A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9

This week we had a fabulous assembly promoting the wildlife photography competition. They can get involved by taking a picture of the wildlife around them (not pets). The entries need to be submitted by the end of October half-term to wildlifephotographer@waldegravesch.org

Congratulations to the following Year 9 students choir students who attended a fabulous trip to Gothenburg over the weekend; Elsie E, Ada K, Judith K, Eden T-M and Bianca Z-D.

I have heard that you were all brilliantly well behaved and had a wonderful time singing in various locations all over the city!

This week I have seen year 9 stepping up in their lessons academically and really embracing the new challenges with excitement and tenacity. With that being said the top Epraise Forms are:

1. 9EMU - 280 2. 9PWA- 253 3. 9SSR- 228

The top three students with Epraise in Year 9 are: Olivia M, Lily MH and Anastasiia M. Keep up the good work!

I also want to congratulate Hannah K in 9FCO who received a “Swan award” for “Best Child Performer in a Female Role” at the Richmond Arts Annual Awards on Saturday night - presented to her by the Mayor of Richmond. Next week we have the exciting MacMillan Coffee Morning on Friday 4th October. Students are encouraged to bake or buy some cakes, which must be nut free, to add to their house’s cake stall. Last year Waldegrave raised £964.18 in support of the charity. It would be wonderful to see some budding bakers in Year 9 show off their skills and support this fantastic cause as well as their respective houses. They should also bring in some cash if they want to buy cakes on the day!

MRS MORTIMER, HEAD OF YEAR 9

BOOK OF THE MONTH

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ - Margaret Atwood This book follows the Handmaid of a wealthy family as she struggles to fight for her rights in a dystopian society where women are used as breeding machines. While those in charge use threats to suppress the desires of the Handmaids, nothing can stop the desire she has to reunite with her daughter who was cruelly taken away as the repressive state was gaining power. Atwood combines fictional aspects with real world issues such as oppression of women and power divide to create a story that will make you simultaneously devastated and filled with motivation to ensure that we continue to fight for what all women everywhere deserve- the right to choose. ~ Isla
