keeping children safe online, we have arranged some workshops with the Breck Foundation. There will be a live online parent workshop on 18 November from 6-7pm. If you would like to attend, please register here and a Zoom link will be sent to you closer to the event. As we approach Mental Health Awareness month, Mind are recommending we try to incorporate mindfulness into daily life. Here are some tips to get you started: - Notice everyday things like the air moving past you as you move, the feel of a bannister as you go upstairs, or the taste and textures of the food you eat - Pick a regular time, such as your morning commute or evening walk, to be more aware of the sensations caused by the world around you - Try something new, like a different route home from the station or a different seat on the bus. This can help you notice the world in a different way - Watch your thoughts. If you sit quietly for a few moments, you will probably notice thoughts drifting through your mind. Instead of engaging with them, simply observe them and let them go Mind has more simple mindfulness exercises you can try right now.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12

Year 12 students have had another busy week.

On Monday morning, Mr Montgomery, the Head of Politics, Economics and EPQ presented an Assembly to the Year 12 students about the Waldegrave MBA. This is an enterprise programme that interested students can choose to take part in. Participation will involve 2 days in school acquiring business skills and then competing in the Tycoon Competition, where the students will be able to set up and run their own business in teams. Students who took part in this before found it terribly exciting and extremely useful. Year 12 students also took part for the first time in their chosen activity as part of our extensive fortnightly enrichment provision. I am confident they have all got a lot out of it. This was also an opportunity for them to meet and spend time with students from outside of their subject groups, forming new friendships. On Friday 4th of October we have our Macmillan coffee morning cake sale. Macmillan’s Coffee Morning is one of the biggest fundraising events to support people living with cancer. Last year Waldegrave raised £964.18 in support of the charity. Students are encouraged to bake nut free cakes at home and bring these into school next Friday to sell at the coffee morning. They should also bring in some cash if they want to buy cakes on the day and help us raise money for this great cause!

Lastly, Waldegrave is hosting our first ever Wildlife Photography Competition and we would love to see some entries from our Sixth Form students. Please see the advert further in the bulletin for more details.

MR STAVROU, HEAD OF YEAR 12

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘The old man and the sea’- Ernest Hemingway A beautiful tale of a fisherman’s extremely challenging journey through the gulf stream, with a burning desire to catch what he has never been able to previously. The emotive effects of isolation and the physical toll chasing your dreams can take become more and more prevalent throughout. Hemingway masterfully combines carefully crafted and peaceful imagery of the sea with immense mental torment, as well as taking readers on a journey regarding the emptiness we may feel once our goals have been achieved, and perhaps don’t bring the fulfilment we dreamt of, we always wish for more.

Year 10 & 11 Netball vs Christ’s School

LOST, 1 - 17

Our netball teams had their first matches of the year this week, against Christ’s School. All played valiantly, showing great team spirit and a really positive attitude. Our Year 10 & 11s faced a very experienced team in opposition but a fantastic performance from the Year 9 team (pictured below left, with Head of PE, Miss Astridge) enabled our defence to stop Christs from taking shots, while the attack were able to consistently score each of theirs. This week we saw our Year 12/13 Team (pictured below right, with Ms Pipe, PE dept) take part in the Borough Netball Tournament. We had a great win against Orleans Park (4-1), with some fantastic goals scored from long range by the shooters. One of the highlights of the tournament was an exciting game against Richmond Park Academy. Despite losing this match (7-5), there was some great play from both teams and it was neck and neck until the final whistle. The team also narrowly lost matches against Grey court and Lady Eleanor Holles. Well done to all our players.
